Clear Channel, now owned by Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital, is said to be $21 billion in debt

It would be nice to think that Clear Channel would be broken up and sold but it's just going to get folded into a larger media company.

But if they're owned by Bain Capital, how can they be in debt? Aren't those expense management fees catapulting them into the black?

We really pooched it by letting Clear Channel become the monster it is today.

There were good reasons we didn't let conglomerates own multiple stations.  Music is almost completely irrelevant today.

We can thank this asshole for a big chunk of that.

I bet they have binders full of advertisers wanting to project their logos into the mist that virtually nobody will see.

Missing the point. It's a sales gimmick.

Guy from Duff's Beer gets off the elevator to have a meeting with ass-kissing sales reps, and Duff Beer logo shines through the mist to show how much they want to kiss his ass.

Wait, hear me out - the mist would be a perfect metaphor. With 21 billion in debt, the company's prospects are hazy, and the outlook is dim.

On the flip-side of that, they have enough assets and revenue to qualify for and take on $21 billion in debt.

Cost to build a "tunnel" vs. a hallway...  minimal.
Cost to produce mist, vs. not do so...  also minimal.

Failure to be outraged is complete.

I sort of expected something more like a air cleaning effect, not stupid advertising.

If I were a media buyer I'd be asking "So, how do I buy the first commercial in one of your 8 minute ad blocks. I'd like to be the last thing a listener hears before they turn off their radio and rips the knob off."

Farty McPooPants: Music is almost completely irrelevant today.

As opposed to when?

There has always been plenty of crap on the radio. For every Beatles song on the radio in '64 you'd have had to sit through a bunch of swill from the likes of The Singing Nun, Bobby Vinton, etc. You can do this with just about every era of music. The late 70's were particularly horrible. If you were outside of the FM signal of a kickass big-city station, chances are you weren't going to hear anything good. Out in the sticks where I grew up, I only had AM radio (off my lawn!) for the first part of my childhood and never heard of Led Zeppelin until 1975 or so. Stations could make money just fine by playing elevator music, so that's what they did.

The problem with conglomerates is that they killed off the good local owners, and overleveraged themselves in the process. They killed off the bad local owners too, but all that means is that the bad stations were elevated to boring, safe mediocrity.

Oh, and as for the mist tunnel? That won't cause a mold problem at all down the road.

Gad, what a farking tool that guy is.

Shouldn't bullshiating ad men be offended when cheesy promotion techniques are used to try to influence them? Hell, they're trade show faire. If you go to any trade shows they're old news.

FTFA: "As you walk through the mist, you hear directed speakers playing Clear Channel stations across the country," a source told Del Colliano.

So it's the sound of 850 radio stations simultaneously playing "Lawyers in Love" on rotation once every hour?

I guess the mist is symbolic of the tears of people who remember when radio was worth listening to.
