11,000 individual odors, however you can detect a trillion different combinations by combining those 11,000 distinct odors.

I thought it was the French that smelled? Is it Jersey also? It is better to direct smelly fun at the French or at New Jersey. I don't see any French smelly remarks so far. Perhaps France smells OK , but the French stink? Or, does New Jersey stink but it's people do not stink?

Funny thing how people always complain about how New Jersey smells, yet New Yorkers and Pennsylvanians keep coming here to the Jersey Shore for vacation time during the summer. Stop contradicting yourself, either shut up or stop coming if you don't like the smell!

I'm guessing you're young.  Before the ebill goobermint got involved, the chemical plants and refineries in the northern part of the state would release toxic crap directly into the water and air. When I was a kid, riding in the car with my father on the Turnpike, I would try and hold my breath between exits 13 and 14.

Funny thing is that that the research facility is almost in New Jersey. It's in Philly. And it's funded in part by the scent industry, which IS primarily in New Jersey.

OK, maybe it's not all that funny. But I do think it's funny that the primary perfumers in the US are actually in the state with the reputation for the worst stench. And not entirely undeserved, and for the same reasons: they're both industrial processes. Those pleasant odors you get in detergent or added to your food are quite noxious in concentration where they're manufactured.

I am not that young, and it's still that way on the GSTP (though I recommend closing your external air vents instead when driving through that area, it's easier than holding your breath). But I am talking about the people who make fun of NJ, yet come here for vacation, they contradict themselves constantly.

As someone who lives at the shore I can assure you that they are the smell.

Seeing as most things we generally consider to be distinct smells (coffee, roses, etc) are combinations of odours, I don't see the problem.

Are you male folk even partially aware that your genitals also have a distinct smell?

Women don't go on about this, but for some reason, men LOVE to say tuna fish stinky vagina fishy smell smell.

I will have you know, that men's crotches ALSO smell. In fact, even a man who has showered in the last 24 hours can leave a POWERFUL stink on a pair of silk boxers (try pulling them off while he's on his back and WHOOOAAA, back up ladies!)

/no offense, jus sayin...

Well, their garden does have a nice variety of plants: chemical, plastics, refining, manufacturing...

It's worse than that.

FTFA:
- Researchers combined 128 different odor molecules to create composite scents of varying complexity
- 26 test subjects
- hundreds of experiments on each subject
- researchers extrapolated the results to arrive at the 1 trillion average

So...

Apparently, Seth Meyers is a Farker, since he used this headline as a joke in his Late Show monologue tonight.  Either that or one of his staffers is a Farker... or maybe it's a really obvious joke.  I really don't know.
