So it takes place in Tokyo at a High School....great. I wonder which of the shy quiet boys will have a harem of inexplicably hot girls following him around.
I love and watch Cowboy Bebop yearly, but that's because it doesn't fall into  a lot of the repetitive and overdone things I see that have pretty much turned me off from most anime. Although I just watched Kaiji based off the recommendation of someone here a year or two ago, and it was really good, so there's that.
And I'll still give this one a chance, who am I kidding.

After cowboy bebop and samurai champloo, I had high hopes for dandy... but were they crushed.

I'll still give this a chance as well... but I'm much less optimistic

On a summer day ...
A massive terrorist bombing suddenly struck Tokyo.
The culprits behind the act that woke up this complacent nation from its slumber, were just two boys.
Now, the culprits known as "Sphinx" begin a grandiose game that encompasses all of Japan.

Doesn't exactly sound like a light-hearted high-school comedy.

I'm looking forward to it.  I love Bebop and Champloo.  Kids on the Slope was also excellent and it was great to have Watanabe and Yoko Kanno team up together again.  Even including Space Dandy, this group has more than enough goodwill built up that I'm looking forward to this.

Seriously though, what the hell is the deal with Space Dandy?  Before it came out, it was touted as the show that would create another anime boom single-handedly.  Instead, we get a completely episodic show with absolutely zero character development and so-so humor and music.

How many episodes of Champloo ended with 'to be continued' and were never resolved? I'm enjoying Space Dandy. Maybe it all ties together in some multiverse type explanation or it's just one off 'cartoon' shows I don't care. The art and music are well done, certainly has a Bebop (music) and Champloo (art style) to it. Finally an anime that isn't about high school or teen angst.

If Space Dandy manages a really good conclusion, it would definitely go a long way towards making the rest of the series seem a bit better.  I still watch it every week, but it just hasn't floored me the way Watanabe's previous works did.  While the art is amazing, the writing just seems kind of generic.  The episode a couple weeks ago just gave me PTSD flashbacks to Endless Eight.  It needs an episode or two on par with Champloo's baseball episode to really step it up.

Cowboy Bebop is pretty good, but I honestly think its greatness is overstated.

Then again, I'm into old-school mecha space opera and superhero stuff, like Tekkaman Blade, Yu Yu Hakusho, Macross, Gundam... so clearly, I'm missing something.

The most recent anime I've liked is Black Lagoon, and that was a while ago.

Space Dandy seems to be more about letting the animators be animators.  It believe all the behind-the-scenes "guest stars" have had a lot of free reign to do their "thing".  So from a sakuga-fan p.o.v., it's been rather spiffy.  And taken as a bunch of standalone episodes like "classics" were done (think Lupin or some such), it's more fun if you just go along for the ride instead of worrying about the destination.

/For deep details about the "behind-the-scenes-guest-stars", see AniPages.

Black Lagoon. Coldest thing I've ever seen in a movie or cartoon was Balalaika dealing with the remaining twin. So brutal, so awesome.

What is the Japenese's obsession with making characters in their cartoons and video games always children?

lilplatinum: What is the Japenese's obsession with making characters in their cartoons and video games always children?

The prime audience is teenagers, so many series are set in jr or sr high.  The girls often look more...ah, mature then their ages woudl normally look, similar to the treatment of 'teenagers' in American live action shows.

Their population is significantly skewed towards the elderly and middle-aged. Compare that to the US, which is a standard pyramid (for a stable population):

Me too. I thought the zombie episode and the timeloop episode were both great. Some of the humor and pandering is a little cringe-inducing but that's nothing new for anime; I just have to make sure I only watch it around people that can't lose any more respect for me

Yoko Kanno's music for Cowboy Bebop was ridiculously good.  Even if this anime turns out mediocre the soundtrack ought to be superb.

Be warned that the story doesn't really get wrapped up at the end of Attack on Titan.  It's a great series (aside from some pacing problems), but it just sort of ends.  Fortunately, it's been crazy popular in both Japan and the US.  So it's only a matter of time until it gets a second series.

Accel World and Gargantia are interesting and pretty short series. AoT is gonna be loooooong. Maybe One Piece long.
For a series that is totally different than its pictures would have you believe, Demon King Maoyu.

But don't miss Black Lagoon if you are a fan of violence and profanity.img.fark.net

Sword Art Online, a series people either love or hate - there seems to be little middle ground.  It's a "MMO players get trapped in game" story like the classic .hack or the newer Log Horizon.  The latter being surprisingly better than I expected, probably thanks to the slightly older nature of the protagonist (pragmatic college student rather than angsty teenager) and the less dramatic tone in general.

Just finished Madoka Magica several days ago. Very different twist and take on the magical girl genre. That being said, nothing NOTHING will ever be as over the top dramatic as Light Yagami eating a potato chip.

Is it really going to be that long of a series?  I know the manga is still ongoing, but I really prefer series that come to some sort of resolution eventually.

Haha, yea Madoka was a bit of a mindfark. I was expecting your standard magical girl fare, and got...  something else.

Still need to see the new movie, and hope it gets released at non-rape prices...

I don't expect anything high level from Space Dandy and they deliver the stupid in bulk. In other words, good stuff. Because it is supposed to be stupid. Also has good pacing and no arc.

Well, hope its not that long but the manga shows no signs of stopping so, who knows. Could be the next OP or Bleach or what have you.

Also, in regards to Titan: I tried reading it. Couldn't get into it. Too much drama and pages of text and even more hand wringing. I like my manga/anime heavy on pictures and light on text. I love reading, and read a ton of books. That's just not what I want in a manga.
