Bridges, who has helped raise awareness and money for several food-based charities in Montana, said, "Last year only 30% of the kids were participating in the "Breakfast After The Bell" program. Now it's 76%. My gosh, what a great example for the rest of the countryIf only Larry had access to school breakfasts, there might've been no need to find strangers in the alps.

Well yeah... I just don't get what's so hard about feeding your own kid before you take them to school? Christ, does the school have to do everything for you people? Is the school going to lovingly craft mickey mouse pancakes for your kids?

You write as if he's the son of someone famous.
It's not an easy fix. You see results run the gamut. Here in NM, you don't know if some kids eat; in Texas, I've seen how cafeterias deliver meals to high school kids at their desks.

Money. Time (especially if parent/s work). Getting the dang kids out of bed in the morning. Etc.My mom only worked part time when I was in school and I remember non bowl of cereal breakfasts only on the weekends or before the big state test/any big project/science fair each year. If I didn't make myself a bowl of cereal, well...

I suppose to be fair they have to feed just anyone that shows up.

That Guy Jeff: Well yeah... I just don't get what's so hard about feeding your own kid before you take them to school? Christ, does the school have to do everything for you people?

While my wife and I have schedules that allow us to actually make our kids breakfast, lunch, and dinners; that isn't the case for every family out there. Some kids simply have to get themselves ready for school in the morning, walk out to the bus, and head off for school. Is the kid going to make a good quality breakfast for his/herself? Maybe... probably not though.

I think maybe you're directing your ire in the wrong direction. Do you think it's the parent's fault that they have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet and that they get to spend only a little time with their kids or is it something else? Could it be that companies don't adequately pay their employees and as a result those employees have to make hard choices like such as, "Roof over my kid's head and heat to keep him/her warm or extra time in the morning to cook my kid a well balanced breakfast?"

All I'm saying is that you're getting all bent out of shape at parents because other folks are stepping in to help out and improve the lives of kids in small ways like making sure they have a good breakfast to start their day. Maybe you could just commend the people who are helping and stop trying to take a swing at parents who are apparently having a rough time of it in today's economy/society as it stands.

Or maybe it just makes you feel superior to take the piss out of people who are already having a rough go of it? Easy targets and all that.

If you don't have time to take care of children, don't have them. Children are a choice and a big responsibility. Just like don't get a dog just to make your dad take care of it, don't get a kid just to make Papa Government feed it for you. It's commendable that people are willing to step in to help out with some people's farkups. What's not commendable the people who are creating the problems to begin with.

Oh gosh, you're right!

First, studies of poor households show that almost half own their own homes, three quarters own a car, and almost all have a color television.

A car? A color television!  By gods, these people must be eating caviar and foie gras from diamond-encrusted gold and platinum plates, to live such opulent lifestyles.

Yes, many of the "poor" "own" their own homes because they inherited the home they were raised in from their parents, because they come from families that were never wealthy enough to live life via credit, and haven't morgage hopped their way into a McMansion.

The American poor seem to have money for things other than food for their children, if the one-in-five statistic is to be believed.

Because of course, as we all know, you need to re-buy your TV every week like you do your groceries, and if it's in color- not only is that an unneccessary extravagance, but certainly these "poor" bought these TVs instead of feeding their children, as color TVs didn't even exist 6 months ago.

Yeah, right. 76% of the kids in this school district in Montana had their jobs outsourced to Malaysia. You know, I wasn't even thinking about economics when I said people who rely on the school to give their kids breakfast are shiatty parents. I was picturing the parents reading their iphones or having to get out in time for the Frappe-latte whatever the hell starbucks sells. But as long as you brought it up, I will say: I don't care why you're (rhetorical you) a shiatty parent, and neither does your kid.

Yeah lazy bums with 3-4 kids, night jobs, or holding down 2 fulltime, or maybe 3 part-times, should just suck it up and get up early and provide a scratch breakfast.  Or hand the kids PopTarts and soda during the commute to school like Real Americans.
