If all of the members of your church are getting church logo tattoos, you might want to consider whether you've created a cult.

budrojr: Here is an atheist who actually understands more about Christianity than most Christians, and isn't misinterpreting things, taking things out of context, or just believes patently false information.

This is far more common than you think.

We must also obey Commandments 11 through 15. Whatever they were.

11. Be excellent to each other.

I am an atheist, but I like to point out to christians when they start talking about sin and the bible and what their god commands.

According to the new testament, when the pharisees attempted to entrap Jesus, they asked him which commandment was the most important, knowing that if he were to name any single commandment, they could rightly brand him a heretic.   Jesus answered that all of the commandments come down to first loving god with all of your heart and second loving your brother as you love yourself.

Nothing about the ghey, or witchery, or fornicating, or alcohol.

Just loving.

/(Again, atheist.  But loving my brothers as best I can.)

allylloyd: Farce-Side: Number40: So, what you're saying...is Catholics are the only Christians to celebrate mass?

You should stop now.  You're embarrassing yourself.   Your self awareness is inversely proportional to your weight and stupidity.

I don't think any Catholics celebrate mass...I think most of them attend begrudgingly.

Methodists don't have mass, Baptists don't have mass.  I don't know about all those other Protestants.

Believe it or not, all Churches are celebrating Mass. How? Why? Because, Mass means the Holy Eucharist (which means Great Thanksgiving). The purpose of any and all Church services is to give thanks to God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Communion, however, is something else.  The Holy Communion is a sacrament to celebrate the Last Supper. The Roman Catholic, Episcopalian/Anglican and Orthodox churches all celebrate Holy Communion. It's a standard. Some Protestant Churches: Lutheran, Methodists also celebrate it.
The reason why some Protestants don't celebrate the Holy Communion is because it's considered a "Catholic" thing to do and once upon a time, you had to be baptized into the Catholic Church in order to receive it. (Receive it means getting the bread/wine.) Things have changed. If you are baptized Christian, you can receive Holy Communion. If you aren't a baptized Christian, you can still receive Holy Communion. And if you don't want to receive it, you can ask for a Blessing instead.

//A member of my church is Jewish. She receives Holy Communion because she's moved by its message.

Religiously, she is apostate. She is not counted as a Jew for any religious observance.

Why do I get the feeling that some of you are

1) Angry Atheists
2) Angry Christians
3) just plain Angry?

Is anyone forcing you to get a tattoo? NO! So don't worry about this. There is a Lutheran Minister who has tattoos: Nadia Bolz-Weber. Great speaker, you can google her name.

How is it that the person (joeshill) who understands a simple message the best (Love God before all others and love your neighbors as yourself) said he's an atheist?

//By the way, after Jesus told them about those two things, he turned around to his apostles and whispered "There's a third Commandment--LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!"

There is a difference between acceptance and enabling. I suspect this pastor has lost sight of that difference.

Fu Manchu: I'm pretty sure when he talks about the mark of the beast on either right hand or forehead, it means taking the "mark" through your actions or your thoughts.

So yeah... symbolic.

I have no idea what he was trying to say. He was having "visions." Maybe self induced trance states or plant induced hallucinations. Then he tried to pass that along in code to his confederates. I don't think anyone in today can say with any assurance what he meant beyond very general terms.

Jim_Callahan: SquiggsIN: Yet, so many of the people who want to cherry pick old testament verses to justify discrimination continually ignore the parts surrounding said verses.  I wouldn't make the assumption that the pastor is gay-friendly.  Plenty of people cite lev18:22 while ignoring almost everything else in the book without seeing the hypocrisy in doing so.

Eh, stupid individual people do that.

The institutions base hating on gay people mostly on the Pauline epistles, plus a few other comments here and there in the NT.

The only old testament rules that churches actually treat as rules are the first three or four of the ten commandments, ish.  No stealin', no murderin', no idolatry, no covetin'.  Everything else isn't really binding, it's the origin story that doesn't really matter... basically the Christian Silmarillion, some interesting imagery and language here and there but no actual moral lessons.

Rofl...explain how mult-ton stone monuments of the Ten Commandments AREN'T idolatry.

demaL-demaL-yeH: untaken_name: Eh, Christians only pretend to believe in the bible. Look at how many Christian churches serve ham on a regular basis. Look at how many churches perform interracial marriages, etc. They just want the moral authority that traditionally came from the bible without the inconvenience of following its rules.

0/10 Too obvious.

I don't think that was a troll, I think it was a zing against the hypocrisy of modern churches.

No one pays attention to Leviticus or at least they cherry pick what they want to follow. As for the Ten Commandments in court houses, there are no laws even based on the Ten Commandments. Stealing and murder, that's it and even those are highly negotiable.

Is it just me, or was Paul sort of douchy in general? Not just the gay stuff, but I always get the impression that he was just a little more self righteous than necessary. Especially compared to the rest of them. I don't know.

Uh, it's not MY book. If you want to pretend that interracial marriage isn't prohibited in the Christian's source of doctrine, that's your problem. I didn't write the thing, and I am not responsible for its contents.

robohobo: I find the whole idea of the Mark of the Beast terribly interesting.

It's not as interesting as you think: it's just code for knowing Latin. See, the Beast was Emperor Nero, and and if you didn't have the Mark on your hand (the ability to write in Latin) or on your head (the ability to speak Latin), you wouldn't be able to "buy or sell" in the Roman Empire. Simple as that, really.

Tattoos are an eyesore just like graffiti.

But hey, I guess if you are such a complete loser that you have no power at all, then graffiti is the only way you can make any impact at all on the world during your puny, pathetic existence.

But if you are stupid too, then please, by all means, pollute your skin with some stupid, ugly, skin-stain.

propasaurus: Leviticus 18:22 still counts, though.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if the pastor is chill enough that he'll actually back up an offhand joke about covering people's ink if they want to get the church logo tattooed on 'em, he prooooobably doesn't particularly care if you're gay either.

// The serious answer is that theologically the old testament rules are considered either fulfilled by Christ's coming and no longer binding (there's an explicit passage where ghost-Jesus shows up and basically calls Paul a douche for not eating ham at one point), or considered part of god's contract with the chosen tribe specifically, meaning they only bind you if you're Jewish by blood and affiliation in addition to Christian by faith.  There aren't really any sects that hold the old testament laws binding to most members, honestly Christianity in general didn't even bother to copy 'em over to their version half the time.

Some of them seem to obsess about the whole Ten Commandments thing - the Roy Moore thing from a few years back, or the monuments that are popping up like boners at a viagra factory.

My eyes aren't the best, but if I squint a little I might be able to read it... "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; "

Oh. Well, it's possible they all just lost a contact lens somewhere.
