I've lusted after a Porsche 959 for almost 20 years. (read a car rag article about all the badass cars we couldn't have here and that was at the top of the list)

It was the most advanced Porsche at it's time and would still put many "modern sports cars" to shame.

AWD 3 Series wagon? If my Subaru wasn't already twice as awesome, I'd be all over that. Pretty car.

A Mercedes G-wagen?  WTF is new about that?  I've seen a number of old G-wagens in California over the years.  In fact, a few years ago I drove and considered buying one that some guy had for sale locally--an early 1980s 300GD (with a diesel engine, the same engine as in the 300D of that era)--but ultimately decided his price was more than I was willing to spend for it.

A friend of mine has a diesel, manual transmission, 525 touring in Dusseldorf. God I'd love to have that car here.

That Mercedes G Wagen looks pretty sweet.

2014-03-20 12:54:12 PM
Missing from that list: Nissan Skyline GTR

That said, those are some interesting cars (I love the Ozzie Falcon), but keep in mind that they can be problematic to drive on country roads. Passing a tractor on back road can be a problem if most of the car has to get into the oncoming lane before you can see if there's traffic coming the other way...

The rules in Canada allow the importation of any vehicle that is at least 15 years old leading to a recent flood of Japanese market imports, including many GTRs. My home province of Quebec, however, will no longer license right-hand drive cars because of the potential danger they represent on two-lane roads.

Also, new G-wagens have been available at Mercedes dealers for years.

At the time the 959 was one of the best sports cars ever made.  However it seems that most of its design and performance features eventually made their way into the "regular" 911.  Instead of $700,000 for a 959 you can get a new 911 Turbo for $150,00 with similar appearance, better aerodynamics, faster 0-60, same top speed, and probably same or better handling.

2014-03-20 01:15:55 PM
Oh man, if I could afford to import one, I'd LOVE to have a Lancia Delta... such a sweet ride.

2014-03-20 01:36:40 PM
I'll take a 1990 Mitsubishi Diamante 30R-SE, please. Four wheel drive, four wheel steering, active electronic control suspension, optional traction / trace control (first car in the world to have both), and a host of other electronic wizardry.

Japan's Car of the Year winner for 1991, and a complete underdog that nobody even knows about. And pretty styling too, albeit a bit of a BMW clone.

When Porsche was involved in F-1 the engineers had the running gear from a 959 put under a Vanagon.
They used it to run parts and people around.
Now, that's the vehicle that I want.
The top speed wasn't that great.
Quicker than any other van that you can think of and most cars too.

i drove my wife's 2008 328xi touring (6-spd) to work today. i love driving a wagon. while it isn't a subaru... it's certainly better in the snow than my RWD version.

Agree on the 959, disagree on the Lancias, kind of liked the Falcon. I will never be excited by a station wagon.

There was a dealer around here who made his business selling imports under the rule. Classic Minis, an Isetta, etc. At four grand for a Reliant Robin, however, he ended up going out of business.Still want an old Capri.
