I just love all the Android overcompensation for the former lack of market penetration.  Seriously - you guys can stop trying to make Apple look bad, stop talking about how badly they're doing in relation to Android (especially since they aren't), stop comparing.  Really.  It's OK.  Android has made it.  It's cool.

I have the 920. Works just fine for me. My contract is up at the end of the year so I'll be interested to see whats available. But I have no problems staying with Windows.

I just held a 5C last Saturday while waiting on my Note 3 to get activated. Who the Fark would want that thing? It felt heavier than the Note I was buying, had less of a battery life, and looked liked as cheap as a damn prepaid phone.

As an iPhone 4S user, I'd never buy that POS 5C. Call me whatever you want, but if I'm buying an iPhone I don't want a plastic body.

Butthurt? As much as I'm a Android fan it was Apple who kicked off the smartphone revolution. Heaven knows Nokia and Motorola was producing nothing but crap right before the first iPhone came out. I have reasons that I prefer Android phones but that doesn't mean I don't admire iPhones.

Meh. To get sales up, this phone for 32gb is free with some carriers with upgrade. So, unless they are the prissy iphone fan boy/gal, it an iphone!

I like my android phone, less drama.

According to the Fark Derpbrigade, the LG Prada phone kicked off the smartphone revolution and Apple copied it nearly verbatim and used massive amounts of marketing dollars to con people into thinking the iPhone was different in any way.

As an IT professional I love that so many people buy iPhones. I don't want one myself, but the uniformity across 100+ users makes it much easier to troubleshoot that one guy that always farks his up.

I think the consensus is that Apple did a brilliant job in marketing the iPhone and getting millions of people to want a smartphone. But they didn't "invent" the smartphone, or the form factor. It's the same as Edison didn't invent the light bulb, Bell didn't invent the telephone and so on. They made them popular and got the credit.
No one is denying that the iPhone was a huge hit, but other companies were already bringing out similar machines either before Apple or so soon after that they clearly weren't just copying Apple.

The simple fact is also that for the last few years Apple has trailed in actual features and performance, but their marketing and image has kept people buying them in huge numbers. That lots of people pre-order or queue up on launch day to buy a phone they have never tried proves that they are buying an image, a brand first. I loveed my last two HTCs and they were both far ahead of the then iPhones in specs when I bought them but though I am waiting to see the new One due out next week there is no way I am buying one without having seen it, reading reviews and making sue it is what I want.
Who on earth would buy a new $600 machine blind?

The Razr Maxx HD already has KitKat on Verizon,  I had to go to system updates to get it to check for the update.  Not much difference with 4.4, but I love the phone.  I used to need to plugin my phone by noon and now easily make bedtime with 25% battery left.

I've done app development on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. Heck, long ago I even did some BlackBerry development. Quite frankly they all leave a lot to be desired. Despite what their billions of dollars in emotion based advertising claim, none of the platforms are great. The companies are able to get away with a lot of crap because they can focus customer attention on another platform's flaws and then hand wave their own flaws away. Owners of different phones should be demanding better from the maker of their phone and its OS instead of shilling for it. Amazing how people have allowed their self esteem and identity to be hijacked by some of the largest companies in the world.

I thought the "My phone is better than your phone" penis-waving contests ended a few years ago.  These days pretty much all smartphones do pretty much the same things.  Screen resolution?  Similar.  Processor speed?  Similar.  Memory capacity?  Similar.  WIFI?  Bluetooth?  LTE?  Same, same, same.

/I don't get it.

The reason the enterprise I'm working with now won't support ANY Android devices (employees get phones/tablets from corporate for many job functions) is that you can't tell when (or if) they'll get updated. InfoSec has declared them verboten on any corporate network but Guest. They don't even let them VPN for email, the client checker rejects them. This is Google's flaw in Android: almost no control over the OS updates. This leaves 'regular' users running an OS that's often vulnerable to crazy old bugs.

Blackberry is being phased out, most of the users want a real smartphone (snicker), but Windows phones might make the cut next time.

Personally, I have an iOS phone and tablet. Not really an Apple fan, but I love Foreflight.

So, it outsold some competitors one month on some American carriers, and maybe also for 4Q if you believe some sketchy estimates?

If you're white-knighting the 5C for fanboy purposes then you have already lost.

Pretty much.. .hence why they sell so much.  Apple has done a marvelous job of convincing their users that Android phones are cheap, slow, laggy little lumps that are years behind the iPhone so there is no reason to even look their way.... Buy the next iPhone because Androids suck.

I was on vacation recently, and I was with a family member who buys Apple products exclusively.  I have a Nexus 5 and was doing some random thing with it and he was amazed....  shocked I think... when he saw how good my phone was and all the crap I could do that his mightly iPhone couldn't.

Those benchmarks can suck it....   side by side, my N5 was visibly faster doing pretty much every similar task that we were doing.

Are people really white-knighting Apple and/or Android? Let me guess... You are not a sports fan as the whole 'sports thing' is beyond you. You will, however, vehemently defend a fecking corporate brand like it is your own (all while calling 'sports people a-holes') since it is as close as you can get to being a cool kid.

Just stop. Seriously. Just sit in your $55K (bbbut I get health benefits?!) job and STFU. You sound like a real douche. Let the big kids that actually do things use whatever tool they choose without your self-entitled commentary.

If you can't see that your blind allegience to a brand is nothing but being a shill for a nameless, faceless board of directors, there is no help for you. Just stop. You look really stupid.

I briefly considered getting an iPad mini to play with / run an exclusive app/game or two not available anywhere else.

Then I discovered that iOS doesn't have a proper filesystem. Nope.

With the subsidized handset model, you're leaving money on the table if you don't upgrade periodically.

Upgrading every 2-3 years just makes basic financial sense.  Upgrading every year is for bozos, though.

trialpha: I discovered that iOS doesn't have a proper filesystem. Nope.

HFSX is certainly a filesystem, and the volume organization is pretty standard and Unix-y.

What iOS doesn't have is a user-accessible desktop-style file manager, in the vein of OSX Finder or Windows Explorer.  There are many reasons, some more convincing than others, why Apple chose to do this, but the idea goes back to the early days of the Macintosh and the idea that data files are associated with specific applications and it's rarely necessary to manipulate them outside of the application context.

YMMV.

poot_rootbeer: With the subsidized handset model, you're leaving money on the table if you don't upgrade periodically.

It's not subsidized, it's just rolled into your monthly payments.  Carriers that provide service for unlocked phones, like T-Mobile, are cheaper in the long run if you keep your phone forever.

Fanbois of any stripe annoy me, but Apple fanbois are some of the worst. My brother is one of them. He thinks that the iPhone 5 had the fastest CPU of any phone ever when it came out, and wouldn't listen when I told him that my LTEvo's processor is .2 GHz faster and was released four months before the iPhone 5. He also doesn't want to acknowledge that my phone has a higher-resolution display, insisting that the extra 12 ppi density that his iPhone's screen has makes a noticeable difference. He will also write off certain Android features as useless up until Apple incorporates them into iOS.

I normally don't care about what phones people have. If you have an iPhone and it works for you, great. If you have a WIndows phone and it works for you, great. If you have an Android phone and it works for you, great. If you have a Blackberry and it works for you, you probably don't need a smartphone. I just can't stand the Apple fellating. TFA is a perfect example. Apple is not the second coming of Jesus. Steve Jobs was not a bodhisattva. The iPhone is not the 12th Imam. Steve Jobs was only remarkable for the reality distortion field that surrounded him.

Damn, I was hoping my use of "proper" would've prevented someone from making this comment. Of course it has a filesystem. I meant the below:

poot_rootbeer: What iOS doesn't have is a user-accessible desktop-style file manager, in the vein of OSX Finder or Windows Explorer. Yeah, I've always thought that was idiotic. I also consider it rather dickish on Apple's part, as they're basically stating that all their users are incompetent and cannot be trusted with proper access to the system they own.

2014-03-22 10:45:01 PM

Lsherm: It's not subsidized, it's just rolled into your monthly payments.

Same diff.  After 2 years, my phone bill doesn't go down just because I've finished paying back the money the carrier fronted me to buy my phone.

I use an obscure European brand Linux phone.  You've probably never heard of it.
