You're thinking of Global Thermonuclear War. Or maybe Tic Tac Toe. I'm not sure.

Falken's Maze is pretty good, though. Or just banging Elizabeth Shue.

I also think that they got tired of being involved in people trying to hack the RMAH, people calling up and claiming they were scammed, and other tomfoolery.  If someone did a large scale hack of the Real Money Auction House, blizz could be held liable for any and all damages that incurred, and that can run up in the millions.

On a side note, Diablo 3 was a good game when it launched, had it been called anything BUT diablo 3.  It tried to be a action-MMO instead of an action-RPG, with its mini-raid like boss fights, Inferno mode and build styles.  diablo players want to dive in and wipe out scores of monsters with their buddies, not worry about wiping on the next boss pack.

The latest patch addressed a lot of the launches shortcomings, and hopefully the x=pack next week will improve it even more

I checked the game out again after the recent "loot 2.0" patch and was pleased enough with all the changes that I was sold on the expansion due out next week - it really does feel like a whole new game and, in my opinion, is how D3 should have been from the beginning.  Unfortunately for a lot of dissatisfied people it's understandably way too late to undo the damage, but for me it's enjoyable enough that I expect to get a few months of play out of this revision (which for me is a lot).

I thought it was a ton of fun on the PS3 with couch co-op but it was very consolized. I could see how people would have a problem with it even if there wasn't an auction house. The whole skill tree (or really the lack there of) made it very undiablo-esque.  If my girlfriend wasn't sitting beside me as we got drunk and kicked ass I probably wouldn't have had the desire to beat it on inferno.

I started paying attention to the new changes with this update. Unfortunately, I need to get my video card replaced (2007 called and wanted it back*) and then I will probably play again.

*8800GTS 640, was a decent card but now crashes randomly. I wish the 8800 GTX I was given hadn't died, but then it was only given to me because the original owner thought it might have a problem and replaced it. Lasted for over a year for me.

And now it's officially the console version. At least there you can hack your items to goof around w/ the weirder builds. There are a ton of weird, interesting builds that are impossible b/c you need extremely specific gear that's so RNG dependent. In D2, you'd just go to the bot-shop and get the o-skill dupe runes you needed to make a whirlwind assassin. Now, you're stuck w/ your generic Crit/Crit Damage/Main Stat gear and using the current FotM build (Frozen Orb is back, and as ubiquitous as before) b/c you can't find the super specific gear to change your build. At least this time, there are items that can actually change your build (sort of).

To teach their own.  I thought TL2 was a boat load of fun.

2014-03-18 03:42:25 PM
I tried TL2 a few weeks ago when steam had it free for the weekend, and for me it mainly served to highlight all the things that D3 actually does well.  D3's system of getting new skills or (runes for an existing skills) every level is so much more fun than putting points in the same stuff I've been using for the last few levels.  I only played for a couple of hours, but I didn't find any abilities on my engineer that felt quite as visceral or impactful as what I get in D3.

That said, the auction house was still a huge mistake.  People like to point to real money AH and say Blizzard's greed ruined the game, but even the gold AH was hugely damaging.

2014-03-18 03:42:31 PM
just hit level 60 with my first character (demon hunter) & love that my bow fires off the occasional chicken

sometimes hard to find a group to play (xbox360) but when i do it's great. overall love the game.  not fighting for loot (i.e. whoever has the fastest connection) makes the game infinitely better.  i thought i'd miss the detail and variations of character builds... and i kinda do, but not so much that it ruins the game or anything.

however: the folks with weapons that do MILLIONS in damage... is that just hacker stuff or is that real?

/thought i was badass cause i do 150k

2014-03-18 03:44:29 PM
also: auction house is freaking horrible idea - grind for it or whine for it like everyone else

2014-03-18 03:45:14 PM
I started playing D3 again, just because I already own it. It is kinds fun in a popping bubble-wrap kind of way. Now that the AH is gone, what reason do they have for making the games live on their servers? It was a real wake-up call when I started playing again just to have the servers be down for a big chuck of time and then face unplayable lag. I had blocked out the pain of that BS from playing WoW, but when I am playing a 1-player game it makes me stabby.

2014-03-18 03:47:20 PM
Good riddance to both AH's.  Game also had bad loot.  And it made me feel bad.  But the new patch is awesome, loot and gameplay really improved.  I was a harsh critic of Blizzard, but I'll be pre-ordering the expansion now.  The skills and runes I agree are much better than the Torchlight point system.

Ditto. I felt the same way after I bought Crush the Castle on the recommendation of people who assured me that it was totes superior to Angry Birds.

In the case of Torchlight II, I think that a lot of people have a sense of loyalty to the design group that built it. In both this and the CtC example, I get the sense that people think that those games are more "authentic" than their competitors games and, thus, better.

When someone like you and I, who don't feel that sense of investment in them, try them out, we feel disappointed because they don't live up to the hype. Their purported authenticity doesn't contribute anything towards our perceptions and, so, we find ourselves unimpressed.

One of my toons is running an Enchantress as companion, and she throws a spell that seems to have about a 20% chnace to turn baddies into chickens. They will still take damage when they are chickens, but can't deal any, so it's helpful. Also, sometimes she'll hit a whole mob with it, and I run around like crazy swatting chickens.
I like the new gameplay - they have fixed definitely made it better - although I took their advice, and reset my game to normal, and my toons are WAY too strong right now - but it will balance out it a few levels, it's already started to..
In the meantime it's kind of fun strutting around like King Shiat and killing anything that dares f**k with me.

As opposed to bored games like Diablo?  Its mindless clicking on everything constantly for the entire time.  Other games there's more movement, usage of more then just the mouse buttons and sometimes even some deep layered thought like the total war series, kerbal space program or the sims.  That's right, I think the Sims has more depth then Diablo 3.

hmm - so my 150k is just the "physical" damage & the "+200 arcane damage" is in addition to this and it's not reflected in the stats (in the character screen where it shows Damage) ?

Increased AoE damage is a joke. 20% chance max, 10 yard radius max. Nope. Better off w/ elemental and especially skill boosts. Problem is it's too hard to find exactly the right combo for your build, and some of the elemental switches are insane (like lightning bolts that blow up enemies turn into ice bolts, huh?) You can't pick your geometry and your element type very easily. And barbs have it the worst, b/c their "physical" skills almost all switch out to a different element based on your weapon (this is still bugged and not clear at all anywhere in game). So what this means is that crit chance and crit damage are still your best bet, b/c it is so flexible and can work for any build (except Hyrda/Sentry, which need to be fixed). Attack speed is now one of your healing stats, b/c they killed off percent life steal.

Diablo 2 could and should have been played by robots; it really was two clicks ad infinum for 99.9% of the builds. D3 actually requires multiple buttons most of the time. Sure, there are some dumb skills (like Wizard armor and Barb shouts), but it's already way more advanced tactically than D2 ever was. It could be better (it should be better), but there's only so many layers you could add before it feels too much like WoW, where you have to juggle 12 buttons at all times just to squeeze an extra 3% during a 12 second window.

At least this time, there are items that can actually change your build (sort of).

BumpInTheNight: degenerate-afro: Wait, isn't that all video games? Maybe you should take up board games as a hobby.

So you prefer Sim and Strategy games to Action games?  That's fine, but it's still just a bunch of clicking.  Which was my point.

Games that aren't a bunch of clicking are board games (Risk, Cataan, etc), card games (Solitaire, Black Jack, Poker, etc), sports (football, bowling, hockey), or sit down and let other things do the work (NASCAR, Horse Racing, PBR, etc)

Outside of there are games that are more about moving a stick left and right (flight sims, racing games) or moving a stick left and right while clicking (Street Fighter, King of Fighters, BlazBlue).  Every once in a while you'll do a game that's clicking with a different part of your body (Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution, Track and Field).

They really do need to bring back the "point at stuff and click" games (House of the Dead, Silent Scope, Duck Hunt, Time Crisis) at some point.  All of this new motion capture with Kinect and PS Move and they haven't been able to make a decent NEW shooter in a while.

chozo13: Wow, what in depth and well written article.

I'm guessing that for the typical gamer that felt like slogging through a novel.

Dazrin: Cytokine Storm: I checked the game out again after the recent "loot 2.0" patch and was pleased enough with all the changes that I was sold on the expansion due out next week - it really does feel like a whole new game and, in my opinion, is how D3 should have been from the beginning.  Unfortunately for a lot of dissatisfied people it's understandably way too late to undo the damage, but for me it's enjoyable enough that I expect to get a few months of play out of this revision (which for me is a lot).

Go into Windows Power Settings, and set PCI-E power management to full power.  There might also be a similar setting in the Nvidia control panel as well.

Paper DPS is irrelevant. If you have elemental damage buffs and increased area of effect damage, those don't show up.
.

Actually, Area damage has been proven to be very useful.
