Kinder to each other? Those people aren't even nice to the other members of their church?
Who the hell do they like?

They seem to have disappeared from the news (well, beyond the death bed announcement), so maybe the power shift is a good thing. Also sounds like they silenced that shrieking harpy Shirley.

On Sunday, church spokesman Steve Drain refused to talk about the excommunication of Fred Phelps Sr.
"We don't discuss our internal church dealings with anybody," he said.

Yeah!  Can't you respect the privacy of this poor family during a difficult time?

Hey, just as long as they protest that dead soldier's funeral next weekend. You know, for God.

They aren't so much a church as they are a bunch of lawyers running a litigation scam. When a law firm starts to break up, it can get really, really ugly.

I guess they finally read that part of the bible about women not being allowed to teach and must remain silent.

I wish this was mentioned more often in the breathless coverage of their stupid-assed protests.  "The WBC is the public front of the Phelps Law Firm that specializes in tort law, inciting torts and suing the people they incite.  Their religious message is part of the bait."

I don't know. I've moved to believing they really are that crazy. I think some of the excommunicated would've highlighted that. Instead they just keep saying "Yea, the family is just hateful and evil."

Sure they will sue if something happens, but actual litigation has been so sporadic that there's no way they'd still be open if they were relying entirely on litigation money.

I wonder what would happen if a grieving family member of a soldier took one of them out in a fit of rage, then claimed temporary insanity, then the jury nullified any guilty verdict.

In theory, of course.

All I can say is, any downfall or ruin that comes upod Phelps is nothing more than Karma that is well deserved.
I hope he burns on this planet before he gets the chance to burn in hell.

So, is this an ouster of the head scam artists by a group of faster, more agile scam artists looking for a bigger slice of the litigation pie?

Or is this a purge of the head scam artist heretics by their own carefully-crafted nest of true believers, who are now about to run amok in loud and public fashion?

I bought into the "yeah, they excommunicated him to money in the church for legal reasons" storyline.

Shirley Phelps-Ropers being knocked out as heir apparent shocks me. I really thought of her as the power behing the legal pads and fax machine.

No need to go and picket Fred's funeral. I can watch the implosion from here.

My band is opening for a band called Get Shot in a couple weeks. They run a sleazy amateur porn site getshotgirls.com (OHHH its nsfw) and they recently filmed a porno on that churches front lawn and jerked off on their stairs. The twitter conversation after between them and Shirley Phelps was hilarious
I got a like from them on facebook when I suggested they bukkakie (I don't know if that's spelled right but I aint looking it up here) his head stone.

As in, we'll miss the days when Fred ran the show.

Naw, Ithink the law firm just provides a means to  finance  what they do.  If it were just a religious litigation scam they would be filthy rich.  They're just insanely hate full freaks who happen to be lawers.

Despite the prevailing wisdom, the Phelps family doesn't make much, if anything from litigation. It's an old canard not backed up by reality, which is that civil litigation is expensive and getting actual money out of someone is very hard to do.

They're not making stacks of cash on litigation.

I can't see this little scam running for much longer if Fred is packing his bags for an eternal "reward" and Shirley was told to STFU, who else is there...Fred and Shirley were the faces of that group, without them it's like al Qaeda without Bin Laden or  al Zawahiri.

Came here to say it but not sure how I feel about it.  Phelps getting protested by his own monster turning on him sounds like the most appropriate ending,  On the other hand, it's because he started down the path of trying to be a decent person.  The very, very long path in his case, but still...

Not arguing with you, it's just that I've been on Team Prevailing Wisdom about this crew, so if I'm missing out on some key information please gimme gimme.

So it probably was exactly what I and other said, Fred went to the doctor and was told he only has a short time left, he freaks out about going to hell and tells the rest of his family that maybe they should dial back the evil a little bit, they flip their lid and put him in a home and pump him full of drugs so he can't go public with his change of heart and ruin their street cred.

God help him if he has any significant assets in his name when he dies that aren't otherwise part of the church. That probate battle will be epic, and probably destroy the whole church. Of course, what will probably happen is that they'll just split apart and form separate groups, so instead of just having one group of crazies protesting funerals, you'll have like five.
