I watched Episodes 2 and 3 of the prequels with my kid last week. If you cut out all the scenes with Anakin and Padme talking, the movies aren't half bad. But you put those two morons in a room together and the movies come to a screeching halt.

I feel the same way. I can't blame them, though. Few actors could make that corny dialogue work, especially with Lucas's hamfisted directing.

Lucas should be legally barred from directing.

That's practically the same time since they were released, so the original cast could be in it. Time for Carrie to get her metal bikini out of storage.

While it's cool that we are getting new Star Wars movies with the original characters and all again, I'm also pissed that these new films will completely negate the whole Expanded Universe that I grew up reading. On one hand I can understand their reasoning. Not everyone has read the hundreds of Star Wars books that are out there (Hell, even I haven't and I'm a HUGE fan). Plus if the story takes place thirty years after  Jedi, that would put it at about the time of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Which would be a cool story line to adapt...

I just don't have high hopes when I saw rumors about one of the characters being Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter...

So there is a possiblity of having the Solo kids and Ben show up... That is actually neat assuming they do it right. And do not KILL CHEWIE!!!!

As insufferable as it was, I've always thought the cheesy romantic dialogue between Anakin and Padme was spot on. That's how teenagers in love actually sound . . . because they are overly dramatic idiots.

The biggest problem with the prequels is Lucas completely failed to account for the fact his audience grew up. Then he saturated what everyone thought was going to be a darker storyline with kid/teen stuff and pod racing.

Or he saw a new generation of toy consumers and wrote story lines around merchandising opportunities.

somedude210: so...the Thrawn series?

Can't. That takes place five years after Jedi and unless they do what they did to Jeff Bridges for Tron: Legacy, it's not going to happen.

Star Wars: First location shot was nine minutes in. All the others were visual effects and studio shots.
Empire: Three minutes in with Luke noticing the probe droid landing.
Jedi: Five minutes in with Artoo and Threepio walking to Jabba's palace.

TPM: Eight minutes in, Palace of Theed (actual location)
AotC: Thirty-seven minutes in. Everything before that were indoor sets and bluescreen.
RotS: None. This one was filmed all indoors.

That's kind of a two-way street, though. I forgave some stuff he did to appeal to kids because the original three did that. Somehow, he lost the ability to create characters we could get emotionally invested in. I think a large part of that was Lucas got too focused on the visual effects and just couldn't figure out how to execute telling what could be a great story in this wonderful universe he created. It's pure hubris. I have a documentary that came with my VHS deluxe boxed set and in it, Lucas says he passed off directing Empire and Jedi because he thought he could build a better film in the editing room with pieces given to him than he could doing it all on his own. Too bad he didn't subscribe to that with the prequels.

I havent checked all the forums yet, but this puts it right in the middle of the big novels just before the second galactic civil war

That would mean Ben Skywalker and Jacen Solo are your two main characters.

I wonder if they are going to cast and introduce Mara Jade? That would explain a lot

It took them dropping a moon on him, yes. But it was one of those, "we can save him! We got him! No, we lost him and cant go back for him!" moments. Which lead to one of the Solo kids pissed at his dad.

And what "facts" are those? You are basing "facts" on something that has had NO release info. We have no idea who the characters are. No one except R2 has been confirmed. We are thinking that Luke, Leia and Han are coming back but they are not confirmed. The only thing we know is its set 30 years after RotJ. So tell me, with that little info, how can you base your facts and came to the conclusion that its going to suck.

People like you piss me off so much. You are what cause good movies to be over looked pre release. How about this, instead of saying its going to suck year(s) before the movie is due out. You wait and see it then tell people your honest opinion.

/Will be seeing this opening night.

The EU canon is not official canon. Disney has already informed the fanbase that they are reviewing the EU canon and will keep only what they want to incorporate into the officual canon.

Ack, read that wrong. Yeah, it looks like the original trilogy had less than a year of principal shooting before the films were released, while the prequels had a couple years. I'm assuming this is all because of how easy it is to insert CGI effects into the flicks now, so that 3 years of preproduction-to-release is back down to less than two years, llike it was in the 70s.

Seriously, a smart engineer would have designed the lightsaber to turn itself off and on 100 times a second, and make it much longer. The blade is virtually weightless anyways, so it's not like balance is an issue.

I used to watch the original trilogy about once a year. I haven't done that for about five years now. So that should indicate how likely I am to watch a new one.

Why? The first three weren't masterful cinema. They were good basic adventure stories with a lot of likeable characters and great special effects (for the time). This is something Disney can do well.
