Not much of an April Fool joke if they announce it ahead of time.

For Ferguson's part, he will be only the fourth person to host The Price Is Right (Carey, Bob Barker and Dennis James are the others).

Wow. Bill Cullen, Tom Kennedy and Doug Davidson will be sorry to hear that.

It's CBS. You can't get the jump on their audience, their hearts can't take it.

Typical someone under 30 piss poor reporting and researching right there.... especially somehow pulling Dennis James out of the hat.

Now, what they might have meant, but, were not specific enough about it, was meaning the "daytime revival" of the Price is Right (starting in 1972 on CBS), which if you limit it to that, is probably true.     Cullen was on the NBC/ABC version only, Kennedy & Davidson only did syndicated versions.

Bill Cullen hosted it on NBC and ABC and the show was quite different than the later incarnations.  Tom Kennedy and Doug Davidson hosted the syndicated versions.  James, Barker and Carey have hosted the currently running CBS version though James also hosted a syndicated version after Barker took over the daytime version once he was done with Truth or Consequences.

Yes, technically they would be right for the daytime version only, since as you said... Barker and Carey are the two regular hosts, and IIRC, Dennis James did a day's taping when Bob was out sick, since he was already doing the original '70s nighttime syndicated version.

But they should have mentioned that they were talking about the daytime version only.

You are pretty much correct.

Bill Cullen hosted the original Price Is Right throughout the 50s and 60s on both ABC and NBC.  When the series was revived as The New Price Is Right in 1972, there was a daytime version and a once per week, syndicated nighttime version (which was a common practice with game shows in the 1970s).  Barker was going to host both, but there was some rule about hosting more than one syndicated program at a time (Barker also hosted Truth or Consequences), so Dennis James (who was Mark Goodson's original pick to host both versions) was slotted for the nighttime spot.  When Barker stopped T or C in 1978 or so, James was let go and Barker hosted the nighttime show until it ended in 1980.

And yes, James did host a week of the daytime shows when Bob was out sick; I believe this was in 1973 or 1974.

A new nighttime, syndicated version airing five nights per week came about in 1985 with Tom Kennedy as host, and lasted one year. After Mark Goodson died, his significantly less talented son Jonathan Goodson attempted another nighttime syndicated version, a version that rapidly departed from the look and premise of the original show, in 1994 with soap opera star Doug Davidson as host. It too lasted only one year.

While I'm sure the Price is Right will be better with Ferguson, he's getting entirely too popular to be my favorite, under-appreciated late night host.

True, but on the other hand, I haven't watched a Price is Right in years and now I know to record it instead of hearing about it after the fact.

Late late show will be taped day-of.

Ferguson tweeted something the other day about the cat being out of the bag so they might as well promote it, so I'm gathering it was supposed to be a surprise. How you keep that secret when you have two studio audiences full of people with social media at their fingertips, I don't know. But it's not like they could have done this live, so it was probably inevitable.

Besides, just because they did this for Fool's Day doesn't mean it has to be a surprise.

I'd swear Craig was joking about this very situation a couple weeks back.  I wonder if that's what made it happen.  I don't watch, but I won't miss this.
