Are people under the impression that every single person who attends Berkeley is a hippie? The conservative speakers would routinely get huge crowds when I was there.

/former VP of Berkeley College Republicans
//organized and invited conservative speakers to campus

Berkeley, at least when I was hanging around in the early 00's, was a hotbed for Lyndon Larouche supporters and other wackjobs. UC Berkeley also employs noted neocon goon John Yoo. So this isn't terribly surprising. Unless you're a farkwit from the Daily Caller.

let me guess - he advocated drug legalization?

2014-03-20 04:54:20 PM
This isn't the 60s. San Francisco is fairly conservative. And you have to be fairly rich to get into Berkeley. So there aren't a lot hippies we're talking about here.

2014-03-20 05:02:49 PM

FlashHarry: let me guess - he advocated drug legalization?

Nope, oversight and investigation into the CIA and NSA over what they know about you, and how legal was the method of getting that info. So hardly divisive stuff.

Talk is cheap and old habits die hard.

"Old habits" like voting for a party whose stated policies seem to care about you, your family, and your quality of life? Yeah, that kind of lunacy is just so difficult to move past.

A libertarian gets applause for wanting to roll back the "security state"? No surprise.

// do they not remember that Rand approves of drone-striking a dude who steals $50 from a liquor store?
// classic case of not reading the whole package
// if I had a nickel for every time I had to explain that "libertarians" aren't really as awesome as they claim, I could make my own Free Market

Young people love Rand Paul. My boys are 22 and 24, they, and all of their friends and peers love the guy.

FTFA "if President Paul were to spend eight years actually governing as a civil libertarian"

Too bad Paul is nothing like a civil libertarian, he just plays the part and is the same old authoritarian douche bag his dad was, he just wants the states to play the role of Big Brother and not the Feds.

2014-03-20 05:54:47 PM
Whatever subby. Berkeley has gotten disturbingly conservative in the past 10 years.

Umm letting the states decide is kinda being a civil libertarian.

I was going to guess that they were applauding the fact that his speech was over and he was leaving.

2014-03-20 05:59:56 PM
Um OK.  I like how the story about him getting a "standing ovation" links back to another Daily Caller story.

would they say he's a righteous dude?

That's because going to college today is the equivalent of getting mugged for $100,000.

Because "letting the states decide" isn't code for the "right" to discriminate.

When it comes to winning nontraditional Republican votes, not showing up has been the self-fulfilling cardinal sin that keeps on giving.
So kudos to Rand for doing just that.

Aren't conservatives the ones always complaining that todays youth are too coddled - that all of them get participation awards regardless of how well they actually do?

2014-03-20 06:10:34 PM
So if President Paul were to spend eight years actually governing as a civil libertarian (ending drone strikes against everyone but liquor store robbers, etc.),

2014-03-20 06:12:06 PM
So if President Paul were to spend eight years actually governing as a civil libertarian (ending drone strikes, etc.),

This is what drives me mad. He is not for ENDING drone strikes in fact he thinks we should be able to use them on American soil to get terrorists. He does this shiat where he speaks out against something and people lick it up and but actually isn't against the policy at all.

Lots of people are being fooled that he is some sort of civil rights libertarian - He is not.

Why in the hell did I read that as "standing ovulation".  (sigh) I need a nap.

No it's not. A civil libertarian believes that NO government gets to decide your liberties state or otherwise.

No it's called confederacy and we know how well that worked for civil rights.

All kinds of ways the poor judgment of youth can manifest itself. For us it was unprotected sex, drugs of unknown provenance, and kids going apesh*t in mosh pits and losing a few teeth or worse.

But there's foolishness, and then there's clapping for Ron Paul. These kids today!

Triumph: The speech:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vFhXpfEfQg

My guess is he pretended he was for civil rights but amazingly failed to mention he thinks gay marriage should be banned by government, women should not be able to have abortion in any cases, women can be restricted on access to contraception, people can be bombed in the US with no trial, and pot should still be illegal.

This is true.  They like "free pot" and "vaccines bad" and homeschool (because science isn't about Gaia) and don't give a shiat about much else.

Civil rights for corporations!! Do they currently have any civil rights at all? No! Therefore to fight for their rights is the most Berkeley of all!

He's all for freedom - The freedom to enact Republican policies as federal laws, and to overrule Democratic policies as "states' rights"

DamnYankees: Are people under the impression that every single person who attends Berkeley is a hippie?

Short answer:  Yes.  The general conservative idea of Berkeley here in Georgia is that it's still 1968 and Reagan is sending in the National Guard to crack some hippie skulls.

Every dorm floor used to have a resident communist.  He has been replaced with a libertarian.

Most of his and his daddies supporters are/were young.  Much like diapers, they'll grow out of him(and learn to stop shaiting their pants).

That's a Bingo!

RAND PAUL's pseudolibertarian mishmash babble of selfish me-first fiscal policy, historical revisionism and "small government" rhetoric tailored to whichever audience he happens to be bleating in front of probably plays well with Millennials who have the same core values and short attention spans.

Hopefully, whoever does pick up the Democrat reins for 2016 will take note of this demographic's nascent brain damage, and respond accordingly.

This.

I never encountered a self-proclaimed Marxist at college, but boy did I meet my fair share of bearded/hipster self-proclaimed Libertarians. Most of them smoked cigarettes and whined about the unfairness of being required to smoke a dozen feet away from a building.

They were a whiny, entitled group of smug individualists with near identical talking points. Day after day after day after day.

2014-03-20 08:05:31 PM
Don't a lot of O.C. kids go there?  Figures.

2014-03-20 08:07:55 PM
"Can Rand Paul Reach Young Progressives?"

Well, if he talks to them the way he talked to students at Howard University, then probably no.

How does LaRouche do that?  Is there a way I can get bunches of young people across the country to set up card tables to beg for money and espouse whatever sociopolitical whargarbl I happen to think up?  Do I have to get convicted of mail fraud and tax fraud to make it work, or is that part optional?

Whoa, that's a stunner. Can't for the life of me think of somebody who could get elected president doing that. I mean, nobody would fall for THAT line of smooth-talking horseshiat, would they? You'd have to be a real chump to vote for somebody like that.
