The first two words in the headline pretty much covered that.

OK, I'll start using the term "bigot moron" instead of "Southern Baptist" then.

I always liked arguing with pro-lifers on campus for why this particular cell is worthy of rights while all the other cells in your body wasn't. It always lead to some hasty ad-hoc arguments as their prepared ones fell away.

I love how they make all kinds of political statements legal by prefacing them with the opening of a prayer.

"Father God, we pray that you will help us make good decisions.  We pray that you would stay our hand from voting for John Jones, as he is a notorious baby killer and hasn't lived up to Your Holy Word.  We pray that you will help us to see the right way, and lead us to vote for the candidate that follows your precepts, including outlawing abortion, ensuring gun rights and being a member of the Republican Party..."

Not political speech.  It's prayer!

Ad hoc or ad hominem?

Back to TFA: this seems logically consistent with other things they put out.  That is: if you ignore the science behind things, you can describe them any way that suits your needs and can even make you sound smarter to ignorant people.

factoryconnection: Ad hoc or ad hominem?

Ad-hoc. They'd say "fertilization is the point at which it becomes a genetically unique organism." I'd say "so is my cancer cell." They'd say "given the right conditions and nutrients, it'll become a person." I'd say "so would an egg and a sperm pre-fertilization, you just need the 'right conditions' to include finding one another." Or, a personal favorite of mine, "so you mean that when I eat pine nuts instead of planting them it's the same as chopping down forests?"

Each time they'd have to come up with some other reason for why a fertilized egg cell is somehow unique, and eventually they'd run out of canned responses and have to come up with new ones.

The batter becomes cake only after it has been cooked in and oven.  Dough become bread.  If you wouldn't eat it before putting it in the oven, it isn't what it is supposed to be until it is taken out of the oven.

If you don't believe in science, you don't get any input on how science names stuff.

That's just how it goes.

A ha.  I misread "hasty" as "nasty" and thus ad-hoc works perfectly.

I really want to go and paint "Brought to you by Hoover" on the bottom of it.

ok
sure

they may be a little misguided and over-zealous about this....it is certainly clear they aren't using these words as scientists do - so I can give them a little leeway. After all, while I am fighting for female reproductive rights on a legal and scientific basis, they are countering with whatever understanding they have.

we can argue about the Southern Baptist's understanding of fertilization and what makes babby babby but you'd have to agree that they are right about male/female dancing.....it is a sin that leads to really dangerous .....

oh....oh my.....is that Barry White I hear...?  i feel unholy stirrings......

I've been staring at this for like a minute, and not only do I not understand how it is relevant to my comment, but I don't understand its rationality in and of itself.

Cancer terminates itself in your death. Most infectious diseases clear up on their own after spreading to many other hosts. Indebtedness terminates itself through repossession of all your stuff.

Considering the potential results of the foreseeable termination of the condition, yes, there can be many, many, many reasons to terminate a condition that will eventually end before it comes to that end.

God is still the most prolific baby killer to this day if you believe life begins at conception. Today he kills more babies than every abortion doctor in the world combined.

Which, of course, is why the Catholic Church threatened to excommunicate any Irish lawmaker who voted for a law that would allow abortion in cases where a mother's life was in danger.

on the other hand?

if God's angel appeared before some scared pregnant unwed teen and said "be not afraid".....well, no....she might abort anyway - with the double plus goodness of being evaluated for drug abuse...

there should be a bumper sticker: "Which prison is Jesus in now?"

Also, did this yahoo really just say he has more "politically correct" terms for "pre-born human individuals"?
