She said someone tossed chicken bones over her fence twice this year, and she is worried that her golden retriever, schipperke and cocker spaniel may eat and choke on them.

I would make sure I walked outside naked and shiat in my backyard every day.  And then masturbate furiously. While picking my nose.

I think someone makes laser pointer things you can aim at cameras.  Mount them in your back yard.

Deliberate damage opens you up to a vandalism charge.  A laser pointer doesn't cause damage, though it's also an easy fix for the camera owner - simply move it a couple inches or even just install a notch filter that covers only the laser's frequency.

Can we take post and use to to ask a serious question? If dstanley went into his back yard naked, shiat on the ground, then furiously masturbated whole picking his nose, would the neighbor have any legal bearing to call the cops OE sue him for this? If she catches it on her camera?

No kidding. Get a nice bright laser pointer, put it on a tripod, and just blast the camera. Hook on a beam diffractor (many pointers can come with them to make the dot wider) and i'll catch nothing but a big green splotch.

and when the neighbour being recorded is caught throwing chicken bones over the fence via cctv?

2014-03-24 03:39:01 AM
Wouldn't it be the neighbor's right to build a structure on his side of the fence that blocks the view of the camera? I realize the woman could then just move the camera, but they could build the structure at night and then throw over the chicken bones, and the woman would have no proof.

Also, what crime would you be charged with for throwing chicken bones in your neighbor's yard? Can it ever be justified legally? I know Florida has strange laws, so it might.

Littering or possibly the illegal dumping of garbage.

I'm guessing just littering, possibly dumping depending on how the laws are written. I mean I can't dump 1/2 ton of dead leaves over the fence just because I don't want to deal with it myself. If there was intent to hurt the dogs there might be something on that angle too but it'd be a stretch.

Pretty sure there are multiple ways to win this one. Laser are a great one or some other form of physically blocking it. Personally I'd be more inclined to find out the exact allowable decibel level in noise ordinance and then go a few down from there and play constant low bass directed at my neighbor whenever I was out until the camera decided to come down.

Point a camera in my backyard and there will only be 3 absolutes:
3/4 of the time your camera will record static.
1/4 of the time your camera will record me naked.
4/4 of the time my new better camera will be recording you and your camera being a piece of shiat.

Some lateral thinking is needed here - start throwing chicken bones over from all angles. Day and night. Eventually her dogs will choke to death on them and then there will be no further need to operate the camera.

I like the laser idea also or slingshot some peanut butter at the wires and let the wildlife go to work.

Or you could just shoot the woman and her dogs and burn her house down. In fact, it might be good to kill and burn the entire neighborhood, just in case anybody sees you.

Or just get one of them KFC sadness bowls, and eat it naked, casually lounging in a bean bag.

This guy should just set up a camera or 6 directed at her property viewing whatever he can get away with and stream it to the net 24/7. I'm sure she'd appreciate that.
What if he stored a mirror in his backyard that from her camera's line of sight projected his bedroom or bathroom?

Should work pretty well. And if squirrels don't show up, the birds will poop on the camera.

Destruction of property/vandalism for trying to kill the dogs, plus a lot of municipalities have specific animal cruelty statutes this would violate (death by chicken bone is significantly crueler than just beating a puppy to death with a shovel).  Not a "lock you up for years" crime, but it can put you out a few thousand dollars in automatic awards before you even get around to the fact that the dog owner  will win the inevitable lawsuit.  Probably get a permanent restraining order that'll make your life unpleasant out of the deal too.

Honestly, dogs (especially pedigreed/verified purebreeds, but even a pound pup has a couple thousand dollars of food alone invested in raising it by the time it's grown) are relatively expensive, I'd put a camera up if my neighbor was engaging in this level of douchery too.  You don't fark with people's animals, not so much because they're cute and fluffy as for the same reasons you don't walk over and smash the distributor cap on your neighbor's car.

// Doesn't really matter at this point whether the neighbor puts the camera out of commission somehow, the fact that this dispute is in the public records as having escalated this far means that if the dogs die of anything but old age at this point the neighbor's probably on the hook.  I don't know that the woman was originally meaning to imply that it was the neighbor tossing the bones, but it's damned well implied  now if he's suing to avoid be security-cammed in an open public-area (on a lake with no fence).

They should get a pole of their own with a big piece of wood attached to it.  Put it in front of the camera on your side if the property.  Problem solved.

2014-03-24 06:50:31 AM
Looking at the camera in TFA it strikes me that the best and cheapest solution would be to get a similar height pole and stick a big piece of board/cardboard on it and simply stand it in front of the camera on his side of the fence.  No money needed, easy to move and he can decorate it however he wants.

Agreed.  If Gambino has been chucking chicken bones over the fence then he's a turd and I have no sympathy for him.  However, if he's not and some other idiot who attended a BBQ at his house threw them over the fence, or someone did so from the side of their gardens which are open to the lake etc. etc. then what's he supposed to do?  Live with it?  If I was blameless then I wouldn't put up with it.

From the article, they both sound like vindictive asshats.  But if someone is deliberately throwing chicken bones where the other person's dogs can get them, the dog owner is less of an asshat.  Unless she doesn't clean up her dog's feces, in which case we may have found an equilibrium.

So... this is just another day in a community of grumpy old people who are over entitled and under occupied?  Thank you, Fark for reminding me why I never want to live in Florida.

True, but there are also things the owner can do to ensure that her pets DON'T get hurt from it:

Go outside with them, like the rest of us with unfenced yards have to do ALL THE TIME. I've never had the luxury of a fence, even as a youngster. If we wanted them to stay in the yard, we went outside with them and kept them on-leash until they were appropriately boundary-trained and obedience trained off-leash, which didn't take long at all. You'd be surprised at how many behavior and medical issues that simple supervision can avoid as well. No boundary-fighting, territorial aggression, boredom/nuisance barking, and we were able to monitor exactly if/when any medical issues came up (e.g. diarrhea). At this point in life, having a fenced-in yard and leaving the dog by itself is a foreign concept to me.

Supervision and training also can prevent a dog from eating something it shouldn't. Poison-proofing is nothing new, and quite a few dogs are trained to not take food from other people or pick it up off the ground. A solid OUT command can be a lifesaver in more than one way.  I know, it makes me into a big bad meanie, because food is love or whatever, but if the food has the potential to harm my dog (whether due to allergies, sensitive stomach, pancreatitis, cooked bones, etc) or I just don't want her to have it, tough.

All this doesn't mean I don't want the idiot to get caught, because I'd be out for some justice as well if anyone tried to bait my dog, but not everyone has the ability to use cameras. Lucky her, in some ways. But she also needs to be proactive with her dogs as well and not just leave it to chance that the camera might or might not catch whoever's doing it. I wish her only the best.

Not that I would advocate damaging someone else's property, but here's a potential course of action. Hire someone to come during the night, take down the camera, spray matte clear coat over the lens, and then put it back up. From a distance you wouldn't know that it was there but it would blur any footage it records. So unless the recording is reviewed it will go unnoticed.
