GRRM leaves lots of subtle foreshadowing clues as to a character's demise, so it really should never be a surprise.  I think it was westeros.org that went through all of them, catalogued them to try to come up with common themes, phrases, occurrences to see if there's a way to predict other character deaths going forward.  I don't remember the exact details because it's been a while since I was so deeply immersed myself, but I think the gist of it was that they had actually come up with a single unifying theme that was a good predictor as to whether a character lives or dies:

1) All men must die.

Well, not spoiling anything, if you really think about it, there's a MUCH better listener that's a series regular I would argue is more pivotal to how things finally play out than Sansa.

That, also it's seems like the stronger you hold to some sort of code, the more likely you are to get offed. Even if your code isn't moral. In Westeros if you don't bend, you will break.

"The flames crackled softly, and in their crackling she heard the whispered name Jon Snow. His long face floated before her, limned in tongues of red and orange, appearing and disappearing again, a shadow half-seen behind a fluttering curtain. Now he was a man, now a wolf, now a man again. But the skulls were here as well, the skulls were all around him. Melisandre had seen his danger before, had tried to warn the boy of it. Enemies all around him, daggers in the dark. He would not listen."

Dies of AIDS.   It is known.

It's funny how this thread spoiled Jon's lame "death" which will happen no sooner than late season 5, if the show even bothers doing it,  but nobody has mentioned the two major character deaths coming in season 4.

I dont' recall this from the books.  He was stabbed repeatedly and descended upon, but I don't see the rest.  In fact, Jon's last chapter ends with: "he never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold..."

It's not on Netflix, believe me I looked. It wasn't until we upgraded our DirecTV to have HBO On Demand that we binged and got caught up. If we had not upgraded, I could have streamed it online with HBOOD but did not realize it till recently.
