According to Wikipedia, the term Microaggression was invented in 1970, so it's not a new thing, just obscure. I notice that Firefox considers "Microaggression" to be a misspelled word, which might in itself be a microaggression.

When I was doing my undergrad at McGill a few years ago the student government decided to hold a referendum on whether or not the school should formally admonish Israel for their invasion of Lebanon. Normally nobody ever attends any political functions at McGill but there are sizable Jewish and Muslim populations that go there, so this particular vote got out of hand real fast. There were so many people that the vote-counters couldn't keep track of them all, so somebody had the brilliant idea to ask all people who were pro-Israel to stand at one of the gymnasium and all the anti-Israel people to stand on the other side. It never exploded past a lot of yelling and name-calling across the gym, but I'm pretty sure it was the closest I've ever come to being in a race war.
There are a lot of similar incidents that happened during my time there, but the moral of the story is that the McGill student government has a history of being as PC as possible, while being contextually oblivious.

Also according to Wikipedia, only non-white people seem capable of being victims of it.  The entry only mentions survey results of ethnic minorities.

The idea of a "microaggression" being a punishable offense is just as ridiculous as the notion that white people can't be the victims of racism.  Both mentalities need to go.

Nice Goodwin of the thread but the problem with laws against hate speech and even hate crime laws (which can be different) is who gets to define hate speech? Can you have free speech if you have laws against speech that offends some people? You cannot claim to have free speech and at the same time have laws against speech that might offend some people-they cannot coexist. There is no right to not be offended otherwise most rappers should be in jail.

People are entitled to their stupidity and only when they act on that stupidity in manner that causes real harm to others should the law intervene but we should not punish mere thought, we are not Euro-trash.

I am offended by both flag burning and cross burning but I don't think either should be against the law. Again people are entitled to their stupidity

Similarly Hate laws are wrong. Under the concept of equal protection under the law how can you have special protected classes (by race, gender, religion or sexual orientation) where crimes against them are subjected to enhance prosecution efforts and punishments and claim to have equal protection under the law. This is not equal protection but special protection and is wrong and really amounts to nothing more than political pandering.

I acknowledge the need for enhanced penalties for crimes against those less able to defend themselves (children, elderly and the physically/mentally handicapped) but for the rest of us we should all have the same laws applied.

wiredmaverick: When I was doing my undergrad at McGill a few years ago the student government decided to hold a referendum on whether or not the school should formally admonish Israel for their invasion of Lebanon.

I get the impression that the people disparaging the notion of microaggressions are white, heterosexual, non-trans males, since microaggressions are most definitely a thing, and they've been studied for 40 years.  Talk to a gay person, a trans person, or a person of color some time, and you might learn what a microaggression is.

Examples:

- "Wow, you're really articulate" ... for a mush-mouthed colored boy
- "Which one of you is the girl and which one is the guy?" ... because your relationship has to fit inside the same gender roles as mine
- "So what are you?" ... because it's totally OK to ask someone this question about their race or gender

Epic Fap Session: Mikey1969: This is why although anti-racism laws like Canada and Germany have sound good on paper but don't work in real life. It's similar to anti-hate crime laws here in the US, since they are indeed of vague and open to interpretation, but the hate crime stuff is easier to actually be consistent with. ---Most of the time--- There are still cases where they're really pushing it with the hate crime label, but it's never this silly.

This? This is why you think anti-racism laws don't work? Because occasionally a college goes a little overboard with the PC stuff? Or because the law has a level of ambiguity? I'm sure Germany's neo-Nazi's appreciate your concern.

No, this is a good example of why they don't work. They are too broad and open to interpretation, so people get busted for ridiculous shiat. They sound nice to people who don't take the time to think, but then you end up with people defining "racism" however they want, and things that are in no way racist end up getting someone busted.

I guess I over estimated the ability of some people to comprehend a simple point. Go ahead and recover from your head exploding all over your keyboard and type back yet another reply that misses the point.

I acknowledge the need for enhanced pena ...

Yeah, man.  And how come there are laws that apply specifically to pregnant women, but not other women?  That's totally not fair.  And where the heck are the hospitals for people who aren't sick or injured?  And don't even get me started on the complete lack of restaurants for people who aren't hungry, or that nowhere can you find cemeteries for the living.

2014-03-22 02:38:10 PM
That gif was an attempt to show how 'cool' he was, especially in comparison to his clueless predecessor, who had a gif of him endlessly attempting to open a door in a similar situation. Part of Obama's appeal to younger voters and women is how 'cool' he is portrayed to be by the media because of how young (which is, of course, disgusting age discrimination) and how black he is. I just saw a study that showed that part of the problem black kids have in white schools is that the white kids stereotype them as being cooler than they are as a product* of what they presume to be a rougher life and immediately flock to them for street knowledge, immediately abandoning them and leaving them without friends if they fail to conform to the stereotype.

Therefore, the media's portrayal of Obama as a cool President is helping add to the stereotyping and dehumanizing idolization of young black boys in suburban schools, placing undue pressure on them, and must be stopped now. The best way to solve this is to instead show how he is just the same as his crusty older white male predecessors but, of course, that would be nothing more than a sickening way of sweeping historical oppression under the rug and it would unfairly pigeonhole Obama's accomplishments

So, as you can see, we're faced with a conundrum. Perhaps the best solution is simply to abolish the office of President altogether, as it's elevation and endowment of one human being, who must invariably have subscribe to a gender, a sexuality, a race, a name, an age, a preference between dogs or cats, an educational system that fails society's 'others', a magazine that doesn't equally devote time to every single person on Earth's hobbies, a language, a mobile operating system, and the blatantly ableist fetishization of "good" mental health that is inexplicably demanded of our political leaders ALL contributes to the various forms of capitalist oppression and political disenfranchisement that afflict the unquestionably infallible people of our world. But, as a cisabled hetero cissexual cisethnic white cisgendered non-transcis male from a cismiddleclasscisAmericanbackground, my inherently privileged view of the world invariably skews my thoughts towards oppression, so there's a good chance I'm wrong.

*: This word, which implies that black boys are a commodity, is dehumanizing. I greatly apologize for my disgusting remarks and will immediately check my privilege while lamenting that society has not yet deemed it necessary to put me through a period of rehabilitative incarceration where I can be reeducated and abandon my apparently colonialist attitudes

As someone who's openly gay, I know what you're talking about. I've never had someone been so stupid as to make a remark about top/bottom, but I've had people (for example) inquire if my marriage was "just for tax reasons?" and was told by one person upon the news of our wedding "Enjoy wearing your pretty dress." (we're both men and neither one of us wears a dress, something the person making the comment knew full well).

I still think "microagression" is a stupid word to describe this sort of thing, though. Seems like the concepts of "rudeness" and "insensitivity" covers it fairly well.
