Maybe, maybe not.  We're just speculating here, there's a lot of internet to fill and very little facts to fill it with.  By the way don't these baseless assumptions make Amercia look weak?

I hope they stay the fark out of there.

Little known fact: Moldova was named after Prince Drago's dog, Molda. It drowned in the river which now bears it's name, Moldava, after an aurochs hunt. (The same animals in The Beasts of the Southern Wild.)

And FARK Putin.

Another region that may-or-may-not predominantly WANT to be part of Russia.  And, if I understood the article right, there are already some Russian troops there, anyway?

Weird.

So another semi-autonomous region wants to join Russia and we are supposed to care why?

Oh, and for more information about the area, check out the BBC rundown on it. Sounds like it is a de facto independent country that wants to merge with Russia. Who the fark cares?

1980s foreign policy with the Soviets was nuclear deterrent.

2010 foreign policy with the Russians is economic sanctions.

Kind of different.

Unless you like little pockets of Russian troops scattered all over Eastern Europe.  It's amazing how many "de facto" countries happen to have Russian troops backing them up.

I just read about the problem that Russia has now: Ukraine owes Russia billions of dollars in debt- and they aren't going to pay it now that Russia has effectively stolen Ukrainian property.

Maybe they can rent the Crimea out to other countries to make up for the debt repayment loss?

Crimea is pretty poor and a lot of their money comes from tourism--quite a bit of which is from Eastern Ukrainians who are a lot less likely to vacation there now. And Moldova is dirt poor. Russia, which is kind of going broke itself, is going to flush itself down the toilet if it keeps on trying to add dependent states just for the swagger of it.

Putin has it all wrong. You don't conquer countries. You conquer their banking and economic sectors so that they can't sneeze without your permission. This survives coups, elections, revolutions .. just ask Egypt. Or most other nations in the world.

So far the only areas the Russians have 'annexed' were-

1.  Overwhelmingly ethnic Russian
2.  Were semi-autonomous already
3.  Had expressed a desire to become part of Russia

When Putin starts marching into independent, autonomous countries where the majority of the population has no desire to be part of Russia, then we can start getting our panties in a twist.

So you are saying that Russia putting troops in countries it plans to annex is exactly the same as the US putting troops in countries it liberalized?

Yeah, our 15,000 troops in Kuwait protect Kuwait.  Russia's troops in Crimea are there for Russia expansionism, empire-building, acquiring the land of a sovereign nation against their will by force.  We didn't do that in Kuwait in South Korea or any of those other places.  We are out of Iraq.  We are only in Japan and Germany because they attacked us (or our allies).

This moral equivalence you are making is tired.  And dangerous.

Just because Russia says these semi-autonomous regions want to join Russia, doesn't mean they actually do.

In Crimea, the reported percentage of people who voted for annexation with Russia was 95%.

We all know how the LGTB community is treated by Russians.  What percentage of Crimea do you think is LGTB?  10%?  15%?  So 100% of non-LGTB voted for secession AND 1/3 or 2/3 of the Crimean LGTB community voted for secession?  Is that what we are to believe?

Stop being so naive.  Russia is taking this land by force and intimidation.

It's not really bordering on Russia.  There's some concerns that they would say "fark it" and annex the entire Ukraine while they're at it.

Here's the interesting thing about the Crimean referendum.

The referendum actually wasn't between the choices of joining Russia or not joining Russia. The choice presented in the referendum was to either 1) Join Russia or 2) allow the Crimean parliament (which was being controlled by Russian forces) to decide whether to join Russia. The parliament previously said they would vote to join Russia.

There's also a 12% Crimean Tatar minority in Crimea who are vehemently opposed to joining Russia (since Russia basically took every single Crimean Tatar in 1944 and forced them to go to Siberia as collective punishment - only about 250,000 of the Crimean Tatars made it back).

Considering they're already starting to threaten to stop working with us regarding Iran and Nuclear Weapons, I'd say it's still about nuclear deterrant.

Moldova is a pretty pathetic country that shouldn't even exist anyway and Transnistria therefore is even sadder because it's a tiny sliver of land that pretends its still Soviet. I'm indifferent about this.

Since the 1950s the US has been involved in coups and regime change of more than 30 countries. Many times working to kill or depose of elected leaders only to then insert US friendly dictators with no regard to the citizens of these foreign nations. The US has done more evil in this world than the Soviets and Russians since WW2 ended.
