I would imagine that Jimmy Carter probably qualifies as the most boring white man on the planet.  But, hey, the NSA has its orders.

Gotta keep those giant, swimming rabbits away from you, Mr. President!

They probably started monitoring him while Clinton was still President.  Carter took it upon himself to start negoiations in the name of the US without the Clinton's knowledge or approval (North Korea, Haiti, middle east).  At some point he was caught lying to the State Department about his travel plans.

Clinton knew about North Korea, at the very least. I have... a very hard time thinking of him as a "loose cannon," actually.

But yeah, he's an ex-President with diplomatic ties extending beyond his Presidency. Of course he's being monitored.

/It's probably a very boring job

I hate to break it to him, but his letters aren't any more secure than his e-mail.

And this was during WWII.  No doubt they now have something akin to a super-sensitive X-ray that can differentiate between ink/toner/bare paper.

Saw an interesting 60 Minutes segment on Carter a few years ago.  Was interesting to see how he travels domestically most of the time.  He took a regular cab, carried his own suitcase in to the hotel... met up with 2 guys who served as his entourage for some speaking engagement.  Just a regular guy who happens to be a former president.

Here's a clue Pres. Carter, if you're that worried about the govt intercepting your communications, it's probably a bad idea to broadcast your favorite way of communicating!

That may not be correct. The NPS site says he still has it, but I swear I had read that he gave it up. Anyone have any authoritative sources? I can't seem to find any.

I sure hope that Asinine tag is for the NSA. Of course they're monitoring his communications. They're monitoring your communications, and we're not worth shiat.

They're double checking to see if he's giving the president advice on foreign policy and if he, they're going to tell him to stop.

WikiAnswers claims he gave it up, with no citation, but all other actual government sources say he still has it.

Jimmy Carter is so boring that his Secret Service nickname is Jimmy Carter (yes, this is a West Wing reference).

I thought he had, too, but I checked Wikipedia to learn that Nixon was the only president who gave it up.

Well, if you can trust that Wikipedia isn't being edited by the NSA, that is.

Jimmy Carter practically conducts his own (quite successful) foreign policy. I would say there's quite a good chance they specifically monitor his phone calls. I mean, aside from the meta data they collect on EVERYONE.
