I'm conflicted.  I hate the Dodgers, but I have four of them on my fantasy team, including Kershaw.

Cricket is fun, but its action seems to be more similar to a combination of basketball (lots of scoring) and football (occasional big plays) than baseball, which is more like hockey or soccer, where scoring plays are much more precious.  That's something I love about the game.  Excitement and tension build up during the breaks in the action, especially when you imagine how stressful the important moments are for the pitcher, who can be perfect all afternoon and then blow it all on one pitch.

The pitcher wins most of the time, but it's the times he loses that decide the game.  I can enjoy that even in a game played between teams I don't care about at all.

This just proves that even MLB thinks Spring training lasts too long.

Start the season already!

I stayed up past 3AM to listen to Vinny marvel at the beauty of the Members and Ladies stands. Once Van Slyke hit that shot, I knew Kershaw wasn't going to lose, so I passed out.

Forgot to add, the crowd were very impressed by foul balls into the stands. It was pretty funny.

Having watched all three types of cricket I can attest that it's mostly like elementary school t-ball.

Lots of ground balls

The fielding is terrible and catching a fly is a big deal

It feels like it takes all day even when it's a short game

No slides or steals

Opening day is always going to be during the NCAA tournament (I'm assuming that's what you meant).  There's nothing that can be done about that.  And this is hardly any worse than the NFL having games in London.

Considering that Australia has their own baseball league, there's a couple of successful Aussies in the Majors (Grant Balfour comes immediately to mind) and there was around 37k in the stadium for game 1 and they're expecting more for game 2 later today (our time); I'd say you do not know what you're talking about.

Yeah, I guess you're right.  The commisioner and owners can't alter the schedule of their sport.  And the NFL's opening games are in prime time on a weekday night, usuallly at one of the previous year's Super Bowl team's home stadium.

Other than that, it's identical.

Well, yeah, you're not allowed to keep them in cricket - normal wear and tear on the ball affects the bowling team's tactics.

Then what was the point of starting the season in Japan a few years ago? Baseball is already a big deal there.

Why not at least have some regular season games south of the border? With all the Latino players in the game it's the least baseball could do. There's no time-zone issues, and it would be a hell of a lot more interesting than a bunch of Mariners-Pirates and Jays-Brewers interleague games absolutely nobody gives a shiat about.

Opening day overseas is a desperate gimmick.

I think most of the stadiums in Latin America are about the equivalent of AA stadiums in size (and probably lower quality). Plus right now, Venezuela and Mexico aren't exactly safe places to travel. That stadium the Yanks and Marlins played at in Panama last weekend was amongst one of the nicest and biggest places in Latin America. Most of the stadiums are quite a bit smaller.

That's what I was thinking. Why isn't this came in Brazil or Peru? Aren't most MLB players from Central or South America?

Probably, but MLB was playing games in Tiger Stadium not  that long ago and that place had the nastiest men's rooms this side of Calcutta or at least CBGB.

But he's right though. Baseball season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds SAY it starts. Because that's the way it's supposed to be.

He's got a ton of talent, but his tendency to gamble will hurt him until he matures. If the LA spotlight doesn't get to him first.

To quote Joe Posnanski:

And, no, when you cut through the nonsense, it doesn't matter that the first game is at night or that the Astros are in the American League now or that weird matchups like Reds-Angels will pepper the schedule for six months. So what? Baseball's back.

My biggest complaint about the Dodgers-D'Backs in Australia?  The Dodgers are only on Time Warner as of now and the unless you have Time Warner, it is blacked out everywhere else in LA.  Tonight's game started at 7pm LA Time and my kids were showered and in bed shortly after.  It would have been nice to watch the Dodgers this evening.

I can see Dodgers or D'Backs fans complaining about the games, because both teams had spring training cut short, the jet lag is supposed to be awful, and the D'Backs lost 2 home dates (not that it totally matters since they were 22nd in attendance last year).  Or that Opening Day started at 1am local time (if you were lucky enough to be able to watch it).  That kind of stuff stinks for the local fans.

I just don't know why fans of other teams give a crap.  By all accounts (even some of the cynical guys I read), the whole thing has been fairly successful.  I told this story on another site (baseballthinkfactory.org), but I think it's worth repeating here.  My kids are immersed in baseball.  During baseball season (much to my wife's dismay) I try to watch as much as possible.  They play baseball.  I watch MLB Network during the offseason for my background noise.  Heck, I even watched Arizona Fall League games last year on MLBN after the season.  But, it wasn't until I brought my boys to a game last season* (almost 5 and 3 at the time) that they really kind of started enjoying the game.  They can't wait to go back to "The Dodger Stadium" as my youngest son calls it.

If playing games in Australia can do that same sort of thing for future fans, so be it.  If it produces even more future Major League talent, even better.  Baseball can only get better when there are more places to find players.

The funny thing about the Cincinnati opening day is that the honor could go to the Braves just as well as the Reds.  The Braves are the actual descendants of the Red Legs that played in Cincinnati, "moved" to Boston and eventually became the Boston Braves.

Coincidentally, I've been campaigning for almost twenty years for an annual "Kick Bud Selig Square in the Ass" day. Ticket sales would go through the roof! But noooo, Bud is selfish and only thinks of himself.

All four are corp-whores, but I hold a special place in my heart for Bud Selig because he took an office that was intended to be the Grand Custodian and Caretaker of fairness in Organized Baseball, and subverted and perverted it into a humbug position as Leader of the Owners.

I'm not a vindictive man (well, maybe a little), so I won't damn him to Hell, but if God so decides, I can't argue with his decision.

And now you know how every Eastern time zone fan feels for 130 games a year or so.

When I am emperor there will be at least one day game on the schedule every day of the season, and there will be no scheduling idiocy like night games on Memorial Day and Labor Day, or having the Yankees playing in Toronto on July 4 (or the Jays and Expos* playing out of town on Canada Day, for that matter).

* when I am emperor there will be a team in Montreal, as God and Coco Laboy intended
