IIRC, there was a program called Spring Break In Appalachia wherein you would spend a week in the mountains and hollers of Appalachia helping people who couldn't help themselves.

It really gives you perspective on how lucky you are to be born to a privileged class, because there are some really, really weird and farked up people out there scraping by on tree fungus and grass.

babies. Especially the Irish. Although death is least funny when it happens to a child

All joking aside, thats sad and depressing. Especially as someone struggling for years to even have a shot at having a kid.

All joking aside, aside, came for the juggalo pic. Leaving happy, but, feeling very guilty for it.

Sorry, kids. You're being weirdos. Nobody does this. Stop doing this. If you bring this weird nonsense up in casual conversation with normal people, you'll wish you hadn't.

Oh dear lord - job interviews. For pity's sake, leave this out of your job interview. You'll think you're saying one thing, but what you're really saying is that you're a weirdo and, you know what? I hope you're a damned good baby-coffin maker because that's what you'll be for the rest of your working life. NPR-famous, poor and miserable.

Why don't they just cremate the kid? Gotta be 3 times faster than an adult.

2014-03-21 01:49:14 AM
Noble, but yeah. kinda odd.
So if the parents are too poor to bury the kid, what do they do with them? Prop them up in a chair with a beer in one hand and a remote in the other, while telling it "don't worry, you'll grow up to be big and strong!"? Or use them as a counter piece?

It'll probably save them a ton of bucks, long term.

They will still probably get popped for the service, plot and marker. Which is a shame.

Still it could be worse. Could be the paupers cemetery on Hart Island, NY. Convicts bury them three deep there in long trenches. Maybe a third are babies and infants. 300,000 of them. Many unnamed, unwanted, and forgotten. Total of all graves is like one million. Ya, one million. And worst of all, no one can visit.

Point: This brings back some very sad memories for me. (Specifically, if the foetus before me hadn't died, I would not be here. Great thing to tell a teenager, even greater thing to know you're all but an accident.)

Counterpoint: Good for these people--doing something meaningful instead of getting shiatfaced on cheap bear and an STD-ridden woman.

I watched the video. After seeing those tiny coffins and the silk pillows, I can't joke about this. These are compassionate people doing really good work.

2014-03-21 04:47:25 AM
From personal experience I can tell you there is nothing more emotionally painful then havibg to go to a funeral home and choose a coffin for your child. Getting a bill for that and the hospital and ending up with a shovel in hand because you are now too poor to afford someone else to help with the burial is beyond traumatic on a family.

Joke all you like and yeah, some of them were funny. But these kids are worth their weight in gold to me for what they are doing for people who's place I've been in.

Huck And Molly Ziegler: "Florida" tag is completely undeserved. I'd say at least "Interesting" or better yet, "Spiffy."

I agree, the Florida tag should really be for mocking the derp that comes out of that state. I sort of want to say this deserves the Hero tag, but I'm not sure if that would be fully appropriate.

Despite how odd, or possibly morbid as it comes across, these people are really trying to do something good to help parents during their worst possible moment in life. We kind of need a new specialty tag for this, but I'm not sure what that would be.  "Honorable" or something to say we salute the subjects of the story, but maybe the Hero tag seems too strong, and I know people complain a lot about the over use of the Hero tag.

Once upon a time, dead babies were so common the use of wood to make coffins for all of them would have seriously impacted the forest industry and economics. They were buried in sacks. Used sacks at that.

2014-03-21 05:38:21 AM

Yeah, but it makes him feel powerful to imagine that mediocrities like him will somehow stand in the way of kids like this in life - as if he could, on the best day of his life.

Sometime I like to see good news about my home state myself. I'm cool about the Florida tag use here.

God knows, it deserves to be mocked a lot for all the silliness that goes on down there.

My suggestion to both of you...consider foster parenting.  Ignore the crappy stories out there about how foster parents are evil, or the system fails the children, etc.  Fostering is really worth every bit of paperwork and preparation, and you'll certainly have a chance to adopt through it, as I've seen many other foster families do.

I was considering fostering and older child adoption (for much farther down the line) until I found pages and pages of warnings from people saying how their lives were ruined beyond repair because of their experiences. I'm not about to sacrifice my life, happiness, and marriage for that kind of bullishiat
