(KSAT San Antonio)   A Boy Scout wants to help his community. So he sets up Bat Condos for up to 1,600 bats to sleep and live in hoping they will help reduce the mosquito population. No word what they will use to get rid of the bats once they become a nuisance   (ksat.com) divider line 72

Roscoe, the brown bat that lives in our front yard, approves.

Cute little guy, loves the house I built for him!

Once white-nose syndrome makes it to Texas, you won't have to worry about nuisance bats any longer.

Purple Martins are better.

Plus their houses look like the Jetsons.

Do you have to pay extra for a space to park your Batmobile at a Bat Condo?

Excess bats aren't a problem... it's all those worthless Robins you have to worry about.

Is there a gorilla that likes bat meat? Bring them in and wait for winter and let the gorillas freeze.

Simple.  Just send in the cats to get rid of the bats...

She couldn't be bothered to unzip it.

I don't know why she swallowed the fly.
But she swallowed the spider to catch the fly, and it jiggled and jiggled and jiggled inside her.

We set those up around here. A moron blocked the creek's access to the spring which can result in stranding water from it but the bats take care of that problem better than anything else.

That's true. White-nose syndrome rally did a number on Rick James, those bats don't stand a chance.

I don't think that an overpopulation of bats would be a huge problem.  Bats eat mosquitoes and other flying insects but it's not like they would drive them to extinction, and to be perfectly honest I don't think many people would mind if mosquitoes went extinct anyway.   Besides which bats are awesome. We had a large population by my house when I was a kid, we used to turn the pool light on and watch the bats eat the bugs that congregated over the glowing pool.

Some of my neighbors keep getting bats in their attics.  The buildup of guano is incredible.  Hope the Scout planned for the amount of guano that 1600 bats leave behind.

A bat house has an open bottom, the guano falls to the ground and decomposes.  Furthermore these are multiple houses not one giant house that concentrates it all in one place.

I have similar houses at my house though I only have theoretical room for about 300. I doubt I've ever had that many though; it's actually hard to tell and I'm not going to go through the trouble to get a count.

I will say this though; there are some problems with the houses he built.
The landing pads are too short and don't look rough enough to easily grip.
They probably aren't dark enough to absorb heat; bats like it warm in their summer homes.
The don't appear to be set up for convection ventilation (vent holes).

I don't think he's going to get much of a population going. Here's what mine (and most) look like.

How can you tell if a bat is atheist?  Or gay, for that matter?

I used the 4-chamber design. The BCI newsletter just included a paper on a study about how large bat houses are more successful (among other things that make them successful).
