So it's okay to pay $700+ for an easy-to-lose device that'll only get around 18-24 months of use?

At least the PS3 lasted almost a decade.

Why only 18-24 months? Most of my Apple devices have lasted over 5 years. I have an iPhone 5, it's 24 months old, and going strong

Price it versus a 423 PPI, 2 gb of ram, 32 gigs of storage, 1080 60 fps camcorder, quad core LG G2.

Apple hardware is a joke. It should be a 350 dollar phone but it has an apple on the back. I guess that's worth a couple hundred for that.

You sound like an American automaker. This Buick has a v8, a Benz gas a v8, therefore a Buick is as good as a Benz.

I'm not saying that an Apple device is of a far superior quality than say a Samsung. But I'm also not trying to justify my purchase of Apple devices to you. I am, like many people, completely happy with my iDevices.

Yeah, they might have convinced you that is the case, but before I got my wife a 5c, she was still on a 3GS. The iPad 2 we have is still going strong 3 years now.. Put it in a case, and it will last forever.

I lost my old pay-as-you-go flip phone a few months back, and replaced it with an iPhone 5C (eh, they were on sale for $45). There's no way in hell I'd put my personal, important info (banking, email, etc.) on an easily lose-able device like so many do.

/I did find the flip phone after two months. The only valuable info on it was a few phone numbers I hadn't bothered to write down.

What? How in the he'll do you get a v8 is a v8 out of real stats, unless you think things like RAM, storage, and higher PPI are meaningless.

If anything, it'd be comparing a Benz to a Royce. A fast, well made car versus one that's decently made but doesn't really perform that well and is priced well over what it actually costs solely due to name.

1. Was the writer suffering from a St. Patrick's Day hangover when he wrote this?

2. Since iPhones seem to be more expensive in the U.K. (a 16GB 5c sells for $600 off contract), a quick and dirty comparison to the HTC One does illustrate its disadvantageous (smaller screen, less storage, etc). However, iOS can run many more apps and games than Android, and from what I've seen the iPhone has a pretty sweet display - if not the biggest.

Because you can get a Nexus 5 for $350, which beats the iPhone 5C like a rented mule in almost every conceivable way. And if you don't mind Windows Phone, the Lumia 925 for T-Mo is $270 no contract at Newegg. There's just a crapload of nice options that are better phones overall than the 5C.

I've never understood the idea of a used phone.

My best friend worked at a phone repair shop. I've seen what people do to/with phones. Smokers have the worst. The device will be tarred and impossible to clean. Every iPhone that comes in, usually comes with a cracked screen. Water damage. Most have them repaired to sell, coming to repair shops with phones in such a state that, if it were a car, it'd be totaled.

People don't want lemon cars. I don't want lemon phones.

There's a reason mobile phones have resale value. Phones are much easier to lose than cars, and much harder for police to locate. Just like cars, phones (and computers, tablets, etc.) have a higher resale value if they're well taken care of. Not everyone is super clumsy or smells like an ashtray.

Let's say you bought an iPhone 5 for "$300" or whatever while signing up for two years of The Phone Company's expensive plan. After you lose your phone you're still on contract, and buying a new one of the same model may be out of your budget.

That's not a made-up example -- the last two people I've sold my used phones to had the same story.

I can vouch for that sort of. Before I transferred my personal cell to VOIP and switched over to my company cell, I cashed in my member points for a cheapie non-smart phone, intending to flip it. Posted it for $40 to Craigslist, had 5 replies within 20 minutes.

I have an HTC One and it's the best thing ever. The iPhone is fine if that's what floats your boat, but I think the screen on it is way too small. My previous phone was an HTC Vivid, I had it for about two years and it still works great, I still use it as a little tablet sometimes.

It's a way to try and quantify a qualitative experience, assuming that RAM, storage and PPI are indicative of what your user experience is. I've used both, and while there is alot I like about Android now, there is more that I like about iOS.

And at this point, I have alot invested in app purchases that unless Apple took a big dump on me, I probably wouldn't change.

I never understood that line.  How many paid apps did you buy?  I have 3 maybe 5 paid apps on Android platform and maybe 2 on WP platform and neither of those items would force me to stay on one platform if there is an obvious better device.   Who are these people that go around paying for apps?

To me the idevices are garbage until they make a bigger screen.  My smartphone that came out 3 years before the 5c has the same screen size.

Majority of people upgrade every 2 years so it's not always a minimal upgrade unless you are updating yearly which there are very few people that do this.  Kind of why the AT&T Next plan is stupid unless you have a lot of disposible income and want the latest and greatest every year.

It's a pretty minimal upgrade regardless. A smart phone is a smart phone, all are capable of surfing the web, checking email, playing some games, and taking a bad picture. The idea you need more than that already incredible amount of functionality is the very basis of consumerism.

My last 2 smartphones have been a Samsung Focus--- Samsung S3 (current) ----- next will be Note 4.  So you are telling me those upgrades are all minimal?  If you are talking about the iPhones then yes even their 2 years are very similar.
