Did some hacker do this about a week after release?

Yeah, this is just the official release.  I may actually consider buying it now.

impaler: Did some hacker do this about a week after release?

Yes and no. The "hack" was just setting a network freewheel timer to never expire... the problem, however, is that then the neighboring cities never update their resources. So it would work, but after a while, would get very strange. That was what EA was saying when they said it was impossible to enable single player mode "without a significant amount of engineering work" - technically, the hack enabled single player, but it was a broken single player mode.

It'd be like making a single-player WoW client, by running a database locally. It'll work fine... except for the lack of any interaction with anyone else, ability to group, auction house, etc.

2014-03-18 01:02:35 PM
And just to stipulate, I think it was a stupid idea of EA to design SimCity to be a network "social" game, with tiny cities that aren't big enough to have all of the resources you need such that you  have to play with others - or at least, run a dozen tiny cities yourself. But that doesn't mean that they were lying when they said they couldn't flip a switch and make it run properly in single player mode. Instead, they had to rewrite the server code to run client-side.

If they keep working at it, they might come up with something that's almost as good as the original Sim City.  Thank God for supercomputers, huh?

I tried another game on IOS that EA was putting out. Supposedly their remake of an old title to make it look like "clash of clans". The updates kept negating my time and money investment "well, we discovered that people are complaining about this that and somethingorother". Sorry you folks that paid real cash and invested time, nothing is going to be done for you. Fortunatly the app store gave me a full refund of my in game purchases.

Well crap, I built out a cluster just so I'd be able to properly compute the frequency at which the various sims living in my city take bathroom breaks based on meals available that is required to get a real single player experience.  I guess I have no choice but to leave it rendering tentacle porn.

Don't do it. EA will never learn until they feel pain.

My guess is that the new single player mode will require players to place a building, then wait a period of 4, 12, or 24 hours before it is built and available for use.

The lesson EA is most likely to learn:

"Hey, they said they wanted single player offline mode, and when we finally gave it to them, they didn't purchase the game! That must mean they really didn't want it after all- online mode for all from here forth!"

Never mind they took forever to release it and the game had enough other issues to turn off potential buyers, they'll just end up hearing whatever they want to hear.

I'm sure you not buying the game a year after release kills their bottom line.

Let's ignore how many units Titanfall, a mediocre COD clone, sold on release day. Or how many Xboxes it has moved.

It's got a memory leak that occasionally requires reloading the game, and it's no longer being maintained, but it's pretty fun. Worth picking up if you can find it for cheap. I'm hoping someone picks it up to make an open source version, a la OpenTTD, fix the leak, and add modding.

I've heard nothing but complaints how small the maps are.. Can I get a reference please?

Also. Is connecting cities necessary to build a good functioning City? I hated having to be industry in one map, and the actual city in another..

Yeah. They're too small to have garbage collection, fire departments, universities, airports, stadiums, etc. all in one.

Sims have no permanent home. They just end up inhabiting the first empty house they come to on the way home from work.

Likewise, sims have no permanent job. If an uneducated worker reaches the nuclear power plant before the educated worker, guess who's running the reactor today? Joey methhead.

even if they added offline mode, even if they made the cites larger, it would still be an utterly terrible and broken game.

*sigh* Ultimately you're right. And as someone who plays the Simpsons mobile game (where the 'wait 24 hours until a building is built' comes from), it's frightening the numbers of people who put serious amounts of real-world money into it. You can spot the towns that the person paid more than $300 for in-game currency because all the sudden they go from a small town to having every premium character and building unlocked along with every town expansion unlocked too.

Theaetetus: Yeah. They're too small to have garbage collection, fire departments, universities, airports, stadiums, etc. all in one.

That was never the point. They were forcing you to co-op with other people in other towns. One had the universities, one had the tech, and another one produced raw materials. People complaining about map size just completely missed the point. If you could put everything in one town you wouldn't need the region!

That what made the connectivity issues between towns so madding! You'd send a gift over and you'd have it disappear! One town would suddenly decide that they were going to stop sending you power! And that was the town you built the university at in order to have the nuke plant so you could power everything.

And don't get me started about area wide projects!

madding as hell but still a fun game all in all. And damn near all those issues are fixed now.

Yes, that was the point, but it wasn't that people complaining  missedit - rather, no one  wanted it. SimCity was always about building on your own, not building by committee. It's like if someone decided to make a MechWarrior: Voltron game where you need four friends to each control a limb of your mech. Who the hell wants that?

Things change. The point of the game they produced was to be a co-op game. Frankly I hate co-op games because I hate having to relay on someone to keep up with their part of the town. But I was willing to play one game in multiple locations so I am fine with it.

I have a feeling that if they just polished up the last game and sold that people would be bitaching about nothing being new.

2014-03-18 04:15:44 PM
How much different is the game from the Sim City of yore now that I don't have to play with other people? I have a free copy I haven't installed because I had no interest in multiplayer Sim City. Can I still save the game and burn the city to the ground then just start from the save again? Since the maps are so small can you basically just play as all of the regions? Is the game any fun?

It would end up being closer to real life football. And by that I mean drug dealing, shooting, and drunk driving would be incorporated.

Things change, but the demographics didn't. Coming out with a sequel that targets a different market than its predecessor shows a real lack of insight.

I've heard there's a lot of shiny grays mixed in with the drab browns of the maps, and you get some sort of AI bot that hangs around you.  Everyone loves AI bots in multiplayer right?

Probably not everyone, but it seems far more than enough do.

Until a game of a certain type stops making money, it will keep being made.   Kinda like the fact this was the 5th iteration of Sim City, Madden is basically an annual $60 roster update, there's been 9,381 expansions for the Sims, etc etc.

They didn't hide anything. It said right there on the box that you needed an internet connection and they it was co-op. And it was that big of a departure from Sim City 4. 4 had the same thing with interlocking cities!

That part of the game EA is completely blameless for.

Now the bugs that made that system unworkable on 0 day I'll join in the biatching about.

Oh, I'm not saying they hid it or anything. I'm saying it was a stupid idea to make the game this way, and I have no idea why anyone who was a fan of the earlier SimCity games bought it.
