(YouTube)   Billy Joel and Jimmy Fallon use a tape loop to form a 2 man doo-wop group singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" with additional 4 part harmony. Let's see Letterman try and top that   ( youtube.com) divider line

Totally awesome use of talent and technology.

2014-03-21 03:56:50 AM
I admit, I was smiling when they pulled it off.

Like him or hate him, night after night Fallon proves he has more to offer than Leno ever did.

Well, that was fun 8) Thanks, Subby.

I am not Fallon's biggest fan, but that was great stuff.

The last song on the show, Billy Joel singing "You May Be Right" was also a real treat. No doubt it is on YouTube somewhere by now.

Ha, awesome man. That was a home run.

2014-03-21 08:43:32 AM
I may need to start putting that show on my DVR.

I found an iPad app "Loopy" that looks like what was on the screen when the camera panned down to the desk.  No idea how their voices got into the app, though.  It didn't look like there was anything in the mic jack.  Wireless mics, maybe?

While I'm not the biggest fan of Fallon, comparing him to Leno is like comparing apples and oranges... to Leno.

Bluetooth mic most likely. You can get one of those, download an app and have a cheap karaoke machine for your next party.

As long as Jimmy plays to his strengths he's gonna be an awesome hit. His monologue-fu is weak, if he transitions it to something more like a sitdown weekend update thingy it'll be good. The hashtag bit is great, and it should replace the monologue (#Obama - I just peed in all 35 bathrooms at the Whitehouse - Bored) .  His music, spoofs and games are really fresh and new at 11:30.

He's just a happy guy, and it really comes through the screen at you. I hope he gets enough ratings to stay on. Definitely a bright spot in the vast TV wasteland. Izreallycool we now have Jimmy with Craig afterwards. Solid two hours of fun...

Yeah... I have NEVER watched late nthg TV, but dammit, they keep putting out good videos from this show. I might have to start. As someone else said, he's already been more interesting and entertaining than Leno eve was.

Fallon + music= fantastic

Fallon + anything else = weak.

Fallon is still brand new. The new thing will fade, and he will start to slide. He already is.

The same people that tell us Fallon is going to rule said the same thing about Conan. Twice.

Let's clap and cheer while someone is recording a loop.

Waldo Pepper: Leno followed and had to fill Carson's shoes and had basically the same audience that Carson worked. Fallon's gets to follow Leno and brought his own audience with him.

LENO!! That's the name! I was trying to remember whats-his-name's name. Jake Lenny? James Lemon? Just couldn't remember (like post-election Stephen Colbert wrt Mitt Romney).

/Would love to see download stats for the Loopy HD app covering the time of a week or so ago through a week or two after last night.
//Also rapidly becoming a fan of Fallons's "Ragtime Gals" Barbershop Quartet.
///He's still no Carson, but then again, he doesn't need to be, any more than Carson was Paar or Parr was Allen, nor that either needed to be.
////More importantly, he's no Leno. Thank goodness for that.

LOL. Nice! Billy Joel can sing!!

Whoever owns that app should bump up their price to $20 for everyone that's about to buy it as this goes viral.

Letterman rolls his eyes, turns off the TV and goes back to banging hot interns.

2014-03-21 02:45:14 PM
Really? A dig at Letterman? Because Jimmy Fallon did some bit you liked?

David Letterman > 100 Fallons.

I disliked him on SNL and I don't watch late night shows but the clips of his that I end up watching online are pretty fantastic.

Same.   He seems to be a lot better at being an unscripted/less scripted entertainer than he was on SNL.

Technically, there was no "tape" involved, but it was awesome none the less.

There was a piece of scotch tape holding the lyric sheet to the monitor. So THERE!

Yeah, when I first saw Fallon do anything, a long time back, I made some kind of snap judgement based on his looks and mannerisms, I guess.  Didn't care to see him again.

Over the last few years I've been completely converted and it's because he has actual talent beyond being able to stand in front of an audience while being witty.  Also he has a really great band backing his show; The Roots are the possibly the best late night show band on the air.  Sorry, Paul Shaffer and friends.

Probably through one of these: http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/ duet.php

Those were very high dollar Sennheiser wireless mics they had, so they would have gone to a real console then through (in and out) the Apogee interface.

Damn you Fallon. I'm slowly becoming converted.

Fallon's musical schtick is going to run out fast at this rate.

2014-03-21 08:13:27 PM
I'm surprised I haven't seen this in the thread yet.

"He's not much of a comedian or actor, but he's a hell of an Entertainer."

/he's still no Craig Ferguson
//But Fallon's awesome in his own way

Just out of curiosity... do they rehearse these things ahead of time?

Nail on the head. Though there's a few actors he can do solid impressions of, so that's something I guess. And to subby, Letterman gives zero shiats about competing with Fallon for youtube hits, he's been coasting towards retirement for years.

2014-03-21 11:12:46 PM
Bobby McFerrin can teach them a thing or two about doing that.  KT Tunstall uses that sort of thing pretty well too.  Screw the farkhaters.  I like her stuff.

There was a cable connected to the dock connector, no idea what it was connected to, but probably a sound break out, they would have had to amplify the output as well.

Leno was a very bad impression of Carson.

Good or bad, Fallon does his own thing.

I had no idea the Jewish guy from HBO's Rome that did Attia's dirty work could sing. That was good.
