So, my wife and I last year got our WDW annual passes renewed and we took her family with us.  They told us that joke (as if we've never heard it before).  When we got to the ticket booth, the cast member ask her which ticket she wanted.  She picked Minnie Mouse.  When it was my turn, the cast member figured I wanted Mickey.  I said no, I wanted Goofy.  The family member that told us that joke couldn't understand.  She said, get the Mickey one it would be so cute for you to have Mickey and Minnie passes.  I blankly stared at her and said, "remember that joke you just told us?"

Yes we may pity her, however looking at a different angle, that was the choice she had made 40 years ago. The son never asked to be born by the way.

I bet that's probably the only thing he didn't ask for.

You buy things that appreciate, you lease things that depreciate. It would be more economical for her to lease a wife for him, and he can trade in the wife on a new one when her lease expires. Or if he only needs a wife occasionally, he would be money ahead just renting one.

Given that China has a huge surplus of males because all the female babies end up in dumpsters, this is probably fairly common.

This. That's the first thing I thought of when I read the headline. It's a sad byproduct of the One Child policy and a culture that values male children over females. You have millions of Chinese men that will likely never get married or even have any kind of relationship, and Chinese women are a high value commodity and can pick and choose the best suitors (Read: men with lots of $$$).

To me it seems like a ticking time bomb to have such a high amount of males with no future.

I've been to China twice (not counting Hong Kong).

The attitude of some of the ladies there is appalling.

They KNOW they are becoming more and more a rare commodity and act accordingly.*

If you thought dating is difficult wherever you are, imagine what it's like there.

Hearing comments like "Show me the money to get the honey" are not uncommon.

The even more unfortunate thing is that like other 'developing' countries the age of marriage is increasing.
So you have a huge aging population, 20-50 million more males than females (depending which report), and the age of marriage increasing so less chance of kids.

The country is heading for a train wreck of a population imbalance.

If you thought the social security structure is stretched in the US...

The other thing is that they could start importing women from other even more impoverished areas- if they weren't so disdainful of foreigners and the idea of having children with them. There's nothing to stop Chinese men from romancing similarly salaried and educated foreign women either, if they got over the idea of 'western women are whores and would make bad wives' and were willing to do housework and make some compromises etc, so it kind of cuts both ways. On the one hand, you have girls who were raised having the 'I'm a special princess with super valuable girl parts' who think men should have to compete and pay out to get her attention, but on the other hand, you have a generation of spoiled 'Little Emperors' who were raised as doted on only children, who expect to be catered to and are apparently much harder to get along with as spouses than the older generation of Chinese men.

It's really going to be a special generation for romance.

Yeah.  What we are seeing is the result of the one-child policy combined with the strong cultural preference for sons--if they can have only one they do their best to ensure it's a son.  The result is not enough women to go around--if you're low on the desirability ladder your chances of ever finding one are remote.

And yet many Chinese women seem to favor the idea of marrying an American man.  I'm married to a Chinese and when we are over there there's a common conversation:  Young (and occasionally not so young) Chinese woman notes that we are a couple, she asks my wife if I understand Chinese (a few words only), then they ask her how she likes being married to an American.  When they find out she's happy they ask how they can get one of their own.  Requests for matchmaking are very common.

As the economy has improved over there this doesn't play out as often.

I think there's a kind of formula that plays out in women's heads....how well he'll treat me + how much shiat my family will give me for marrying a foreigner x how much more money he's got than anyone else I can marry here which will help mollify my family = whether or not it's a good idea.

My wife's family actually encouraged her to marry me as they recognized that moving here would better her life.  That was back in the 80s when things were nowhere near as good over there as they are now, though.

The cost to her was not in parental disapproval, but isolation from family (at the time there simply was no way to call, all communication was by letter) and the life she had known.  It was several years after our marriage before I even met her parents and even more until I met the rest of her family.

These days the situation has flipped--talking is cheaper than letters and half of them she can Skype for free.

Yeah. Wow.

The weird thing is that it isn't a small country to take such drastic measures as the one child policy.

This is what happens when you don't come from a place of abundance and the policies implemented by communists (who love to control everything) who were just coming off the revolution. And were suffering for it.
