I'm gonna try to take Takei's stance on this, which was:

"I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding 'God Hates Freds' signs, tempting as it may be.
He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end."

I hope some idiots don't stage some sort of troll protest of his funeral.

Every funeral deserves to be a somber occasion for the loved ones of the departed to reflect and say goodbye to that person in their own way. Just because this family doesn't understand this doesn't mean inflicting such suffering on them will make them suddenly realize how sick it is. We're better than that.

fark those people, too. There were soldiers who died who were fathers, sons, brothers, mothers, daughters, and this goddamn cancer didn't give a fark about any of that. When you get rid of a cancer in your body, you shouldn't have to put up with people giving you bullshiat lines like "aw, that's a shame, why couldn't you two find a way to live with each other peacefuly?". fark that. Oh,aye. I'm feeling a twinge or two of schaudenfreud, but I always try my hardest not to hate, since.. I dunno. It seems a poison.

BUT, that's also *REALLY EASY* for me to say, because as a straight middle class white boy, who was never once a target of their ire, nor ever directly affected by those who held simillar beliefs.

So it may be too easy for me to 'take the high road', as it were. Makes me wonder how I'd feel were I, say, Takei, whose grace (and who had to hide his own sexuality for so long!) is much more impressive.

Actually, they make a living through real jobs (some with the state). They don't make nearly enough through litigation to pay for their $200,000+ annual expenditures.

I'm over the point of thinking they're just insanely good litigation trolls. They're just a hateful, evil group of human filth. If anything, the fear of litigation protects them at their protests. But they are not attacked enough to think they pay for everything through litigation.

What an awful, sad, disgusting little tale.  A man so filled with hate that he built his entire community around vitriol to pretty much everyone.  Who thought the best way to express his views was to pour bile on people at their most hurt and vulnerable. Who prepared so thoroughly a legacy of shunning and hatred that his own family and the church he founded excommunicated him when he softened by the fraction of an inch it took to suggest that perhaps his parishioners not be total dicks to each other, just everybody else.

He died having been rejected from the only community he valued, with several children having abandoned him, in a hospice.

I have no love for Fred Phelps, and I hope that, for even just a second before he passed, that he realized the enormity of his assholery.  It's one thing to be a hateful fark yourself, but to teach it to your children and to build a whole community around it, that's just sick.  I hope he felt a pang for every person he hurt, for every decent human being he insulted, and for every soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country that he dared to use as a political tool.

If there is any justice in this universe, he's getting shown the error of his ways right now, and he will understand why he will rightfully be forgotten, consigned to at best a footnote in human history.

Even in death Fred succeed with one last troll, and there's plenty of takers. For myself, I would quote the Bard of Avon:

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest--
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men--
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
He hath brought many captives home to Rome
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

He is a monster that thrives on the innocence of others, the breaths of infants that are taken too soon sustain him. Every culture, living and dead, has known a Cheney. One is hating others and celebrating their deaths due only to their sexuality, religious preference, or the fact that they served in the military, etc., regardless of what kind of person they were or how many lives they touched for the better.

The other is hating someone and celebrating his death because he was a horrible person who used his life to inflict as much pain and suffering onto others as he possibly could.

Not even remotely the same thing.

People who hate Fred hate him for what he does and how he hurt so many grieving people.

I must respectfully disagree. This man made it his life's work to hurt other people. By exploiting "loopholes" in our society we were not able to stop him despite a very broad consensus that he should stop. Now, we are free of him and his hateful acts and that IS something I will gladly celebrate.

Basically, if there is an afterlife full of hippies, I hope he is there and hopelessly surrounded by a cloud of patchouli-scented glory.

TrixieDelite: I'd prefer to believe that Fred is in a custom-built Hell. Not one with fire and brimstone and rabid dogs, but more like the Castro: scantily-clad queens running amok through the hallways, yelling, "Bring it, sister!" and, "Oh no you di'int!" while waving huge rainbow flags and doing the YMCA on full repeat. And the entire place smells like a santorum smoothie, and everyone in the bathroom has a wide stance. And Fred is only allowed to wear leather S&M garb for eternity while the sisters rub up against him in the most carnal of ways.

What did these poor queens do to end up having to work in Hell? See, the problem with that vision is that it would only confirm to them that Hell is where all gays should be.

Real Hell should be rounding up all the bigots like him in a reflective, sealed dome, with lots of high-powered megaphones so they can shout at each other for all times. While this is happening, images and videos should be shown on the inside walls of people just being happy, straight, gays, bi, couples, singles, mothers, fathers, old people, kids, kittens, just going around enjoying life. Each one of these cranks, will spend eternity trying and failing to convince each other (because they all think they hold all truths) and raging about it, knowing that no one outside that room is missing them one bit and that they will forgotten as the world moves forward.

I can't imagine a worse punishment for someone who spent so much time and energy trying to mark the world with his beliefs.

Rogers took one look and said: "You will not be my neighbor."

I can see Mr. Rogers sitting Phelps down and saying "You're a very angry man. You should find a way to not be so angry, it only makes you unhappy all the time."

Then he'd get Phelps to say "I don't belong here", and down the chute he'd go of his own volition. It's the Fred Rogers way.

And Lo, Lord Rogers rose and smote the one who would spread hate while bearing his name?

.. Except that I can't actually see Mr. Rogers *SMITING* anyone.

So it would have to be

"And Lo, Merciful Rogers did rise and sit down with the one who spread hate with a simillar name, and in doing so said how he was disappointed with the man and how much better he could have done with his life, and so the man, full of sadness, passed on"

.. Which is not quite as dramatic.

Just because this family doesn't understand this doesn't mean inflicting such suffering on them will make them suddenly realize how sick it is. We're better than that.

I have been thinking something similar for the last few days. As tempting as it is for many of the people who understandably despise him and everything he stood for, to imitate the WBC tactics would show that their mission to debase our civil society by spreading hatred has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

On the flip side, open displays of compassion toward Phelps or the WBC risk being seen as supportive of their views, even if they are only intended to show the family the type of compassion that they so regularly and purposefully denied to others.

So I think that the best course of action is to just ignore the situation altogether. After all, the WBC craves attention over everything else.

Sounds like common sense to me.

If God is omniscient, he knew every damned sinner's ultimate destiny before he even created them. If he knew their destiny, and had the power to change it, he effectively chose their destiny by declining to change it. This is inescapable truth given the most popular theological predicates in modern Christianity; i.e., God is omnipotent, God is omniscient, and the unsaved go to Hell.

That means God made most people alive, and who ever have, and who ever will walk the Earth, knowing full well they'd burn forever for the personal amusement of the Lord Jesus Christ and fundamentalist Christians.

What a monumental asshole. Anyone with a conscience would rebel against this diabolical f*ck.

No wonder he wanted to keep us ignorant of the difference between good and evil.

"On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?"

I hope that the end result of this is that the WBC splinters and falls apart without him and we can be done with this nonsense.  Phelps may have possibly been the worst person in America, he seemed to completely lack any thread of decency or compassion for anyone else so as far as I'm concerned he deserves little in return.

It would be amusing if there was a massive protest at his funeral...and by protest I mean thousands of people show up holding no signs and making no noise but sending the message that they could at any point....let's see how his family reacts to their own medicine.

Felgraf: NeverDrunk23: Today is Fred Rogers birthday.

Coincidence?

And Lo, Lord Rogers rose and smote the one who would spread hate while bearing his name?

.. Except that I can't actually see Mr. Rogers *SMITING* anyone.

So it would have to be

"And Lo, Merciful Rogers did rise and sit down with the one who spread hate with a simillar name, and in doing so said how he was disappointed with the man and how much better he could have done with his life, and so the man, full of sadness, passed on"

.. Which is not quite as dramatic.
/Though the idea of getting a "I'm Dissapointed In You" speech from mister rogers is weirdly terrifying. Well, terrifying's not quite the right word. Ego-crushing?

Well, I mean, if I believed in a second coming of Jesus, I'd suggest that we've already seen it in Fred Rogers. (He's come and gone, but his legacy of being kind to your fellow human beings and also animals lives on. He spread the word, man. If there were a Church of Fred I'd consider going.)

So... yeah, I would never want to disappoint him. Because it would be a quiet, gentle disappointment and that's worse than a yelling sort of disappointment.

Witty_Retort: To everybody talking about the WBC
He was excommunicated from them

Yeah, for being too NICE. Fred Phelps was too much of a bleeding heart for the Westboro Baptist Church. Let that percolate for a few minutes.

It wasn't even against the targets of their hate.  He called for being nicer to the fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

"Pastor Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. was excommunicated from the Westboro Baptist Church after advocating a kinder approach between church members. "
http://cjonline.com/news/2014-03-17/elders-excommunicate-phelps-afte r- power-struggle-call-kindness-within-church

cretinbob: Yeah, that was the amazing part.

Mikey1969: Yeah, that part of it blew me away, too. What the Fark is going on over there, I wonder?

Oh, it gets better. Keep in mind that WBC is very, very Calvinist in its doctrine. That means that they believe in predestination, that ∞ eons before He ever said, "Let there be light," God had already chosen whom He would save and whom He would damn, and that there's absolutely nothing that anyone can do about it. God doesn't condemn people for sinning. People sin because God condemned them and predestined them to sin so that He would have an excuse. As Phelps himself put it on his own "GodHatesF[nospam-﹫-backwards]sg*com" website, "God doesn't hate them because they're f@gs. They're f@gs because God hates them." He stated that that was a vitally important distinction.

Then, before he dies (and likely the cause of his death, since he was in deep depression over this and refusing food and water), he gets excommunicated from his own church.

So, what does that mean? It means that ∞ eons before God ever said "Let there be light," He knew that Fred Phelps was a damned sinner who would fall away from his Church. And what does that mean? It means that the Westboro Baptist Church was founded by a man whom God had damned from before the foundation of the world!

So, even by their own doctrine, they're wrong!

That being said I would not want anyone seeking "payback" to do anything to increase their suffering. That's playing their gamr and we should be better than that. What's funny about Phelps is that his interpretation of scripture isn't far off. It'd be nice if he was as outraged about blended fabric and the shrimping industry as he was about gay people. That way we can put the trope that the bible has some sort of "moral lessons" to bed once and for all.

The God who "hates" F_gs also hates the rest of us as well. He's infallible yet committed a global genocide because his "creation" wasn't behaving in a way that suited him. The Old Testament also says women should marry their rapists, and is full of awful tales of brutality.

Of course, these are the parts of the bible most modern Christian ignore, then pretend to be outraged at people like Phelps and his church, when the fact is that his God is your God as well, as uncomfortable as that may be.

Hating gays so much he protested the funerals of soldiers who were not gay, or children who were killed/died?  How does someone even come up with that?  Go protest a gay pride parade if you feel you must but really, why would anyone care that much to protest something that doesn't affect them, and do so at venues completely unrelated to what he was protesting?

That always confused me.

According to a VICE article he nearly died of a prescription drug overdose in 1968. He was rushed to the hospital Comatose and took a week to recover. He was amped up prescription methamphetamine in the morning and barbiturates at night. It was after that happened that his personality changed and he became the abusive jerk he became notorious for being. He nearly beat his son Nathan to death. He goaded one of his son's girlfriends to kill herself. He beat his kids daily.

By the time he died half of his 13 children were not speaking to him. The rest were in the throes of Stockholm syndrome. Even more of his grandchildren would not speak to him.

Ya'll vs. Y'all - A Texan's Anguish

There are only a few things in life that drive me absolutely nuts, and this is one of them. I've just read another book by an author who mangled the whole 'you all' contraction, and Lordy, do I feel a rant coming on. If one of your characters has any reason to speak Texan, or even Southern for that matter, this is vital information.

Before we start this discussion, you need to know that I'm no Grammar Girl. I loathe the comma. Semi-colons give me the willies. But I DO know with absolute certainty the correct way to contract 'you all'. (It's one of those things that's gifted to you when you're birthed in Texas, like knowing that dry rub has no place on a quality piece of meat. Don't go rubbing my brisket with that gritty stuff, babe...)

So here we go.

Let's start with the general idea. A contraction is simply a way to shorten two words into one by using an apostrophe to replace the missing letter (or letters) and the space between the words:

"I am" becomes "I'm" - the apostrophe replaces the 'a' in am

"she will" becomes "she'll" - the apostrophe replaces the 'wi' in will

See? It's ridiculously easy. So if I want to shorten 'you all' into one word, what would I do?

Some writers put the apostrophe AFTER the 'a', as in: ya'll. *shudders* Now tell me, does that make ANY sense given the law of contractions? No. It does not. The proper way to contract 'you all' is by using the apostrophe to replace the 'ou' in you and the space between the words, as in:

y'all

It's beautiful in its simplicity, don't you think? Boy, do I feel better, maybe even up to tackling a semi-colon or two. Thanks for letting me get that out of my system.

Fark_Guy_Rob: syrynxx: This is why religion is such a blight on the face of the Earth.  It gives people a sense of moral justification for hating others.  It gave Fred moral justification for hating gays.  It gives everyone else moral justification for hating Fred.

There is no god of any kind.  This guy is dead.  If you're still hating him after he is gone, perhaps fantasizing about some afterlife punishment, the only person suffering you.  Fred is fertilizer. Let it go and focus on the living.

You don't need religion to justify horrible things.  People are just as happy to commit atrocities in the name of 'family', 'country', 'politics', 'economics', 'race/ethnicity', 'greed' and a million other things.

Religion is a special type of retroviral justification. Family, country, politics, economics, race/ethnicity, greed, etc. all have concrete exemplars that can be seen and whose end-products are readily visible to anyone: money, family preservation, nationalism, power, etc. Religion takes an extra leap into belief whose end-products are invisible, unknowable by definition, and indistinguishable from the ravings of the mentally ill. And religion must be taught and reinforced by someone else who is infected. You don't need to be constantly told what country you live in or who your family is or that money is desirable, you can see all that for yourself. But a religious viewpoint needs to be communicated by other people in order for it to be the framework you build your life on. And commit atrocities for. It's a world-view based on nothing. Fark religion.

He is a monster that thrives on the innocence of others, the breaths of infants that are taken too soon sustain him. Every culture, living and dead, has known a Cheney. He lurks in the shadows, unassuming and unsuspected, until such time as the monster can take a new host and reveal himself.

This +1 was on your Daddy's wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured, put in a Vietnamese prison camp. He knew if the gooks ever saw the +1 it'd be confiscated, taken away. The way your Dad looked at it, that +1 was your birthright. He'd be damned if any slopes were gonna put their greasy yella hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something.

His ass.

Five long years, he wore this +1... up his ass. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the +1. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of +1 up my ass two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, Vacation Bible School, I give the +1 to you.

FYI, it's 'y'all', a contraction of 'you' and 'all'

'Ya'll' is a contraction of 'ya' and 'will', which makes no sense.

It's funny, they talked about this on A Way With Words recently, and the "ya'll" spelling is a correct spelling, the placement of the apostrophe kind of depends on where you're from. The "ya'll" is more a Texas/ southwest spelling than the "y'all."

That makes no sense. What's "ya" short for?

Fred Phelps approached the Pearly Gates, only to find Fred Rogers substituting for St. Peter.

Rogers took one look and said: "You will not be my neighbor."

Every funeral deserves to be a somber occasion for the loved ones of the departed to reflect and say goodbye to that person in their own way. Just because this family doesn't understand this doesn't mean inflicting such suffering on them will make them suddenly realize how sick it is. We're better than that.

The Bible says to treat others as you wish to be treated.

So, we must assume that he protested funerals because he wanted his own funeral to be protested.

Indeed. In fact, if we were to deny him that, we would be horrible people who did not want our own funereal desires to be observed.

We get to dance some today and tomorrow Felch is in the dustbin of history.

Boondock Saints, cult classic.

Avoid the sequel though.

I'd avoid the original, too

Speaking of queer folks and the people who love to hate us, "full cream in the mashed potatoes" sounds dirty.

Next sexy time I'm going to ask my boyfriend to use "full cream in the mashed potatoes."

for all of these "oh, let's be nice and feel bad, or not be mean, his family is bummed out", etc., ARE YOU FRICKIN SERIOUS WITH THAT?!?!?!?

These miserable bastards have wreaked UNTOLD misery, anguish and hatred on SOOOOOO many UNDESERVING families, individuals, etc. that they can and hopefully WILL rot in the deepest pits of hell.  I have NOT ONE IOTA of sympathy for ANYONE in that family who in ANY way, shape or form condones or otherwise complies / facilitates / ignores the truly loathsome, abhorrent actions of these sub-humans.  F them ALL.  Every last wretched one of them.

There is nothing better than a New Orleans drummer. I don't know how they fit so many farking strokes into one measure. Each count has a downbeat, upbeat, sidebeat, topbeat, bottombeat...stuffed full of everything.

hatred of hatred is not hatred

THIS IS WHY YOU TAKE PHILOSOPHY CLASSES, PEOPLE!

But it can be if it consumes you.

Which is why this thread is good and necessary. Farkers are releasing Fred Phelps and all his hateful shiat. We are venting it right out of our thoughts. The large majority (if not all) of the farkers in this thread will do nothing more in reference to Fred's life and death than post their feelings about it here.  When this thread closes, so does Fred's horrible, hateful existence. Good riddance.

I would classify, e.g., Hitler as a "monster" - I'm not sure how wide of an envelope the classification of "monster" includes, but I'm pretty sure, "Guy who waved some offensive signs at tasteless times/places," doesn't really  quite make the cut.

I would classify him as a "Highly-visible douchebag".

Jairzinho: I never celebrate the death of anyone, no matter how hateful, how evil, how much of human shiatty stain that person is/was. I may feel relieved knowing that a bad person is no longer around us to do more damage, but NOT HAPPY or joyful. That would put me at their level and I'd become what I hate of them.

There's nothing wrong with feeling unmitigated jubilation when a monster dies.  In all aspects of life there is balance - we feel sadness at their existence, so it then follows we feel gladness at their demise.
