I haven't checked on the release date, but I remember hearing the song frequently during the summer of '82. Along with Tainted Love, by Soft Cell, and Heat of the Moment, by Asia. My favorite Human League song didn't come out until 1984 - The Lebanon.

This is up there on my list of songs that seems benign if you don't listen to the lyrics, but aren't if you do.  See "Every Breath You Take" and "It's Cold Outside" other examples off the top of my head.
