Oh. THAT kind of Muslim.  Meh.  I'm not allowed to carry a gallon jug of water there.  It has to be a small bottle. Their rules are somewhat arbitrary, but they have strict rules. You don't like them, go somewhere else.

Some people call the gym, "Gay Church" so maybe not being able to fark in the locker room or being able to sissy grunt while curling a 5lb weight is a restriction on their religious freedom.

McDaniel alleges in a lawsuit filed by her attorney, Rachel Higgins, that she explained the requirements of her religion but was told only that she could wear a baseball cap.

Planet Fitness attorney Erika Anderson said, "My client's position is that they didn't know the head covering was for religious purposes

Wouldn't the argument be a scarf could get caught in the equipment whereas a cap couldn't?

2014-03-20 08:59:24 PM
Your gym has a dress code????

2014-03-20 09:01:07 PM
No judgment (unless you're Muslim)(or lifting enough weight to actually exert yourself).

2014-03-20 09:01:13 PM
Ah Planet Fitness. The gym that removed squat racks because one member found them intimidating. And I've heard of other locations that have banned deadlifts for the same reason.

That's because they're not a gym, they're Planet Fitness

Liability. You'd bet she'd sue their asses off if it got caught in a non scarf friendly treadmill.

She shouldn't be wearing a hijab that could get caught in a treadmill, if she's Muslim.

She has a sincerely held religious belief that god wants her to wear a certain kind of hat. I've been told I should respect this sort of thing, for some reason.

According to her deposition, the Quran "is pretty specific on covering your hair" and dressing modestly

such a modest head cover

2014-03-20 09:07:27 PM
I'm glad she's wearing that scarf, without it I probably would have raped her, just like the other 10,000 women I've encountered in the gym. Good told me it was totes OK because of a meteor or something I dunno LOL

2014-03-20 09:07:28 PM
At the Coors gym, an employee said the dress code was sometimes waived but that it couldn't be in her case because the head covering was red, according to the complaint.

I can see going the liability route, but I have no idea what this means.

Planet Fitness booted me over this head covering:

She'd have to be having her head touching on the belt as it's rotating to have any sort of risk related to that. How many other strawmen will you go for?

2014-03-20 09:14:31 PM
Right, so on the one hand you want to let people wear whatever head covering thier imaginary friend told them to wear, or you get terrible PR.

In the other hand, that's not a hijab. That's a head scarf like the kind women wear when their hair is a mess, so I can see how some bored gym checker person could be confused about how that scarf is a religious requirement.

2014-03-20 09:14:46 PM
The Planet Fitness idiots probably thought they could get away with messing with here because she was 1) a woman, 2) black, 3) muslim.

They have no idea of who they are messing with.

Weird, I went to one for awhile and it wasn't like that. There were some guys there that could clean an Oldsmobile and the only time I got called out for noise was when I was grunting "bro" while doing preacher curls. How the hell can you ban deadlifts?

I'm all for religious freedom and such, but this isn't what this is about.  Yes, most businesses are accommodating, but private businesses have no obligation to bend over everytime says "But God told me to..."

10 bucks a month? and have to put up with that bullshiat? By not abiding by the rules, the gym should break her contract. She can go to a Muslim gym. Don't believe that "religion of paece" crap for a second. They're just as hypocritical as anyone else.

2014-03-20 09:45:45 PM
I actually respect black female Americans who become Muslim as a strategy to avoid casual sex. Yes, black women are considered more "easy" than white and starting to have sex at a young age is considered normal, particularly by black men and the girl's social peers. One way to avoid getting knocked up before age 18 is to have a religion where it is a sin for a woman to touch a man (even by shaking hands) outside of the family. As a result, black female muslims tend to be better educated than their counterparts.

Guy walks in wearing shiat kickers, cowboy hat, and jeans...he is not following the dress code and is tossed out, no one bats an eye.

Guy walks in wearing baggy pants down to his knees, lose fitting baggy top, and gang bandanna, guy gets tossed out not following the dress code, no one bats an eye.

Woman walks in wearing goofy ass head covering that her invisible man in the sky told her to wear that is a danger to herself and the equipment, and is muslim, gets told she has to follow dress code imaginary friends or not, OMG HOW DARE THEY OPPRESSION OPPRESSION HATE MONGERS OMG!

2014-03-20 09:52:09 PM
Attention whore. BOW DOWN BEFORE ME AND MY AWESOME HAT, INFIDELS!

The only reason she "converted" was so she could mess with everybody else. If she's so goddam smart why did she purposely join a religion that treats women like property? Submissive kink?

I'm pretty sure that's what the ban is about. Zero tolerance head coverings especially red and blue ones, though apparently baseball caps are okay.

Also:
McDaniel's civil lawsuit, filed under the New Mexico Human Rights Act and the Unfair Practices Act, alleges Planet Fitness illegally based the decision to deny her access upon her religion, or alternatively upon her race - she is African American - and that the gym had no legitimate or non-pretextual reason to deny her entry.

Wait wait wait - if you're feeling you've been discriminated against and you have more than one affirmative action bonus points characteristic, you can sue and claim either/or, even with zero evidence of either?

Right, and at what point does the gym have a legal right to set a dress code? I mean, sure, I may want to work out in a gimp suit, but that doesn't mean it should be allowed.

I'm surprised there isn't more support for this poor discriminated against woman. I thought most Farkers believed that private businesses *had* to service everyone regardless of whether or not that persons lifestyle choices broke the owners rules. Y'all are a bunch of Muslim hating suminabiatches.
