I'll bet the "advice" ends with... "and then you offer them milk and cookies."

Isn't "Fark:" reserved for the part that is really messed up? How is it messed up that he is appointing someone directly affected by the issue she is advising on?

Pope Francis named the initial members of a commission to advise him on sex abuse policy Saturday, tapping lay and religious experts

Not exactly the best phrasing.

Francis added: "The Catholic Church is perhaps the only public institution that has moved with transparency and responsibility. No one has done more. And yet the church is the only one that has been attacked."

Ohhh, and you were doing so well up to then.  I think everyone understands that the Catholic Church has not moved with transparency, others have had to drag them kicking and screaming into what they did do, and they are most certainly not the only ones being attacked.  Besides which, this isn't a matter of wearing the wrong color chasuble or even embezzling. YOUR GUYS WERE AND ARE RAPING CHILDREN.

And where are the gay men?  Are they really going to pretend that it's females who are most often abused?  Or is it just that having a homosexual on the panel would negate its findings in the Church because, you know... icky gheys?

I don't think there is anything the Pope could ever do that would satisfy you. I know you have some axe to grind, but it's like you try to be outraged at every turn.

You know, there's a reason I have you favorited as "Terrified Christian white man".

You aren't outraged that the Catholic Church ignored child rapists, then had to be forced to do something about it, and still is dragging is feet and trying to settle and intimidate?  Seriously?  Because that should indeed rile up some righteous anger.

Of perhaps you are outraged that I would expect that a major social group that has been disproportionately vicitimized should be part of the process.  But, you know... icky gheys.

What, exactly, did I say that was unreasonable up there?

And just for the record - I think Francis is a good pope.  But if you are familiar with the Vatican II documents and the pronouncements of the Congregations over the last years, you'll know he's not changing anything, just saying it nicer.

What advice Is needed?   You boot pedophile and rapist clergy out of the church and give all available evidence to the local law enforcement so they can be properly punished by secular authorities in life before receiving eternal damnation in hell.  You don't need a council to tell you how to act, you are the fricken Pope.

With an organization as huge as the Catholic church, I'm assuming the pope can't personally make sure every single abuse allegation turns out that way. Presumably a council would exist to enforce whatever policy they have, and make sure locals don't sweep allegations under the rug.

In the same way that the supreme court can't really personally monitor every single legal case to make sure everything is going as it should.

Or the unexpected/surprising part.

Considering the behavior of past Popes in response to this issue, that's a good sign.  So it's applicable.

In high school, I was part of a Catholic youth leadership group.  Of the 20 odd of us, only one is still hardcore Catholic (and at the time, all of us were more the social justice type anyhow, but we were still technically 'future leadership of the church' and all).

I've been having great fun pulling direct quotes from Francis for her and her friends since the Michigan gay marriage ruling yesterday.  Yeah, he's not for gay marriage - but he tentatively open to the idea of civil unions for reasons of financial security.  And that whole underlying reason for the case, gay couples wanting to jointly adopt children who might not have a loving home otherwise.  That's pretty Jesus-y, and Francis-y.

Good times.

Definitely siding with with Benevolent Misanthrope on this one.
That was pure PR/political talk. Those aren't the words of someone who has seen a grave situation and resolved to change it. It's the words of someone feeling victimized by those mean ol' seculars and their child molestation charges.

It definitely tarnishes my opinion of him, as he it shows he is feeling protective of his clergy instead of his flock. It's still much higher than any other Pope of recent memory, but nobody is perfect I suppose.

What the hell has being gay got to do with being raped? Do you think that being sexually abused makes a man gay? Do you think that sexual abusers of boys target gay boys? Given that one of the hardest things for a male victim of rape to deal with is the presumption that he is gay and the belief that being raped changes his sexuality, you are really not helping here.

It's kind of sad that Sinead still gets animosity considering she was right.  Really, if Pope Francis really wants to troll the hard liners while getting more people to like him, he would appoint Sinead to his council.

The Church has a long way to go, and Francis is light-years ahead of his predecessors. A religious institutuion of that size, entrenched in doctrine, does not about-face in the blink of an eye.

Yes, the abuses are atrocities almost on a scale that would warrant going before The Hague. And unfortunately, unless a number of governments have the stones to bring the hammer down on the Church, a good number of guilty people will not face justice. The Church could and should do more. But they are at least trying to clean out their sewers, which would not happen without the Jesuit in charge.

Except the root causes are off the table.  Forced celibacy of clergy, prohibition on clergy marriage and acknowledgement of resulting children, the subordinate position of women in church, the prohibition on women clergy.  If you remove the perversion of nature in clerical organization, your less inclined to attract elements who use the organization to mask their criminal tastes.   If your not going to attack those elements, then all you can do is attack the resulting criminality by actually acknowledging the problem, cooperating with the authorities, and swiftly removing those using the church as an avenue for criminality and abuse.

You're tiresome, your arguments are weak, and if you're trolling, it's pathetically bad.

There's no reason to believe, based on anything in the history of the Catholic Church, that this Pope will actually address the fundamental problems of the system that has led to the widespread abuse and coverup of that abuse.

His own words condemn this entire farce as a dog and pony show that will satisfy the gullible, but do nothing to address the problem.

But if you are familiar with the Vatican II documents and the pronouncements of the Congregations over the last years, you'll know he's not changing anyt ...

"Terrified Christian white male"? Terrified of what, exactly? You? No. You show up in many threads on religion and you never have anything remotely positive to say, firing off a lot of angry missives. I think you just hate people who don't think like you. Like color coding me and giving me a demeaning description that expressly mentions religion. So, what, exactly am I terrified of? I can assure you people venting impotent rage and righteous indignation behind the anonymity of the internet don't cause me any sleepless nights.

AngryDragon: Daedalus27: AngryDragon: Daedalus27: What advice Is needed?   You boot pedophile and rapist clergy out of the church and give all available evidence to the local law enforcement so they can be properly punished by secular authorities in life before receiving eternal damnation in hell.  You don't need a council to tell you how to act, you are the fricken Pope.

There's always one of you in  Pope thread...

Probably because they will be looking for root causes and making recommendations to eliminate them.  He also appointed a victim of abuse who is ALSO a woman.  That's pretty much attacking the issue as head on as you can get.

They haven't published their guidelines yet.  How can you possibly know any of that?

Because prior history suggests they aren't willing to address those core issues.  The fear of a split in the church between reformers and the traditionalists prevent such necessary discussion. Tell me, do you honestly believe they would consider any of these areas of reform, much less actually adopt them?

Benevolent Misanthrope: doloresonthedottedline: WTFDYW: duffblue: Nabb1: Benevolent Misanthrope: Pope Francis named the initial members of a commission to advise him on sex abuse policy Saturday, tapping lay and religious experts

I have him labeled as a troll but it's sad if he's a serious poster.

Actually, he is not a troll. He's one of the sane people that post on this site. I may not agree with him all the time, but I don't dismiss him as a troll when I don't agree with him.

He's a little ragey.

Children getting raped angers me for some reason.  Covering it up and not doing much to stop it beyond the bare minimum you are dragged into doesn't help.

How do you feel about the public school system? Considering most of the cases are only now coming to light through cell phones or social media, it seems that institution is just as bad as the Catholic Church.

Pedophiles will always gravitate to positions where prey is easier to access. Be happy the church is addressing the issue in such a public way, it might help smoke out the other hiding places.

Are you going to sit here and tell us with a straight face that you think Pope Francis is going to lift the ban on non-celibate clergy, allow female clergy or change the status of women in the church?

Seriously? You're gonna roll with the "but he might do that, you don't know" argument?
