Two thoughts:

1) I think it's interesting that it's the Chinese who decided to pass this information to us with regards to Putin's attempt at meddling in our economic recession.

2) Looks the Bush Administration decided not to do anything about this information.

China is that country that grew up, got smart, and started doing business with the guy they hated in HS. Russia is China's friend who still lives in a basement apartment, still parties every night, and tries to get China to join him like old times.

I think China realizes that in dragging us down they would go down too.  It may not be the case forever, but it is true now.

China's gotten very good at playing both sides against the middle.  I know the Russians are desperate for allies, but the Chinese are never going to ascent to being the junior partner.

China is holding about a trillion dollars worth of US debt.  Just a 1% loss on that investment comes to $10,000,000,000.00.

That's a lot of chopsticks.

Number 2 is impossible, as I have heard from Fark that Putin is only doing these things because Obama has shiatty taste in jeans and such.

For me this is pretty jaw-dropping stuff - the Chinese told Hank Paulson that the Russians were suggesting a joint pact with China to drive down the price of the debt of Fannie and Freddie, and maximize the turmoil on Wall Street - presumably with a view to maximizing the cost of the rescue for Washington and further damaging its financial health.

The funny thing is if they had actually done that it would have probably galvanized the American people into doing the best thing for the economy and really work to make it better instead of all the fighting and partisanship.

There's so many of us,
So many of us,
So many, there's so many, there's so many

Let's have a war,
So you can go and die,
Let's have a war,
We could all use the money,
Let's have a war,
We need the space,
Let's have a war,
Clean out this place

It already started in the city,
Suburbia will be just as easy

Let's have a war,
Jack up the Dow Jones,
Let's have a war,
It can start in New Jersey,
Let's have a war,
Blame it on the middle-class,
Let's have a war,
We're like rats in a cage

It already started in the city,
Suburbia will be just as easy

Let's have a war,
Sell the rights to the networks,
Let's have a war,
Let our wallets get fat like last time,
Let's have a war,
Give guns to the queers,
Let's have a war,
The enemy's within

It already started in the city,
Suburbia will be just as easy

Well, they were on their way out by that point anyway, and they had bigger problems to worry about at the time.  Telling everybody that "THERE'S AN INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY AGAINST US" at that time would just have added fuel to the fire, not to mention it would have made them look really stupid stupider than they already were.

Like the American Shopping Mall regime gives a shiat about any of this, so long as outlets are still open and can continue to buy cheap Chinese plastic junk and the latest cell phone, watch the NFL and follow the KarTrashians.

What? Someone had to say it.

I gotta be a little skeptical about the story though, because I'm not sure how this "conspiracy" would have actually mattered.  If they dumped Fannie / Freddie stock, it would have been cheaper for the US government to take over the entity.  If they were dumping Fannie / Freddie bonds, that would theoretically raise their future borrowing costs, but once they get taken into conservatorship it would be the federal government borrowing on their behalf, so the financial condition of Fannie and Freddie wouldn't impact that directly (would it? I might be misunderstanding the nature of the post-takeover relationship between the government and Fannie and Freddie).

Nothing like gratitude.

If I'm correct, when the Soviet Union collapsed years ago, the US chose not to take advantage of the resulting confusion and financial mess Russia had gotten itself into. Instead, the US stepped up with loans and assistance to help their former enemies recover.

Once ex-KGB agent Putin got into power, he waited until the US staggered economically and started causing trouble.

I'm reminded of the Indian's story in natural born killers:

A brave walking in snow finds a rattlesnake freezing to death. Feeling sorry for the creature, he takes it to his teepee, warms it by the fire and nurses it back to health.

The snake then bites him.

As he lay dying, he asks the snake, after all the kindness I showed you, why did you bite me?

The snake replies; you knew what I was when you picked me up.

FTA I was getting the living daylights beaten out of me by our Congress publicly, I needed to call the Chinese regularly to explain to the Central Bank, 'listen this is our political system, this is political theatre, we will get this done'.

I would have described it as a circus.

And we haven't learned a thing.  I bought a house a couple of years ago and had to jump through major hurdles and tap dance to their tune to get a loan that was about equal to my yearly salary.  I got a letter (for the third time) that informed me that I am now qualified for a loan that is more than 5 x  my base salary.  In fact, my takehome has gone down because I have lost about 25% of my working hours in the last year.  Who would do this kind of thing?  I'm afraid we are headed the same direction again.

I hope I am wrong.

I guess Obama was too busy in the Fall of 2008, campaigning to become President, to hop in the Lincoln time machine and be the cause of this global world-changer, but what the Hell:  always blame Obama! He's been plotting to destroy America since August 4, 1961, maybe earlier. He's the café-au-lait Stewie Griffin. PURE EVIL.

No, no, but you're close. See, the reason Putin did this in 2008 was that Obama was gaining popularity. Putin knew that an economic collapse in America would cause the public to vote against the party in power, much like Roosevelt beating Hoover. Thus, not only would the ex-KGB agent acheive his personal goal of watching the US struggle, but perhapsmore importantly to him would be guaranteeing Obama's election.

This would not only serve to provide Putin with an adversary that he found easily manipulatable, it would also allow him to stop the one thing he truly feared- the single thing that could stop his attempt to grasp unprecedented executive power in Russia. It would allow him to prevent the election of Sarah Palin to the Vice-Presidency.

Study it out.

HBO did one of there awesome movies that noone watches called 'Too Big to fail' which chronicles Henry Paulson and his staff's We-Have-No-Idea-What-We-Are-Doing handling of the brink.   It actually has a scene where Paulson is told about the Russian's plan.

I doubt this is actually the case.  This happened in 2008 when Bush was President.  President Bush looked into Putin's eyes and got a sense of his soul.  He wouldn't have done this to his pal.

Ahem, I have reason to know, that that movie is extremely accurate, and that most of the dialogue therein was taken directly from e-mails sent by most of the people portrayed in the movie at the time of the crisis that were later released in response to a FOIA request.

Hank Paulson: So, after I totally screwed up as Treasury Secretary. After I let Wall Street run the country and the world into the biggest recession in 65 years! After 8 years of ignorant fiscal leadership. I heard that the Russians wanted to take advantage of my gross incompetence and hurt the economy even further. That's not fair!
