Arachnophobe: How do you have a poker tournament at a Furry convention?

You know the costumes come off, right?

Long story, but I ended up at a furry con.  90% of the people did not have costumes.

The worst is when furries are also heroin addicts. I hate a furry with the syringe on top.

Wow. Fark is going easy on us.

I'm scared o.o

What did we do? Were sorry!

Went hunting for a link to the full story of Tumbles the Stairdragon to post, but alas all the links are 404's.

CSB: Went on a date with a girl who turned out to be a furry once.  She showed up in cat-ears for drinks, and I thought it a bit weird.  Didn't find out until we got back to her place that she had left the rest of the getup at home.

/Last I hear she hooked up with a horse fursona

Oh, look.  A thread hating on furries.  Is it 2007 again?

Not a lot of that here. What's you reason for reading it into the thread? Hoping you could whip up the persecution complex?

Just one of the consequences of an increasingly impersonal world that is regressing back to manorialism.
Fantasy movies and TV shows have been flourishing as people seek to escape their reality, if only for a moment.

ShatteredMinds: jimmy-kray: people are farking weird.

^ This is my favorite part about people. Too bad most of us are less that accepting of all the strange and intricate eccentricities of the human condition.

you can be accepting and appreciative of the strange and intricate eccentricities of the human condition while still being weirded out by it. like, yeah, i can grasp the underlying psychological issues driving this sort of behaviour. i understand that social exclusion can and does lead people to seek human connection and find acceptance in some pretty unconventional ways. all sorts of weird little subcultures get born that way. i still find it hilarious and bizarre.

Capo Del Bandito: jimmy-kray: people are farking weird.

But if they keep the costumes on, it's just weird farking.

ha!

spot on. there's a real internet trend of people generating ways in which they can make themselves out to be victims of some sort of oppression in order to give their lives some sense of meaning.

understandable in an impersonal modern world where we have so much convenience of technology, etc., and don't really have to struggle, but really sad when you think of how all that passion could be better put to use.

like in the case of furries... if they love animals so much, how awesome would it be if, instead of spending all that time and energy and money into gratifying themselves this way, they volunteered at their local shelter, or raised funds for wildlife charities, or protested bear-baiting, or just did pretty much anything that would actually make a difference to improving the welfare of the animals they claim to identify with so strongly?

They do.  Just about every furry con sponsors a charity.  Anthrocon raised $31,255 for a Horse Rescue last year.

Many furries also do volunteer at animal rescues, perform at hospitals, organize smaller charity events for animals and even sick/dying children. Some become involved in saving people as well, I know of many furries who are also first responders.

:) Yeah its weird. We know it is, we just stopped caring that anyone else thought it was weird and decided to do our own thing ^^

Lots of them do.

They also work in IT frequently, and keep Drew's website running.

Never understood the hate for furries. They seem to be a fairly innocuous lot, unlike, say, the excessively religious.

It's certainly not my cup of tea, but I don't understand all the ignorant hate over Furries.  Nobody's forcing you to dress up in an animal themed costume (unless you're a paid mascot for some lame sports team or similar situation).  Unless the overwhelming majority of Furries have done something awful to you, like maybe they all raped your mom causing her to bear you as an illegitimate Freddy Krueger child, then you're a farking inexcusable piece of shiat for spewing hatred towards things you don't necessarily understand and that have no significant negative effect on your life and happiness.

There's only so many jokes you can make about furries before you hit the walls of "methinks thou dost protest too much" or "man, what's your dickish obsession with the furries?"

I hit that limit a while ago.

So instead I just find out about the acquaintance who was headed out to Atlanta this weekend for a very non-specific, "thing" he and his friends were doing.

Went to 'Furneal Equinox 2014' with my daughter here in Toronto, as chaperone.  It is mostly cos-players and mascots and people having wacky fun, improv comedy and mostly making hotel staff smile as they spread random silliness around.

Of course, like any human hobby, the extreme weird fringe gets the press and the silently majority of normal folks having fun is ignored.
