If you plant a red delicious apple seed you don't get a red delicious apple tree.  You probably get an apple that tastes like ass.

We had a tree in the back yard, an old wild apple tree. My dad and I grafted all sorts of type of apples on it, and just for fun, a couple of peach, pear, and cherry branches. After a few years, it was always fun to have people try to identify WTF was going on with it.

Hell, domesticated apples aren't even pure apple -- there's a fair amount of crabapple running in their genetics. Wild apples are more grapefruit-sized.

I will be glad when there's American cider on the market made from proper cider apples, that tastes like West Country cider instead of spiked fresh apple juice. About the only stuff I like is imported Blackthorn from England. I'm growing four heritage-variety apple trees in my backyard, though; plan to make my own when they're bearing.

No, it's actually possible, if you graft a sapling of one onto a sapling off the other. In Ada, OK there stands a pecan tree that drops seven different types of pecans. Just some hillbilly Dr. Frankenstein who had way too much time on his hands grafted them all together.

That's not how scions work. If you graft a Red Delicious branch onto any other kind of apple tree, it will bear only Red Delicious. Chimera apples like this are just a common mutation. What happened was, either this tree came up from seed, or more likely a branch native to the root stock was allowed to grow and bear (unlike the grafted-on scions that are how all commercial apples are propagated).

Pink Lady apples are terrible too, but I dislike sweet stuff, and they're super sweet.  If they tasted like pink lemonade, but had an apple texture, I would have eaten enough apples to give me diabeetus though, so I guess i can't be upset that they don't.
