austerity101: BMFPitt: Microaggression? Really, Canada? Even The Onion couldn't have come up with that.

Flappyhead: feckingmorons: Microagression is politically correct nonsense only found on college campuses.

Done in one.  A bunch of special snowflakes got their hackles up over nothing, end of story.

I get the impression that the people disparaging the notion of microaggressions are white, heterosexual, non-trans males, since microaggressions are most definitely a thing, and they've been studied for 40 years.  Talk to a gay person, a trans person, or a person of color some time, and you might learn what a microaggression is.

Examples:

- "Wow, you're really articulate" ... for a mush-mouthed colored boy
- "Which one of you is the girl and which one is the guy?" ... because your relationship has to fit inside the same gender roles as mine
- "So what are you?" ... because it's totally OK to ask someone this question about their race or gender

/but yes, this case is stupid.
//that doesn't make the concept of microaggressions stupid.

Yeah, those white, cis-gendered, hetero males sure do police their hegemonic norms. No one else does that kind of thing.

So, no pictures of Cassius Clay or Sugar Ray Leonard either?

Not unless you're willing to admit your racist nature!

/ and don't even THINK of using a picture of Mohammad Ali

// not serious

Ever notice that you never see Mohammad Ali and Cassius Clay in the same picture together?  Kind of makes you wonder what sort of funny stuff is going on there.

Besides the one where Mohammad Ali is standing over Cassius Clay in the ring? Or am I thinking of a different picture?

/ in tribute to Mohammad Ali; I often say the phrase, "float like a butterfly and sting like when I pee"

Whoosh! I done goofed! Mohammad Ali is Cassius Clay. And, I was thinking of Mohammad Ali's bout with Sonny Liston.

Oh. I thought you were making some deep introspective sociorelugious point about how his later Muslim identity had defeated his earlier Christian identity...

I thought you were making a joke about the stereotype that black people all look the same...

/enough interpretations for everyone!

You sound white, cisgendered, straight, and male.

They need to turn their vaginas in to the RCMP and get on with their lives.

Why do the blacks not appreciate that there are some good quality white folks offend on their behalf?

That gif was an attempt to show how 'cool' he was, especially in comparison to his clueless predecessor, who had a gif of him endlessly attempting to open a door in a similar situation. Part of Obama's appeal to younger voters and women is how 'cool' he is portrayed to be by the media because of how young (which is, of course, disgusting age discrimination) and how black he is. I just saw a study that showed that part of the problem black kids have in white schools is that the white kids stereotype them as being cooler than they are as a product* of what they presume to be a rougher life and immediately flock to them for street knowledge, immediately abandoning them and leaving them without friends if they fail to conform to the stereotype.

Therefore, the media's portrayal of Obama as a cool President is helping add to the stereotyping and dehumanizing idolization of young black boys in suburban schools, placing undue pressure on them, and must be stopped now. The best way to solve this is to instead show how he is just the same as his crusty older white male predecessors but, of course, that would be nothing more than a sickening way of sweeping historical oppression under the rug and it would unfairly pigeonhole Obama's accomplishments

So, as you can see, we're faced with a conundrum. Perhaps the best solution is simply to abolish the office of President altogether, as it's elevation and endowment of one human being, who must invariably have subscribe to a gender, a sexuality, a race, a name, an age, a preference between dogs or cats, an educational system that fails society's 'others', a magazine that doesn't equally devote time to every single person on Earth's hobbies, a language, a mobile operating system, and the blatantly ableist fetishization of "good" mental health that is inexplicably demanded of our political leaders ALL contributes to the various forms of capitalist oppression and political disenfranchisement that afflict the unquestionably infallible people of our world. But, as a cisabled hetero cissexual cisethnic white cisgendered non-transcis male from a cismiddleclasscisAmericanbackground, my inherently privileged view of the world invariably skews my thoughts towards oppression, so there's a good chance I'm wrong.

*: This word, which implies that black boys are a commodity, is dehumanizing. I greatly apologize for my disgusting remarks and will immediately check my privilege while lamenting that society has not yet deemed it necessary to put me through a period of rehabilitative incarceration where I can be reeducated and abandon my apparently colonialist attitudes

I know it's been explained before, but complaining about Obama's politics isn't racist. Some of the complaints are poorly thought out and are highly partisan, but that stuff happens to every president.

When folks pull the birth certificate crap, biatch about lettuce and mustard, pink sweaters for his daughters, hip hop barbeques, and his Muslim Sharia law then folks have to wonder where those complaints are coming from.

But you teabaggers already knew that.

Maybe when Canada (and the US) aren't overwhelmingly white-bread North America these kinds of incidents won't be as common. Trying to dismiss it as liberal PC bullshiat only makes you seem more ignorant.

Snark aside, it's obvious there is still a race problem and an Anglo-Saxon dominated court system.

Deal with it.

Cuz only black people can kick down doors now or something? Relax, everyone knows it's all fake, that little spindly runt of a man can't even push a garbage hopper 10 feet, much less kick down a door.

Imagine my surprise though at seeing a headline with Obama and apology in it that didn't make me outright ashamed to live under this administration.

As someone who's openly gay, I know what you're talking about. I've never had someone been so stupid as to make a remark about top/bottom, but I've had people (for example) inquire if my marriage was "just for tax reasons?" and was told by one person upon the news of our wedding "Enjoy wearing your pretty dress." (we're both men and neither one of us wears a dress, something the person making the comment knew full well).

I still think "microagression" is a stupid word to describe this sort of thing, though. Seems like the concepts of "rudeness" and "insensitivity" covers it fairly well.

/if I'm a white man, but an openly gay white man, do I still have to check my privilege?

Pretty much everyone should, particularly the people who use the phrase most often.

Welcome. I guess.

Why the fark would you call me that? To keep up your record of being 100% wrong in all things?

Seriously, guy, besides the absolute inaccuracy, that's a very offensive personal attack on me.

Your privilege is you think you're some kind of special arbiter in all things political, moral, and racial, when you're really just a loser neckbeard douche who doesn't know 1% of what he thinks he does.

Keep your beer, welcome to ignore. Seriously.
