Liese: Cyno01: pissnmoan: A word about Purple Martins. They don't eat many mosquitoes. Bats eat them like M&M's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_MartinThey dont actually. The whole "bats eat 600 mosquitoes an hour!" thing is from a single really flawed study where scientists put a bunch of bats in a room full of nothing but mosquitoes. Examination of the droppings of wild bats shows that they much prefer larger meatier bugs, mosquitoes making up a negligible part of their diet. Adult mosquitoes arent a significant part of any food chains, so if mosquitoes disappeared tomorrow, bats wouldnt go extinct. However their larva are an important part of many aquatic food chains. You're forgetting that regular vs breeding season will cause bats to eat different insects at different parts of the year. Mexican free-tailed bats actually eat quite a bit of mosquitoes, although the numbers on that I don't have. Suffice to say, they will take mosquitoes.http://ucce.ucdavis.edu/files/repositoryfiles/ca5201p8-67722.pdf
Rhino_man: Excess bats aren't a problem... it's all those worthless Robins you have to worry about.
Pontious Pilates: Hats for bats. Keep bats warm.
