DROxINxTHExWIND: Carn: DROxINxTHExWIND: I've got your "Do Not Tailgate" sign right here:

[encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com image 262x193]

/Seriously, stay off of my bumper.

Yeah, but you know around here that's just gonna make the person behind you rage out and try to run you off the road.

/why yes this did happen to me on 395
//going 5 over in wall to wall traffic in the right lane with no where to go just isn't good enough for some cockfaces

*Sigh*

Yes, I'm aware that it will probably go badly. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I'm as crazy as they are so it doesn't shock me.

/I'm trying to cool it behind the wheel
//Got flipped off this morning and smiled, so I'm doing better
///Pray for me

I don't have any good advice honestly.  I used to rage pretty hard but I'm actually an extremely patient driver now (although I did flip somebody off in a parking lot last month, but their asshattery was epic), and the thing that really made me change was my first job here was as a delivery driver.  You think people are trying to hit you now, try driving a giant van around.  I spent the whole time hyper-aware trying to keep people from hitting me and farking up the cargo that now when I'm driving a car I can shrug off all but the most egregious dick moves.  I find it also helps to make fun of them.  Like when somebody tailgates you when you're not on the left and you're like "WTF" then they floor it to go in the left lane only to be stuck because traffic is moving at the same speed I go "vroooooooooom vrooooooooooooooom"!  Also when I'm waiting for a spot to open so I can change lanes I'll flip on my turn signal then cheer on the car behind the open spot.  "Block the gap!  Block the gap!  You can do it!  YEAH!  Way to go, dumbass!".  Or the merge tards or whatever.

I also hate the suicide lane on this bridge. There is an EZ Pass only lane (or there was last summer) all the way to the right that will let you avoid the suicide lane.

Cdr.Murdock: Not a fan of the Tydings bridge either.  Sometimes, when I'm going to Havre de Grace I'll get off the highway and go down to the RT 40 bridge.  Much more to my liking.

Havre de Grace has some nice antique shops.  Made a few additions to my neon beer sign collection down there.

If memory serves, there's a nice bar that used to be a bank in town has a decent view of the water and good food.  It's down the street from a pawn shop.

And who DOESN'T like a pawn shop?

The Hatem is much nicer since they've re-surfaced it. If you travel over it more then 3-4 times a year, you can add on a $20 charge to your MD EZ-Pass (or get a Hatem specific EZ-Pass) that gives you unlimited passes for a year. Be warned they plan to remove the toll takers in the future so the cash only cost is going up to $12 ($8 plus a $4 video toll surcharge, they mail you a bill for the toll.)

I think the bar you're referring to is MacGregors. Coakley's a block up has decent food also.

Inflatable Rhetoric: eyemarten: Oh, a sign. Well, that"ll work. People always obey sings.

Depends on what they're singing, I think.

Heh. I apologise.

I wrote that while in the DMV. Everyone knows that just setting foot in the DMV raises the blood pressure and makes it hard to write coherently.

Znuh: It's a shiat bridge. I'll say that again, it's. a. shiat. bridge.

They're always doing construction. Always. It's poorly designed. When the 'main span' is closed, the other side, which is just two lanes, switches to oncoming traffic mode.

Whoever thought that having a narrow, two lane bridge with ONCOMING TRAFFIC in the other lane was an acceptable solution should be shot. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And heading east, you get the further kick in the balls of a $6 toll.

The design is fine...who knew in 1950 that the DC, Baltimore, Ft. Meade, and Annapolis suburbs were going to extend out past Queenstown?

There are many bridges with oncoming traffic in the lane to your left, and some of those even cost a lot more than $6. For example:

The Irresponsible Captain: Solution:

[carlistmy-blogcdn.s3.amazonaws.com image 575x348]

Mandate it and include early braking in anticipation of accidents. No matter how hard you hit that skinny pedal it won't let you get too close. Require it to be retrofit on commercial vehicles.

Or you can just install a couple of cameras and announce you are going to mail them tickets until people learn to put adequate spacing.

No need to mandate people buy things and install them.

No tickets unless there is video evidence to prove someone didnt just pull in front of you 1/2 second before the picture was taken...etc.

No lane changes allowed on the bridge.

danno_to_infinity: Why the fark was she doing only 4 mph?  We can't even get people to drive less than 15 mph in parking lots around here, hell, they're doing at least 25-30 like they were on a surface road.

Traffic jams, how do they work?

Moved down here from New England to help out my parents. The drivers in the tri-state area (PA/VA/DC/MD) make Massholes look like surgeons. Innate driver idiocy + stupidly designed bridge = people dying. Last year a teenager was texting, drifted into the oncoming traffic lane in front of a truck.

Trucker swerved to avoid her, successfully missed her and went over the bridge to his death.

It's a giant satanic prayerwheel of suck.

In defense of the bridge, it was built in 1952, then upgraded in 1973. it's woefully outdated by todays standards obviously, but when it was first built, it was god send to the residents of the DelMarVa. there are documentries about how it improved the standard of living out there.
and of course, traffic FORTY YEARS AGO was nothing like it is now.

that it hasn't been upgraded, or replaced by now is more of a failing on the state of Maryland.

Meatschool: Actually, the reason this happens isn't because Marylanders like to tailgate, it's that they like to cut people off. Let's say I'm Mr. Good Driver and I leave a nice gap between myself and the car in front of me. Some jackass is going to dive into that gap and slam on their brakes. Then when I rear-end that jackass, I'm cited for tailgating. It's happened. So to prevent that, you have to keep that gap too small to get a car into it, hence tailgating.

OR... you leave sufficient following distance and when someone jumps in front of you, just let off the accelerator and let the distance build up again. And even in that case, a critically short following distance doesn't occur. I find that to be a lot safer and lower stress rather than raging impotently and tailgating the car in front of me or the clown who just jumped in front of me.

As long as I keep making progress in the right direction, I'll take it.

There's a myth that if you let people in, that you'll somehow grind to a stop but in reality that doesn't EVER happen.

A half million in signage on that bridge is a generic name self adhesive bandage from the everythingferaollar store repair/upgrade.

it's an insult really..

and this is coming from a guy in Virginia that has crossed over that bridge maybe twice in his forty years on this planet.

Meatschool: Scrotastic Method: BunkyBrewman: I never thought that area was bad.

I grew up on the island on the east end of the bridge, so crossing was a daily occurrence. 90% of people are fine and treat it like the highway it is. But the rest are mortally terrified of it. Driving 30 mph, white knuckling the whole way. I know people that have lived their life in Queen Anne's County and have never crossed the bridge. If they need to get to the western shore they go up around the bay. It's inane.

Plus there's no reason for the traffic. None. People see a highway cone or a flashing light and it's time to creep. That bridge is maddening. So glad to be far, far away.

Prank Call of Cthulhu: Trying to get Maryland drivers not to tailgate? Good luck with that. Might as well try to convince birds not to fly.

You sound slow.

See, Maryland? You took down all those "Please drive gently" signs at the state line, and see what happened?

Deucednuisance: Cdr.Murdock: I'll be the first to admit I hate that bridge.  Driving it in a car isn't so bad, but in a pickup truck, I just see myself going in the drink if someone tags me, and I just don't trust most of the aersholes out there on the road today.

One of the spans of the De. Memorial is like that too.  like ZERO guardrail.  The second span built (incidentally, I can see the Del Mem Br from my office window) has Jersey barriers on it.  Same thing with the Walt Whitman Bridge (both were designed by the same engineer, and share many characteristics).

The Ben Franklin bridge is a pleasure to cross.  The girders shield the roadway, so if some dope tags you, you're not going in the river.

It's not so much the idea of heights, it's the design of the span in conjunction with the traffic.  Here, you had an individual who drives for a living (you would hope, a "professional") and he caused a crash that put someone in the drink.

I'll bet you'd just love the Harry W. Nice bridge!  (Rte 301, crosses the Potomac between MD and VA).  I'm not bridge-phobic (unlike my sister, who will cringe down to the floorboards if she's not driving) but that bridge gives me the Willies.

[soupisnotafingerfood.files.wordpress.com image 228x136]

Narrow lanes, no shoulder at all, just jersey barriers and a lovely view of the waters to either side.

And just for emphasis:

[cdn.blogs.fredericksburg.com image 797x374]

Used to drive it everyday, I have no problem but people who don't like bridges hate the Nice Bridge.

2014-03-21 08:43:35 AM
I hate the bridge, but I am not willing to spend the extra time going around. We go camping at Assateague every fall. Last year we bought a camping trailer. I was a wreck going across the bridge. I kept imagining a sudden gust of wind just firing us over the edge. Also, with a 2 axle trailer, I had to pay $18 to cross the bridge. Also, all the people saying they get stuck in the lane with two way traffic, just go to the right. There are EZ pass lanes over there. Not as fast as the dedicated EZ pass lane on the left, but no chance of ending up on the extra scary death lane. Of course, I always make sure I am not crossing at peak hours either. I try to cross on a weekday in the late morning or early afternoon.

Cerebral Knievel: BunkyBrewman: I never thought that area was bad.  The two tunnels though.. they scare the shiat out of me when I drive on through the bay bridge.  Every scenario possible seems to go through my brain during the short time you're underwater.  "Why isn't that guy going at least 45?"  "What the hell happens if an accident occurs"  "Oh shiat, is that water I see leaking from the walls"  And then.. daylight.  *whew*

the bridge in the article is the bay bridge in Maryland, it has no tunnels.

but I agree with you about the Bay bridgŧunnel. My biggest issue with it is that for the tunnels, the funnel four lanes of traffic down to two lanes (one going either direction) for the tunnels.

of course, the bridge was a hundred times more freaky before they expanded it, why they didnt build two more tunnels is beyond me.

Thanks.  I thought it was talking about the bridge-tunnel.  I was wondering where that accident happened when we drive to the OBX.
