Of course it's Africa. Nowhere else on Earth has people this backward. Even the "reporter" writing the article seems to believe that this is a real thing.

If you give a million monkeys a million typewriters and unlimited time, they'll eventually write the coected works of Shakespeare. I guess this is what happens when you give one monkey a single typewriter and an afternoon to slap at it.

The main difference is that we have a functioning civil government. If America's derpier religious cults weren't restrained by the existence of police and child protective services, they'd be beating the demons and sorcery out of people willy nilly, too. Zimbabwe was first colonized as basically slave labor for England, then left to the tender mercies of Robert Mugabe, so they're probably some years away from that. As for the goofy newspaper story, it's no dumber than the birther, truther, astrology, Sasquatch-believing nonsense that's quite popular in the U.S. of A.

Pretty much. Comparable to what we did 300+ years ago and without the courtesy of staging a phony trial beforehand. Not really comparable to what happens here today.

No, over here, we just get moms bashing their kids' brains in with rocks on god's orders, and men killing their girlfriends and dogs on his orders... Much more civilized...

The difference is that those people had mental illnesses, but you knew that.

As for the goofy newspaper story, it's no dumber than the birther, truther, astrology, Sasquatch-believing nonsense that's quite popular in the U.S. of A.

BZZZ! Wrong. You seem to be suggesting that if it wasn't for the police (and for some reason cps) we'd be just as primitive and superstitious as Zimbabwe. This is patently untrue.

The differences between this and birther or truther craziness are... numerous. For starters: it's not mainstream ans no ones being beaten or killed over it.

So that's the summation of Zimbabwe's (Rhodesia) history, huh?  When you are a simple person, you use simple facts for your simple argument.

As stupid as some of the stuff is here in the States, nobody really gets hurt, outside of having their wallets lighten a bit.  Read up on what happens to albino's, in certain parts of Africa, and then, we'll start doing a side-by-side comparison to see who's got the crazier ideas.

Then, JJ chose a poor way of wording that, I think... Because I made no other claim than that those things happen over here, so saying that I was "very wrong" seems out of place... (Not to mention that no one else actually said such a thing to me, as he claimed... I have no issues with what anyone else said to me; just him...)

Yes, there are differences between here and there... No shiat! As pointed out, we've had the benefit of a few hundred years of civilization and prosperity to help move us toward enlightenment and further away from the superstitious violence of our past... But, I was merely pointing out that even we aren't fully free of it yet... So, condemning an entire group of people who haven't exactly had our opportunities to move beyond such nonsense yet, and pretending we're somehow morally superior, while ignoring and/or making excuses for our own local loonies, seems a bit hypocritical...

Many Africans have superstitious beliefs, sure. But consider that many have no benefit of formal education.

This is a failure of their govt.

But American missionary evangelicals are not helping.

They push some pretty bizarre beliefs: speaking in tongues, everything in the bible literally happened. The hatred towards gays pushed by evangelicals is downright shameful.

America hardly holds a moral high ground here.

We just have a bit more rule of law, a functioning govt, and the tax funds to send our children to school.

There should be a push to ban these groups from missionary work. It would be constitutionally difficult, but I believe possible in light of the demonstrated harm done to gay people living in impoverished countries.

zimbomba63: So that's the summation of Zimbabwe's (Rhodesia) history, huh?  When you are a simple person, you use simple facts for your simple argument.

That's what we call a condensation. The reason that superstition and lynch-mob justice are prevalent in Zimbabwe is obviously a lot more complicated than that, but those are the highlights. Take a pre-industrial agrarian society, force it to produce resources for an outside society while getting few benefits of industrialization, add Cold War militarization and a lump of anti-apartheid revolution and see a brutal, corrupt dictator with an anti-Western agenda take over, and you get a lot of what's wrong in Zimbabwe. Prior to the rise of nation-states, EVERY society used beatings by village mobs as a means of resolving disputes, and they believed in witchcraft, too. I'm reading Jared Diamond's "The World Before Yesterday" right now, which delves into that.

I'm no expert on Zimbabwe; the point I'm trying to make is that the goofy belief in mubobobo can be explained by plain old human nature and circumstances, not the "har har Africa is uniquely goofy" racist reasons most of these Farkers seem to believe.

To me, it looks like if you are Christian, you have to believe in witchcraft.  Everything about Christianity is based on some sort of magic.  Right at the beginning, you have the "god created the world in 7 days" thing.  Talking snakes telling Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge.  Noah and the ark.  Jonah and the whale, parting the red sea, etc.

In the New Testament, Jesus was born to a virgin.  We find stories about walking on water, curing illness, raising the dead, the loaves and fishes, water to wine, and at the end of it all, a promise of eternal life.

The list just goes on and on.

To me, it looks like you have to believe in a lot of supernatural stuff to believe in Christianity.

Richard C Stanford: Is it wrong that I saw the headline and immediately thought "Africa"?

I don't know if that is wrong, because I thought the same thing.

Mumbo Jumbo, Superstition, Societal Belief in falsehoods.

Whatcha callit when a racist society believes a non toxic plant is the Devil Weed?

*sigh*

Proves the smart folk got out of Africa millions of years ago, leaving it to rot and waste away by superstitious fools.

Tribesman: Oh hey, those boats must be our ancient gods coming to take us away.  The world is purified once again.
Tribesman 2: It is.  They're white and pure.  Just look at how the sun glows on their faces.
Dutchman: So who wants to come to America?

You know these are apostolic Christians, right?

If you believe in witchcraft you are by definition not Christian. You can pretend to be and lie claiming to be, but you aren't.

Hey look everyone - God is in the thread today!

Oh look, and he's also giving out judgements on witchcraft for free!

zimbomba63: Yeah, I Mobobobobobobobobo'ed the fark out of Kate Upton last night.  I bet she said I'm the best she's ever had.

You don't have to exaggerate the length of your bobos.  Mubobobo is average.  People only think that's small because they watch too many mubobobo videos on the internet of people with freakish proportions.  Most women don't want that much mubobobo and will just think you're a freak.  Too much bobo can hurt!  It's even possible to satisfy a woman with a mubobo if you do it right.

(I'm at least a mubobobobobo, but that's beside the point!)

Can someone point out any country that doesn't have a community of back-assward people that believe stupid stuff?

That said, not all societies have to be perfectly equal.  As noble as it is to stick up for poor Africa against the vile racists, it is entirely possible that the average of one culture is more advanced than another.  A simple example:

Take 10 sets of identical twins, split them into 2 groups so each group has one of the twins, and drop them on identical desert islands.  Let them procreate for 1000 years and then come back and analyze them.  Do you think they'll still be exactly the same?  Probably not.  Perhaps Group A had better leadership in Year 1 and Group B had a nutjob who convinced the rest to worship coconuts.  Group A is now an organized, advanced, civil society and Group B is still wearing loincloths and doing the milk dance.

This doesn't mean that Group B has any less potential than Group A, or that Group B is lazy or stupid.  It's a matter of resources and cultural inheritance.  Everyone builds on what was laid before they arrived.  Also, IQ can be tied to your environment, diet and your cultural inheritance.  So it's also entirely possible that Group A is measurably smarter than Group B, on average.

All that said - those mocking Africa are still a-holes.  But America does have a culture that identifies stupidity and attacks it more aggressively than other countries, leading to slow and gradual improvements.

For certain definitions of stupid, maybe... For other types of stupid, we identify it and then elect it to Congress! Or give it a reality TV show... We worship quite a lot of stupid still, I'm afraid...
