Welcome to the "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Episode" discussion thread and drinking game!

Season 1, Episode 3
"When Knowledge Conquered Fear"
This episode will focus on how mankind's intelligence created the scientific theory to postulate and predict events on the cosmic scale, highlighting the work of Edmund Halley and Isaac Newton.

Tonight's rules:

Neil says:

Billion(s) - big sip
Billions and billions - finish your drink
Intelligence - sip
Cosmos - sip
Newton - sip

And while I know there are some for which the following request will be impossible to follow, I make it anyway: Let's keep it civil, folks.

So, I know this might seem silly, but I JUST realized this:

During the opening, there is a small tribute to Carl Sagan.  At the beginning of the episode, you see The C and the S of CosmoS on screen, and linger JUST a bit longer than the rest of the letters.

Another small tribute to Sagan??

They're already feeling slighted because they're not being acknowledged.

Don't you have a Fox over the air channel?

Don't forget that Creationists are pissed that Cosmos hasn't given a fair shake to their theories.  They're doing that tonight.  A very detailed and thorough analysis of all of the science in creationist theory.  It's supposed to be between the 47th and 48th seconds of tonight's show.  Don't blink.

Don't need cable, you can get it with rabbit ears and decent reception.

I've got the last two of my Sam Adams Rebel IPAs ready to go. These are really well-balanced IPAs. Definitely a pushback on the overhopped ones.

What's interesting is that the Creation stories are fairly accurate metaphores of The Big Bang and the evolution of the universe and life on Earth. Not bad for bronze age tribesmen.

It replays all over cable, I DVR the Tuesday midnight showing on NatGeo for similar reasons.

Well, other than the timing and the method, and the origin of life, sure.

Interesting description from the TV guide for tonight's episode:

A comet's path is traced on its long plunge toward the sun. Also: a visit to Isaac Newton's birthplace; and Neil explores the evolutionary development that has lead some humans to think the laws of four-way stop signs don't apply to them, the selfish farkers./em>

To the Gospel Grinders, God-Botherers and Ken the Hammster:

You want "equal time"? Shut the fark up or we'll give you "equal time". We'll go to your churches and appear on your "Christian broadcasts" and show up at the Discovery Institute and Ark Encounter and Creation Museum and teach your children Science and critical thinking.
