Cdr.Murdock: I'll be the first to admit I hate that bridge. Driving it in a car isn't so bad, but in a pickup truck, I just see myself going in the drink if someone tags me, and I just don't trust most of the aersholes out there on the road today.One of the spans of the De. Memorial is like that too. like ZERO guardrail. The second span built (incidentally, I can see the Del Mem Br from my office window) has Jersey barriers on it. Same thing with the Walt Whitman Bridge (both were designed by the same engineer, and share many characteristics).The Ben Franklin bridge is a pleasure to cross. The girders shield the roadway, so if some dope tags you, you're not going in the river.It's not so much the idea of heights, it's the design of the span in conjunction with the traffic. Here, you had an individual who drives for a living (you would hope, a "professional") and he caused a crash that put someone in the drink.
Meatschool: Actually, the reason this happens isn't because Marylanders like to tailgate, it's that they like to cut people off. Let's say I'm Mr. Good Driver and I leave a nice gap between myself and the car in front of me. Some jackass is going to dive into that gap and slam on their brakes. Then when I rear-end that jackass, I'm cited for tailgating. It's happened. So to prevent that, you have to keep that gap too small to get a car into it, hence tailgating.
Scrotastic Method: BunkyBrewman: I never thought that area was bad.I grew up on the island on the east end of the bridge, so crossing was a daily occurrence. 90% of people are fine and treat it like the highway it is. But the rest are mortally terrified of it. Driving 30 mph, white knuckling the whole way. I know people that have lived their life in Queen Anne's County and have never crossed the bridge. If they need to get to the western shore they go up around the bay. It's inane.Plus there's no reason for the traffic. None. People see a highway cone or a flashing light and it's time to creep.
