"we'll quickly get a pro forma response about how weak and vacillating this is from Bill Kristol, John McCain, and Charles Krauthammer."

This dude should share his lotto numbers.

No sizable assets frozen, just a few people banned from entering the US and a bank that has already pulled their dollar reserves. Big deal. The President, if he really wanted could destroy the Russian economy pretty easily and now that Merkel has decide Putin is a loon and acting against German interest, there is a chance of real sanctions instead of the President's threat of future sanctions. Obama has  signed a new executive order that would allow him to impose sanctions on "key sectors of the Russian economy." But has yet to implement.

People are making such a big fuss out of nothing

We issued token sanctions against Russia and they responded in kind.

This isn't gonna start a new cold war, or a new arms race, or anything at all.

Its all a bunch of dick swinging

I like the sanctions, but subby might need to go rub one out before priapism sets in.

Interesting dichotomy: The defense industry's congressional reps all want to declare war. The oil industry's congressmen all want them to STFU and not screw up the billions being made dealing with both of the players in this.

If only there were some sort of legislative body which represented the interests of the actual citizens...

I'm still waiting to find out what a True Amurican would do about Crimea.

They seem to lack any details beyond "whatuver that Obummer ain't doin".

Ok, Go ahead and imagine Iraq.... now picture Afghanistan...

now double the amount of money we spent there, and lives, but 3 times as fast but twice as long.

Doesn't that just get your jingo-conservative-war-boner hard.

So in other words, we're keeping our options open instead of doing everything all at once, leaving ourselves with no further actions short of military conflict.

Regardless of what your personal position is, if you think the commenters on Fark are right leaning, you're insane. I would guess 20-30% conservative...tops.

It's the whole package really. I mean, it's good that we hit them, but not "heroic", IMO.

The reaction forgets history: Kruschev gave Crimea to Ukraine, Putin took it back. Both were calculated acts. The notion of Ukrainian territorial sanctity is ludicrous.

Hmm, I wonder what Putin's next move will be. These sanctions are the real deal, but Putin's ego is also a force to be reckoned with.

So, if the pressure makes him want to pull out of Crimea, how does he save face while doing it?

About sanctions - you don't get it, do you, people? Most of those oligarchs were "made" by Putin. He may "unmake" them with the same ease. Putin giveth, Putin taketh away. Every single one of them will tell Putin that it's no big deal and he supports Putin and Russia without any hesitation, and he will mean it. Or else.

Money may be power in the West, but in Russia, still, Power is Power. There is a possibility of oligarchs trying to make some kind of plot, but the consequences of failure are horrendous, so the possibility is rather small.

Now I won't say those sanctions are completely toothless; even if oligarchs will not bother Putin, they may try to softly influence the politics of Russia into less aggressive path, in future. But it will not influence current situation.

F*ck sanctions on Russia, those commie fascist dick-wavers need to taste justice - spicy, radioactive NUCULAR justice! America needs to jam a big old nuke up Pooty-poot's poop chute and pull the cord, blow that overtestosteroned Hitler wanna-be to the Moon, and then ride in on the backs of Abrams, Hummers, and anything else that sucks up gas like a kid with a milkshake and liberate the f*ck out of those Russkies.

/or at least that's what I keep hearing when people criticize Obama's response so far

pushcart: The reaction forgets history: Kruschev gave Crimea to Ukraine

No one "forgets" that, it's mentioned in every article about the crisis and in every thread. You'd be better off asking if anyone's ever said "Crimea river" yet.
