Wow, this is coming out of nowhere (which I suppose if very Kate Bush).

While I'm sure many will not see it, this is one of the biggest announcements in the music industry in years (I'd say bigger than The Stone Roses or The Pixies reforming, bigger than the new Bowie album).  I'm somewhat stunned.

Yes, I know the Dead toured for a long time.

Sorry to nitpick, but one venue does not a tour make.

Good news were I in London, which I wish I were.

I have been in love with Kate Bush since Wuthering Heights, which first came out when I was pubescent. It is one of a very, very short list of records that I absolutely had to own on first hearing.

I am always surprised to discover how relatively little-known Kate is in America. Apparently many Americans don't know that This Woman's Work is a Kate Bush song. And some of the geeks here may well know Running Up That Hill better through the Placebo cover that has featured in a lot of shows including Warehouse 13 and Stargate:Universe.

My introduction to Kate Bush:

"Hey cool, this chick wrote a song about pi. Let's have a listen..."

Threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee point one fourrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr one five niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine two six fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive...

"Oh, FFS."

So what did you hear it as?  For years, I thought it was "She's so sexy, yeah"

For me, it was "She's so popular."

"She's so popular", which a lot of people think the lyrics actually are.

/At least here I'm not alone in my confusion
//As opposed to "Killing With an A-Bomb"

She's definitely one of those artists whose names sounds familiar but unless you got turned on to them you wouldn't know much more than that.  Lou Reed has always been like that for me.  I know he's supposed to be great, but I never seem to hear anything of his (except that recently there was a song of his playing while people shot at each other for a video game commercial.)

My first exposure to Kate Bush.  was her cover of Rocket Man on the "Two Rooms" tribute album for Elton John and Bernie Taupin.  It was memorable mostly for the fact that it was the first time anyone, original or on  cover, didn't mumble the line "burning up his fuse up here alone."  I'd always wondered what those words were.  If you like nothing else about Kate Bush, you'll like the fact that she enunciates.

I've bumped into her music here and there, mostly by accident.  Almost always it's a case of hearing a song, liking it, looking up the details on google/wikipedia/whatever, and finding that it's a Kate Bush cover.  The Placebo cover of Running Up That Hill is, quite frankly, better than the original (which says a LOT, because I also loved the original when I found it).  The Wuthering Heights album is amazing, and deserves(ed) a lot more attention than it got, on this side of the pond anyway.

Bush? That's gross. I found a bunch of Bush in my father's collection.

Yeah, this is huge. I'm seriously contemplating a flight across the pond to see her. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy. (She's not a fan.)

My Kate Bush experience..

"Hmm...I see this woman's records around quite a bit, and she is pretty hot looking...let's see what all the fuss is about"

(drops needle on one of her albums)

"WowohwowohwowohwowWHOOOOOP....beautiful".

"Hmm..that one wasn't very enjoyable...let's try another one".

(drops needle on another album)

"Some sAAay that KNOWLEDGE IS something sat in your lap.
Some sAAy that KNOWLEDGE IS something that you never have. "

"Hmm...that sucks, too...one more".

(drops needle on another album)

"Hmm...are those dogs howling?...wow, she's like majorly screechy...like fingernails on a chalkboard..."

Final analysis...good looking lady, unlistenable music.

The old USA Network show "Night Flight" would show a Kate Bush concert. Even though I knew very little about her I usually watched it.
