For those who have heard about this, this is my view as I walked about 200 meters out the door of my work. A coworker witnessed the crash and was pretty shook up later as he realized that he had just witnessed at least 2 people dying.

Another one was taking video when a guy on fire ran from one of the cars. This was like 3 minutes after the crash and no one had any clue that A) someone was still in one of the cars at that point, or B) how that motherfarker lived though that as long as he did. Apparently he has 2nd & 3rd degree burns over like 20% of his body but he should make it (my coworker does not want that video shared online, for what I consider to be good reason).

Anyway - crazy morning in my work neighborhood.

hundreddollarman: Damn, that's just terrible. :(

Thanks bud, it was pretty nasty.

Yeah this turned into a very surreal day. That start was enough to get tongues wagging everywhere already, and then our CEO (I work for the state ferry system) tendered his resignation, effective April 15. That hit the newspapers too. Reporters everywhere, for two different things, talking to different people about both issues - just nuts.

Finally chilled later but by then most of us were just numb - I know I was. I had to put on my headphones, compartmentalize, and do some work. Downloading thoughts of the day now.

Looking out your office window and seeing your co-worker's helicopter in flames is horrifying enough. But how'd you like to be the news director ordering someone to go cover it for the noon broadcast?

The only day this week it's not raining in Seattle and helicopters fall from the sky.

I would like to talk about something serious for a minute.  I think we owe  my lip balm addiction a debt of gratitude.  Not for videotaping such a horrendous scene of carnage and devastation, no.  We're all Google-savvy enough to find stuff like that whenever we wish.  What we do need to do, however, is that we all need to stop and applaud this TFer for having the decency and wit about him to remember to record this in landscape instead of submitting to the urge to videotape in portrait.  Well done, sir.  Well done indeed.

Terrible story. I couldn't take my eyes off Newman playing the cop.

Two things.

1. Why are all those fire trucks not being used to, I dunno...put out the fire(s)?
2. That cop is REALLY fat.

Trust me dude - I never would have heard the end of the biatching. First thing I did with my Nexus 5 was PUT THE THING IN LANDSCAPE!!

As far as I can tell, since everyone was out of the vehicles at that point, they were more concerned with overall safety and containment. As I said upthread, my coworkers next to me were like "where's the water" but in hindsight, they were dealing with a wounded burning man on the ground, throwing down containment, and stopping the fire at the far end from going into the storm drains (where it could have combusted other gases in an underground explosion. They were plenty busy.

And yes, fat cop is fat.  :)

No one was roasting. Just a carBQ. And you would need to find a way to remind footage from inside my coworkers brain to get footage of the bird actually going down.

While I would normal say 'Me, too.' in this case why?

Why the FARK aren't they trying to put out the fire and yes, that cop was fat as in 'FAT!' As in 'Fatty McFatFat' fat. How does he stay on the force being so grossly over weight?

And subby?
'600 meters'? Really? When did Washington state start using the metric system?

I think everyone at KOMO needs a few days of vacation to grasp what happened. It was surreal listening to KOMO radio online and watching the KOMO TV stream. I could never imagine what it must've been like witnessing that happening in real time.

You know Canada is right up the road, and it's REALLY not that difficult to grasp the concept of 1 metre = 39 inches?

Fire Dept in that area on strike?

2014-03-19 02:03:22 AM
I remember working in Torrance, CA in 2001 and a woman jumped from the top of our 10 story building.

They shut everything down. Naturally, my boss was out that morning and when he came back to the entire building being shut down, he assumed it was something I did.

It was a woman with two kids. She was apparently in a custody battle with her ex and decided to take the quick route out.

I'm still bummed out about it.

John Buck 41:  1. Why are all those fire trucks not being used to, I dunno...put out the fire(s)?

Probably because they aren't carrying foam. Short of making some steam and spreading the fire everywhere, spraying water on it won't do much.

Good. We don't need any more "Bernie" videos than are already out there.

My condolences to the dead, the wounded and the shell shocked.

Most trucks that size have a foam tank for just this, however if the fire was in a safe spot they would let it burn out versus spraying messy foam in down town Seattle washing any unburned gas/oil in to the drainage system. Yes it's not ideal, but its the most safe.

Not as bad as the guy who says "why do i have to drove all the way out there for a car fire, have the chopper swing by!"...
