Aerial shot of Fred Phelps grave in a year. I time traveled to get the shot.

SphericalTime: Ed Grubermann: SphericalTime: First, good.

Second, condolences to his family.

You do know who his family is, don't you?

Yes. That doesn't mean they can't be hurt by his passing. And some of them left the church and became advocates for gay rights, and for those ones, I hope they find peace.

Thing is, when my grandfather, one of the most bigoted and hate-filled men I've ever had the misfortune of meeting died, none of us were torn up about it. I've never seen so many feel so  little at the passing of a human life. As sad as it may sound, some people just aren't worth the grief.

I hope he has found God's mercy that he so withheld from others.  seriously, I do.

Fred was a disgusting display of humanity. He deserves scorn and nothing more.

Do we punish the families of other cult leaders? Do we torment them? Or should we recognize instead that they too are victims?

I guess there is no one out there too evil and hateful that someone won't white knight for them.

I've not defended him, merely called-out the droves of blithering hypocrites doing the same thing now that they're supposedly mad at Phelps for doing.

Umm congratulations? You are now better than everyone else. Which coincidentally, is exactly how Phelps felt about himself.

I don't feel it's hypocritical to be relieved that a man who did nothing but spewed hatred everywhere is unable to spew hatred now.

Stop responding to the troll, man.. it ain't worth it.

Fiction Fan: I usually don't believe in anything like a Hell.
But, if I *were* to believe in one, Fred is there.

I'd prefer to believe that Fred is in a custom-built Hell. Not one with fire and brimstone and rabid dogs, but more like the Castro: scantily-clad queens running amok through the hallways, yelling, "Bring it, sister!" and, "Oh no you di'int!" while waving huge rainbow flags and doing the YMCA on full repeat. And the entire place smells like a santorum smoothie, and everyone in the bathroom has a wide stance. And Fred is only allowed to wear leather S&M garb for eternity while the sisters rub up against him in the most carnal of ways.

Yes, that's his Hell, and I hope he's there. Even God would have a hand in making that carnival.

doubled99: If you have gone as far as copying and replying to a supposed "troll post", you can't logically rate it 0/10

Yeah... I've never understood this thinking. A half dozen replies giving a troll post a 0/10 is still a half dozen replies. Still a win.

It's not often that I do a chair dance when I learn of someone's passing.  This is one of those rare moment.

Last Man on Earth: I'd suggest that we celebrate the good that he did.  No, seriously.  He may not have intended it, but the backlash against WBC's insanity has probably done more to boost support for gay rights than any other single group.  People see the WBC, see the mentality homophobes have, and realize they want nothing to do with it.  So thank you, Fred Phelps.  Your absolute batshiattery and loathsomeness brought rational people everywhere closer together to fight for equal rights.

I agree. I know several people, including family members, who used to be very anti-gay until Phelps and team amped up their douchebaggery. Seeing the crazy on team WBC and after giving homosexuality the slightest amount of thought outside of "gross", they changed their minds on the matter.

RIP Fred Phelps - America's most effective gay rights activist!

2014-03-20 01:35:41 PM

madgonad: Fred was once a civil rights lawyer. It wasn't until the mid-1970s that something happened to change the man.

He was? I had no idea. What the hell happened that made him take a 180-degree turn, and to do so in such a public and irrational fashion? Hating gays so much he protested the funerals of soldiers who were not gay, or children who were killed/died?  How does someone even come up with that?  Go protest a gay pride parade if you feel you must but really, why would anyone care that much to protest something that doesn't affect them, and do so at venues completely unrelated to what he was protesting?

That always confused me.

Probably not, unless children accidentally saw you, or if intent for kids to see you was demonstrable.  In all likelihood you would be charged with indecent exposure, which is usually just a fine.  I say go for it, and if you get charged, for the love of all that is good and right please make sure you post the citation.

boyvoyeur: So, WBC picketed soldier's funerals because they died fighting for a country that was tolerant of gay people.

Did Fred ever pay taxes? Wouldn't that money go toward the tolerant country too? So, wasn't he funding gay tolerance?

Not saying it makes sense, just would love to hear WBC response.

He probably DIDN'T pay taxes because even hateful churches like his are tax-exampt.

To quote the all knowing Frank Zappa- "Tax the Churches!!! Tax the businesses owned by the churches!!!"

Except you are wrong.

Phelps hated people for how they were born. He caused pain on purpose and frequently with the intent to profit.

People who hate Fred hate him for what he does and how he hurt so many grieving people.

These two things are NOT equivalent and your charge or hypocrisy is badly reasoned.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: May his grave be forever drenched in urine.

I doubt there will be one.  he was disowned from his family.  who knows what the hell it takes for that to happen, it wasn't like there was some public statement from him recanting his life. my guess is that his ashes will just get dumped somewhere.  I disreputable crematorium operator could make a pretty penny by switching the ashes before handing them over...

I like that this happened on the first day of spring.  The snow in my yard is mostly gone and I'm planning on finding all the bleached, dessicated dog turds that were hidden and throw them into the trash, kind of like what the world did to that other rotted pile of fecal waste.

I'm not going to go dancing or pissing on his grave, but you can if you want to.  He deserved it.  He deserves all the hate and ire that he drew, he deserves to burn in hell (or rot in the ground forgotten).   Just because I won't, doesn't mean someone else shouldn't.

Having some conflicting emotions here.  I mean, I'm happy that the vehemence-spewing bigot is dead, but when I try to find a fark, I just can't seem to come up with one.

Anyway, carry on.  Thread is entertaining as hell (where he's roasting right now.)

God Hates Freds

While the weather may still be cold this, the first day of spring, the world is nonetheless slightly less unpleasant. When your life's work it to actively promote hate, don't be surprised when your family kicks you out of the church you started and you die nearly universally despised by the millions of people acquainted with your name.

2014-03-20 01:41:11 PM

Cybernetic: Felgraf: I'm gonna try to take Takei's stance on this, which was:

"I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding 'God Hates Freds' signs, tempting as it may be.
He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end."

That was very well said

Well, I think protesting his funeral would absolutely be stooping to his level, and while I'm not taking JOY in the fact that he's dead, I certainly don't think the world is any worse off, or that there is anything remotely to be sad about. Hopefully his death leads to a weakening and eventual disbanding of his "church" of pure hate.

One is hating others and celebrating their deaths due only to their sexuality, religious preference, or the fact that they served in the military, etc., regardless of what kind of person they were or how many lives they touched for the better.

The other is hating someone and celebrating his death because he was a horrible person who used his life to inflict as much pain and suffering onto others as he possibly could.

Not even remotely the same thing.

As a card carrying atheist, may he find the peace in death that he couldn't find in life.

And if there is a god... don't be too hard on him for never reading your book. It's a rather dry tome. You could've punched it up a bit with some car chases. Just wait till J.J. Abrams gets a shot at it.

Lens flare at the last supper... whaaaaat?

Actually, I mean the first part. Friends have called me the most christian atheist they ever knew. Nothing wrong with what the character "Jesus" said. It wasn't original, or unique but it's just how I roll.

Jairzinho: I never celebrate the death of anyone, no matter how hateful, how evil, how much of human shiatty stain that person is/was. I may feel relieved knowing that a bad person is no longer around us to do more damage, but NOT HAPPY or joyful. That would put me at their level and I'd become what I hate of them.

I did not celebrate the death of Bin Laden
I am not celebrating the death of Phelps
I will not celebrate the death of Cheney

/I'm not saying they're at the same. just evil in their own way.

Hitting a home run after missing 800 times does not automaticaaly put you on the same expert level as the guy who got home runs on all 801 pitches.

In other words, it is dishonest to think celebrating his death in any farking way equates a person to what Fred did in his life. This is not a 'Both sides are bad' issue.

You don't want to celebrate. That's perfectly fine and (sincerely) good on you. But don't think that you are as bad as him if you did celebrate.
