Ah I love how easy it is to pretend the decline in ratings is because the show doesn't reflect my political views. The self rightgeousness really gives me a half chub.

It couldn't possibly be that the decline in ratings is due to reality show audiences of all political views have the attention spans of gnats and have moved on to the next shiny reality crapfest. Nope, it must be because the several million idiots who were watching this show suddenly came around to my way of thinking. That's gotta be it.

TV's Vinnie: El Freak: FlashHarry: doubled99: American Idol's ratings have gone the same way. Which racist controversy is responsible?

i believe that AI's ratings have dipped because it has simply overstayed its welcome.

ratings fall for many reasons. in this case, the exposure of the head of the DD clan as a vile racist homophobe may have caused his show to flounder.

it's not too hard a concept to grasp.

Question: did this asshats views really surprise anybody? He's a redneck from the deep south, what the hell did people expect?  I'm from the same part of Louisiana these people are from, and I've heard shiat like what this dipshiat said all my life. Hell, it's pretty tame compared to some of the things I've heard. So, if someone didn't want to support a racist homophobe, why in the fark were they watching the show to begin with?

Dude, they're not even rednecks. They're yuppies doing hillbilly cosplay.

Not only that, but the show itsself is REALLY FREAKING BORING.

I mean, at least Pawn Stars has something that is historically interesting on it. This is just a bunch of people being fake on camera. It's like the faux redneck version of the Kardashians, with less boobs.

Putting aside the fact he's a racist, homophobic moron, there is nothing redeeming about this show. It's literally half an hour of people talking about "God" and making duck calls, and occasional hyjink that make E/I shows on PBS look good.

Or it could be it's just all a carefully orchestrated act just like any other reality show and people are finally getting wise to it.

The blue state bigotry is out in force, I see.

I follow the show on Facebook. Its core audience has been biatching for quite some time that the show has become blatantly fake and scripted. There were incidents before Phil's interview that did far more damage, like the episode Si faked a back injury to get that motorized scooter. Fans were in an uproar.

Phil's statements did no damage to the show with its fan base. THey likely agreed (I didn't). The show was done in by gross overexposure and becoming more and more contrived with each season.

I've watched the show and its problem was always that it had only two plots:  fish-out-of-water, and snobs-vs. slobs.

There's only so many times you can do "the guys take the girls hunting, hijinks ensue".

I don't know Willie's stand on homosexuality but he put his money where his mouth is when it comes to "racism"; to wit: his children, two of whom are adopted.  Here be the link:   http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2013/10/duck-dynasty-willie-robertson-o n -adopted-son-lil-will-better-than-meeting-the-president.html

Protip: when decrying racism try not to paint an entire group of people with broad swipes.

Not everyone from 'the deep south' is a racist homophobe. Thanks.

Now, THIS group is. They are also extreme religion practioners. That was heavily edited out in the show, so unless you did research on the company/family/etc, you wouldn't really see any of it.

Unless you assume that, purely based on geographic location, these guys have to subscribe to certain views. And the obvious rebut to that is: ghetto.

The hardcore audience, sure. But there's a substantial periphery audience (like my wife) who tuned out just before the controversy came up. She's from a hunting family so some of it reminded her of her family. She always felt the show was a bit off putting but she chalked it up to her being Canadian and growing up in the United Church (the O'Douls of Christian churches). other members of her family hung in there for a while longer but stopped watching after the controversy came up.

It's also a tough decision to decide who to hate.

Phil's comments were clearly in line with the Bible. So, if you hate him and his beliefs, you have to hate all of Christianity (which you probably already do)...

And if someone is calls themselves a Christian but doesn't agree with what he said, then they're not a Christian.

Phil never said he hated gay people.  He said that God said that their lifestyle was sinful.  Never said God didn't love them.  But the subject is taboo and so people are going to act how they're going to act because people on both sides of the issue get butthurt easily.

I can't fathom it's any backlash from Phil's statements - their core fans weren't going to budge on their love of all things DD just for Phil making a statement consistent with his beliefs:  It just got oversaturated to the point even their core audience started to feel like they were being conned.

When my own mother, a big DD fan, said 'I'm sick of seeing them everywhere', you know their clock is at 14:58.

Actually, I have heard friends that watch Duck Dynasty say it isn't as fun now because of the extra scripted stuff that is included in the already scripted reality show. They say it isn't fun to watch anymore.

It's the same thing that has happened to Pawn Stars. The same thing that happens to all reality shows eventually.

But go ahead thinking that a bunch of gays that didn't even watch the show in the first place are taking viewers away from the show. It fits the uppity liberal narrative.

I believe it's referred to as "scripted reality".  They have the actors follow the plot, take their marks, act out their characters,  but the dialog is mostly improvised.

It's worked for so long because Willie plays a good straight man and Si plays a good wild card.  That's about it as far as acting goes.

I'm from the deep South. I still live here(don't ask me why).  As I said, I'm from the same place that these people are from. My mom even went to  high school with this guy. No, not everybody here is like that, but you're kidding yourself if you think they're a minority, and if you think that racism and homophobia isn't a HUGE problem in this area of the country. There's plenty of people here that would love nothing more than to lock up all the homos and go back to the "good ol' days" of Jim Crow. Compared to some of the rednecks I know(some of them in my own family) this guy's liberal in his views.

You can say that about the kids if you want, and it may be true.

Sort of hard to say that about a guy not having long hair and a beard in the Army, or in high school in the 60's.  They sort of had rules about that.

I think it was more the fact that you couldn't go anywhere over the past 6 months without seeing DD-branded bullshiat everywhere. I went to a sporting goods store that had DD barbells for sale for fark's sake.

Give it 2 years, and we'll be seeing how everyone in the family is filing for bankruptcy and it will be blamed on persecution of their Christian beliefs.

I'm a fan of the show...not necessarily his comments...but I agree with you.  The show has overstayed its welcome, run out of jokes and they're just making up goofy stuff now to fill time.  I predict it'll be off the air at the end of the season.  Phil's comments will have nothing to do with it.  Ratings and the family's lack of desire to care will stop the shows run.  It was fun while it lasted, but it was really only a flash in the pan idea anyway.
