What the hell does the White House need with a pastry chef anyway?  I wouldn't mind seeing a lot of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Presidency go away.

Mentat: What the hell does the White House need with a pastry chef anyway?  I wouldn't mind seeing a lot of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Presidency go away.

• he was hired by laura bush
• michelle obama had him use healthy ingredients and smaller portions
• he's leaving to spend more time with his husband
• he will be advocating for healthier foods.

Mr. Yosses began experimenting with alternatives to what he called "the usual blitzkrieg" of butter and cream. Now, he said, "we replace butter with fruit purée, which gives some body." He often uses honey and agave in place of sugar, has added whole grains to desserts and is considering heirloom varieties of whole wheat without the bitterness of wheat bran and germ in modern whole-wheat flour.

question: is the sun times a rightwing paper? that "article" was written as if he was storming off because michelle obama demonizes butter and cream.

here's an unbiased version that actually quotes the chef in question from the NY times.

if you winguts are being lied to in a story about a pastry chef... just imagine what breitbart and the daily caller are lying to you about regarding benghazi, crimea, the ACA or any number of other issues.

Baking and pastries are basically a specialty line of work for chefs. It's very exacting and requires enormous patience and attention to detail. For all the hosting done at the White House, it is totally appropriate for them to have a pastry chef. Many fine restaurants have their own baking and pastry chefs. Most that don't will be getting the bulk of their baked goods and desserts from an outside supplier.

I fully expect people that were consumed with rage that we didn't serve Lunchables and orange juice from concentrate at the state dinner for Francois Hollande to be in this thread decrying the White House for not being able to keep in-house pastry chefs.

There is a reason why we only eat them in moderation.

This is literally the first time ever they've been wrong about anything. Not that they are wrong. Actually, this smells pretty bad. How badly must Moochelle have threatened him to convince him to lie to the New York Times about his reasons for leaving? The real question is: what did he overhear about Benghazi when he was delivering watermelon pastries to 0bummer at 3 a.m.?

Which side of moderation do "Space Age Moon Waffles" fall upon?

- Waffle batter
- Caramel squares
- Liquid smoke
- One stick of butter

Lol I see your point, but honestly the laws now actually *promote* butter and cream (and milk and cheese) through government subsidies to producers.

Damn right the White House needs a pastry chef. Probably has its own chapter in Diplomacy 101 textbooks.

When I sell my internet business for a billion dollars, I'm getting a 80 foot sailing yacht and a pastry chef. The rest of my future life will then naturally fall into place.

Moderation being an imaginary country where beer and wine is good for you.

Actually, butter and cream might be good for you. And not in moderation. Our metabolism is confused by having the same foods all year long. So, what if your body never had to worry about how much fat it gets, but the sugars and proteins are sporadic?

Thank you. I was hoping that someone would, within the first ten comments, point out how absolutely full of shiat this article (and the one it's based on at Tucker Carlson's biatch-fit-throwing website) is. The First Lady did not fire the guy--he voluntarily left. And healthy eating had nothing to do with it other than that the pastry chef liked the suggestion of less sugar, less fat, and so forth.

But why let things like pesky facts get in the way of rightwing outrage?

Also note that the article in the New York Times waited until something like the fifteenth paragraph to subtly state that the guy has a husband. In the article in the Daily Caller, it's right there, upfront in the second (third?) paragraph: "openly gay pastry chef." Because screw subtlety. And decorum. And human decency and dignity.

Speaking as a liberal, this sounds a bit disingenuous. You can't constantly rail against income inequality, and then employ a full time pastry chef while food pantries are struggling to keep their shelves stocked. Cater some freaking food in if you have to.

Not as much moderation as is traditionally suggested:  http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/03/17/290846811/dont-fear-the-f a t-experts-question-saturated-fat-guidelines

I'd cut sugar out of your diet before you cut fats out. At least fats have known nutritional benefits.

True. I'm confused why someone thinks they SHOULD be demonized just because too much is bad for you. I can't think of anything where "More is always better" is true.

Jesus...why didn't they just blast subtlety with a double-barreled shotgun (rather than quietly strangling it) by showing the First Lady gorging her fat tookus on fried chicken? I mean, they're already mocking the President's ears for being too big(?) when they're no bigger than average.
