wumpus: They excommunicated him from the church before he died and I can't imagine anybody else wanting to take him. They'll cremate him and flush the ashes(I hope)

Maybe that dipshiat who took it upon herself to see the Boston Bomber got buried in Virginia will likewise take pity on poor Fred Phelps and get him buried next to the bomber.

Because that would be pretty convenient. You could take a dump on two miserable bastards' graves at once. Fun roadtrip!

The guy was misguided and full of hate.

But I am not.  So I hope that you finally realize your wrongs Mr. Phelps.

Felgraf: I'm gonna try to take Takei's stance on this, which was:

"I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding 'God Hates Freds' signs, tempting as it may be.
He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end."

That is a better response than I could come up with.

FTFA:  He was an Eagle Scout, ran track and graduated from high school at age 16.

No, he wasn't. Maybe he did. No, he didn't.

And the reason he didn't make it to West Point is because he was never selected to go there.

The interesting thing about dishonest people is that tend to be dishonest.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Nonetheless, I'm really not going to get along with anyone that enjoys the deaths of our troops.

OccamsWhiskers: Death is not something to celebrate

...

Bullshiat!  His death is the high point of his life.  It's the only thing to celebrate.

2014-03-20 01:04:44 PM
Ah yes, and now my facebook is lighting up with the jackasses who put on a their polite public face, saying shiat like "I hope he finds peace...", and "what a shame that someone lost their father" and "it is sad he didn't learn the error of his ways".

fark those people, too. There were soldiers who died who were fathers, sons, brothers, mothers, daughters, and this goddamn cancer didn't give a fark about any of that. When you get rid of a cancer in your body, you shouldn't have to put up with people giving you bullshiat lines like "aw, that's a shame, why couldn't you two find a way to live with each other peacefuly?". fark that. Phelps and his entire goddamn clan are a cancer. I hope it isn't long before the next is turned into worm food.

I guess his extended family needs to get some rest so that they will be fresh when they protest at his funeral. Surely they are going to, since they just excommunicated him for advocating kindness."

I must respectfully disagree. This man made it his life's work to hurt other people. By exploiting "loopholes" in our society we were not able to stop him despite a very broad consensus that he should stop. Now, we are free of him and his hateful acts and that IS something I will gladly celebrate.

But I also agree there is no reason to stoop to his level.

Well, as I said upon further reflection:  It may be *FAR TOO* easy for me to take the high road, as someone who was never directly targeted by the hateful bile he spewed.

And I certainly do not begrudge those that celebrate! I can absolutely understand it.  Especially those whose families his ilk tormented, or who were the objects of his attacks and hatred (For example, any non-hetrosexual or non-cisgendered person)

Sometimes I wonder, though, what it must have been like for him to go through life with that much hate bottled up inside him. I try to imagine it, and I just *recoil*.

/But, I am also an overly empathetic emotional marshmallow.

I wonder if the "church"... ne hate group, has some defectors now that the founder is dead.

Can't wait to see the satanist videos desecrating the gravesite. I won't participate, but I'll find a little joy in it.

But in 1979, the Kansas Supreme Court stripped him of his license to practice in state courts, concluding he'd made false statements in court documents and "showed little regard" for professional ethics.

Say what you like about him, but in a world full of sleazy lawyers, he was the Elvis.

There's not going to be a funeral to protest.

Have any of you seen the Loius Theroux docs "The Most Hated Family In America", and "The Most Hated Family In America: In Crisis"? They are both available in their entirety on YouTube. They really do a good job of letting the Phelps explain their psychosis  beliefs.

The good news is they are probably going to implode sooner than later. If Shirley is on the outs with them, as was suggested by Nathan, I think , she's going to take a few of them with her. Shirley seems to be their hardest worker and has been running things ever since Fred started losing his mind and his ability to manage the day to day stuff in the early 2000's.

I hope more people like Megan, Grace, Nathan, Libby, and Lauren leave the farkers. Those folks have really shown it's possible to change and to love instead of hate.

/Have had crush on Megan since she left WBC

red230: I'm calling it now. The Westboro Baptist Church is going to protest his funeral.

Seems as though he was excommunicated because he suggested members tone down the hate to others members. I have a feeling the family is more evil than him.

Grungehamster: I hope some idiots don't stage some sort of troll protest of his funeral.

Every funeral deserves to be a somber occasion for the loved ones of the departed to reflect and say goodbye to that person in their own way. Just because this family doesn't understand this doesn't mean inflicting such suffering on them will make them suddenly realize how sick it is. We're better than that.

The whole "I want to be the bigger person" stuff is for the weak.  I have no desire to be the bigger man or to be "better than that".  I hope people do protest his funeral.

Fred Phelps is dead and gay rights move forward.

The best thing anyone could do to celebrate his passing would be to simply attend his funeral and be very respectful to him and all in attendance.  Wear your rainbow lapel pin if you'd like or a red ribbon, but be respectful.
