Welcome to the "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Episode" discussion thread and drinking game!

Season 1, Episode 3
"When Knowledge Conquered Fear"
This episode will focus on how mankind's intelligence created the scientific theory to postulate and predict events on the cosmic scale, highlighting the work of Edmund Halley and Isaac Newton.

Tonight's rules:

Neil says:

Billion(s) - big sip
Billions and billions - finish your drink
Intelligence - sip
Cosmos - sip
Newton - sip

And while I know there are some for which the following request will be impossible to follow, I make it anyway: Let's keep it civil, folks.

So, I know this might seem silly, but I JUST realized this:

During the opening, there is a small tribute to Carl Sagan.  At the beginning of the episode, you see The C and the S of CosmoS on screen, and linger JUST a bit longer than the rest of the letters.

Another small tribute to Sagan??

Don't forget that Creationists are pissed that Cosmos hasn't given a fair shake to their theories.  They're doing that tonight.  A very detailed and thorough analysis of all of the science in creationist theory.  It's supposed to be between the 47th and 48th seconds of tonight's show.  Don't blink.

What's interesting is that the Creation stories are fairly accurate metaphores of The Big Bang and the evolution of the universe and life on Earth. Not bad for bronze age tribesmen.

It replays all over cable, I DVR the Tuesday midnight showing on NatGeo for similar reasons.

Interesting description from the TV guide for tonight's episode:

A comet's path is traced on its long plunge toward the sun. Also: a visit to Isaac Newton's birthplace; and Neil explores the evolutionary development that has lead some humans to think the laws of four-way stop signs don't apply to them, the selfish farkers./em>

Honestly, they were really farking smart. They figured out some insanely complicated and very subtle things, if incompletely. They were simply working from incomplete data, and where they didn't know, they speculated.

I don't get the message 'our ancestors were dumb' from the first half of this episode.

Cable is a massive ripoff, far as I'm concerned. No way in hell am I paying $100+ a month for the 3 channels I'd ever actually watch. Unfortunately, I've never been able to pull in any broadcast signals in this apartment, for some reason. It's not like I live out in the sticks or anything, but some freak of the terrain or something just kills the signal. I've never been too broken up about it, because I've never had anything I wanted to watch on broadcast TV before. The internet usually has whatever I want anyway.

Pariah.: BeerBear: JerseyTim: Our ancestors were dumb.

Pretty much

Honestly, they were really farking smart. They figured out some insanely complicated and very subtle things, if incompletely. They were simply working from incomplete data, and where they didn't know, they speculated.

I don't get the message 'our ancestors were dumb' from the first half of this episode.

consider some of our ancestors killed people to appease a god or ward off a bad omen then yes  they were a bit dumb

What's funny is, I've driven Fort McMurray to Jasper, and I've driven across TC-1, BC to Edmonton and  through Banff... but haven't made the Banff to Jasper trip.

I'm taking holidays in summer - I think I'll go for a drive.

Not so fun fact. Applewhite promised a space ship, hiding behind the comet would take the cult members souls away from earth to a new planet.

One of the Victims of the suicide cult was Nicole Nicholes--Uhura of Star Trek-- brother.

I have no cable, and therefore no Cosmos :(, but wanted to drop in and say Hi y'all.

What's shakin'?

You don't get Fox OTA?

For all those people who repeat the phrase "Over The Air"

Not everyone lives in an area with adequate reception due to distance, hills, living in apartments and not being able to stick a 40 foot antenna on the roof, and other interference factors. Those people use cable or satellite, and if they don't have cable or satellite, they have no live television. They will have to torrent the program later or download it from usenet, where it will be posted by 6 am tomorrow.

My experience was going in May, with camping in Lucerne near Jasper, and Yoho near Banff. I was there the day the sites pretty much opened, and tent camping might be a bit cold (if tents are your thing, it's mine but YMMV). But I had both parks pretty much to myself, which was fantastic.

I take it you had to be pretty well independently wealthy to be a scientist.

How else do you lock yourself away as a hermit and work on equations and formulas and not end up homeless?

How do you take your paychecks in Fish Books and now be evicted from your townhouse?

Yeah, ummm, no.  2 stars is roughing it.  But it's not like there aren't hotels and even lodges where I can stay and day hike.

Ok so my story about washing my hair the day they got the pipes in Yoho Park unfrozen would not comfort you (I had never frozen my entire head before, it was unpleasant). But peace out, travel as you like and have fun getting to your destination!

My husband was on a cross country train some months before the mass suicide, sitting at the same dining table with two guys. Talk got around with the younger guy about the comet that was coming soon, as my husband is an astronomy fan. The old guy was a bit weird and didn't talk much but seemed interested in the talk about the comet. My husband feels guilty about bringing up the subject all the time, he's pretty sure it was Applewhite there over the meatloaf.

That was where I decided I liked astronomy more as a hobby than as a potential career.  Might've been able to stagger through a bachelor's degree, but never would've made it to the PhD.  And a bachelor's degree in astronomy and $5 will get you a cup at Starbuck's.

Pentaxian: I like the subtle references to the idea that Newton has Asperger's.

He was. He was completely asocial and asexual. He died a virgin.

He was the Sheldon Cooper of the 17th century. Insanely brilliant and intelligent, but weird in all sorts of ways.

Sadly, that would probably run afoul of the "no religious test" clause, as it would select against religion.

What's interesting about those guys is how long they lived. Halley and Newton all survived well into their 80s. Christopher Wren died at age 91! And this was in an age where people didn't live past 60. Hooke is the only outlier but mostly due to lifestyle choice.

Those Royal Society dudes were some tough bastards.

I had hoped that combined, Fox and Nat Geo would have done a better job. Does all the CGI cost That much? Was Tysons salary That high? Did Seth want That much to do this? Or did Network Production costs suck up the budget? At least the Original Cosmos had Live background settings for the storytelling. Now we get these crappy Cartoons. I'm just not liking it all that much. This is a real let down for me from what I was expecting. I'll probably watch the rest but I don't see saving them and adding this series to my library. I am Disappointed.

When Pat Robertson is telling people to stop freaking out about this, I'm pretty sure that means the people genuinely outraged are operating from an extremely narrow fringe.  But by all means, attribute their sentiments to a 2 billion people.

And before anyone confuses me for one of them, I think we need to have a show like this run every day.  Preferably in place of cartoons.

I'm more disappointed in the music choices. The original got me very interested in classical music as a kid and I remember spending a long time trying to track down what the guitar piece that they used throughout the show was (Google sure would have been handy in the 80s).

It also seems rather rushed in its presentation whereas the original was slower and gave you time to think. There's less "majesty". But that's what happens when you have only 40 minutes instead of an hour and very frequent commercial breaks.
