Fixing roads and not shooting people actually would save a city money! Who'd a thunk it?

I would not want to be shot with a .12 gauge bean bag, or hit with a taser. But given a choice, I think I'd take my chances with the taser.

Silly police, if they had used birdshot, he would have been obligated to apologize to them.

Yep. They settle without admitting wrongdoing and then the next time any incident with the officers comes up they can say "this officer has a clan record and has never been found to have committed any wrongdoing or abused police powers".

So the taxpayers lose $1.8 mill, and insurance gets hit for the rest, but the article doesn't say if any police will be held accountable in any way.

FTFA:

Asked about Roche on Friday, Olsen said, "I'm not sure what he was thinking, but I'm sure we all do things we regret."

Roche was the cop who shot him with the beanbag and then threw a flashbang to scatter people coming to his assistance.

I'm not sure I could be that kind, even if I had just won that case.

There's a reason people have been trying to make the phrase "less lethal" stick.
There's very little you can do that which can knock a person to the ground that doesn't also carry the risk of death.

You have no idea how pernicious brain injuries are. People with a brain injury can appear "normal" (whatever that is) to casual acquaintances or even friends.

But the person that was there before the injury is gone. Forever. They're dead, and this new person, no matter what they're like, will never be who you remember.

I wouldn't wish a brain injury on my worst enemy, and even less to have to suffer through seeing what happens to someone you love who has one.

Well pooping on cop cars should be part of any protest.

Never saw any.stabbings or raping in the Occupy protest groups I sat with. Lots of drum circles, free kitchens and music though. No portable toilets though so the cop cars were the only option.

Considering he had a lawyer who was able to secure him a $4.5M settlement I would assume that even if he is not competent he has someone looking out for him who is.

I hate Occupy Oakland.  Hate hate it.  Those idiots broke my windows three times and tried to loot one of my businesses.  They are able bodied kids who could work but choose to panhandle instead while pissing and shatting on the city streets.  With that said, you have got to be a class-A idiot to decide that it's a good idea to shoot one of them in the head.  OPD got better than it deserved and as usual the taxpayer will foot the bill while OPD blames us for their incompetence.

/ why yes, I am bitter.  why do you ask?

My only involvement in Occupy was providing solar panels and handbuilt phone chargers. I also provided sort of medical evacuation to two people once. (SFO/Oakland).

First half of why I stopped caring: Everyone wanted the chargers, nobody wanted to learn how to make them (I did make a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVUbIMncjqM )

Second half of why I stopped caring: While I was picking up people who needed a shower, some TLC and a night of actual bed rest (in my bed), some jackass keyed my car, I suppose because it looked too nice.

So yeah, fark Occupy. The Rolling Jubilee is a great idea though ( http://rollingjubilee.org/  ).

I personally think he should have taken it to trial. The cops threw flash bang grenades and then started shooting bean bags, the cop who shot him was closer than 20 feet. When people were trying to help him a cop threw a tear gas canister to disperse them, then they just kinda let him lay there. Completely farked situation. Just another reason I try my hardest to stay away from Oakland.

In his words the whole ordeal was too stressful. I understand, and hope that he can live out his life with what he has.

I do know 3 people who have survived terrible brain injuries and have to say, they are not the people they once were. Each one displays total inability to comprehend that what they may be thinking or doing can in any way be inappropriate. Kinda weird but mostly sad.

2014-03-22 11:16:13 PM
If it's a beanbag that's filled with lead shot pellets instead of beans, then it's not a beanbag. It's a small sack of lead shrapnel launched at high velocity.

2014-03-22 11:31:35 PM

LMAO - I came to type this.

This POS shouldn't get a dollar.  He was involved in a riot, the police told them to disperse and the police used non-lethal force to cause them to disperse.  Oh you got hit in the head while you were dancing around in the middle of vandalism and other malcontents throwing shiat at the police?  That sucks.  Next time try not to behave like an animal.

The only settlement he should have taken would be to have the offending jackofficer and every one in the chain of command above him loaded into a giant hamster ball filled with skunks, tear gas, porcupines, flash bang grenades, explosive 'non lethal' lead filled 'bean bags', and copious amounts of raw sewage. Then roll said hamster ball up & down the hills of San Francisco until they all sustained similar non-lethal head injuries.

It's because they finally got called out for Tasering every third person who looked at a cop crosseyed... "Non lethal" turned out to be a total lie, so they had to come up with something. The term is fine, my problem is with the attitude that goes along with it. People think since it isn't "lethal", then they can shoot anybody they farking want to... I really can't decide how much of that is intentional, and how much is just a psychological thing they aren't even aware of.
