The statue is plastered in graffiti. You think if it meant that much they'd actually maintain it. I could maybe see how someone would interpret that as the piece not having any importance or value, and that it was okay to get a little more hands on.

It's not the statue plastered with graffiti but the wood plinth upon which it sits. The museum probably didn't have enough money left over to get a good, non-graffiti'd plinth since they were swindled on the knockoff Greco-Roman statue

That's not vandalism. It's been firmly established that graffiti is art and we should let people paint and draw whatever they want on any surface.
