Part of being a military rather than a rabble is that you shoot when you're told to shoot, and die waiting if you have to.  It's the sort of thing commanders insist upon.

I'm stunned everyone's discipline held up this long, honestly.

This is how every competent military in the world works.  You shoot only when you are told.........not when you feel like it.  If that means you end up dead..........well, thats how military life works.  This isn't Florida where you are allowed to shoot someone because of loud music, blackness, etc.

The Ukranian military has kept most/all of their soldiers and sailors unarmed because they don't want to be the ones to start a shooting war.  This was Putin's playbook in Georgia.  He provoked the Georgia army and once they started shooting Russia had a green light to wipe them out.  The Russians have been testing the Ukranians by attacking their ships and whatnot and the Ukranians have shown an amazing amount of restraint.  They might be small force but they are a very competent force.

FTFA:"Making the case that Russia is responding to the will of the Crimean people, Putin argued that it is the U.S. and its Western allies who seek to rule by the will of 'the gun.' His military forces in Crimea, Putin argued, are there only to create 'peaceful conditions' as that region's ethnic-Russian majority exercises its right to self-determination."

Reminds me of the good times when Hitler liberated the German people in Czechoslovakia. It's hard to fight the will of the people.

It's pretty critical that your army does that, otherwise your adversaries will be able to bait your troops into action with feints and false charges

there are other ways to wage war other than the pow pow kind & to be honest, that's a barbaric way of the past.

There would be real repercussions to starting a shooting war with Russia over this. This would not be like the invasion of Iraq where the Iraqi army was divided, immobilized and the either surrendered or was destroyed all in a matter of days.

I'm not worried about Obama starting a war. I'm worried about Obama building up a war-time military. And then the idiots in this country voting in another GOP Big Oil ticket and that administration finding a reason for another 10 year war somewhere.

On the other hand, there would actually be an opposing force with a chain of command capable of ending the war at some point
