Good. I like the show. Season 2 was sort of all over the place with demon possession, zombies, Nazi scientists and UFOs but season 3 was good except no one would farking stay dead until the very end. Jessica Lang is great in all of them though.

Agreed.  Sadly, though, Jessica Lang isn't doing it anymore.  I believe I read in an interview that season 3 was her last.

Jessica Lang carries that show in every season. If she's actually not going to be in it as people mentioned upthread, they're going to have to find one hell of a replacement to take her place. I thought Kathy Bates was going to be more of a force in season 3... and maybe she will be, I'm only about half way through, but so far she's not as badass as her initial scenes made her out to be.

GIven the critical acclaim and the acting calibre already on the cast - and the possibility of guaranteed award nomination -, there are a number of top tiers I could imagine them hooking for a season (Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, etc).

I don't think anyone ever claimed that the basis of AHS, in any season, is drastically new and original. The first season is a haunted house, the 2nd an asylum, 3rd a witches coven. Carnival wasn't exactly the first take on a traveling circus. The details and how the story is told are what make the show.

I was a little bored with season 3...but I am optimistic season 3 carny setting could be nice and creepy.

Also agree with the "Carnivale" fans. Was a very good short lived series.

My only real hope is that this next season is a bit more focused. As nice as it was to see Lange, Bassett, Bates, and to a lesser extent, Rabe chew scenery, it seemed to come at the expense of, you know, plot. Season 3 started out strong, but it was clear midway through the season that no overarching plot was written. Season 2 wasn't quite as bad on that front, but it seems like they went the opposite direction and overloaded the plot with subplots.

Yeah, 3 was more coherent than 2. 3 was just witches vs voodoo vs hunters. Relatively simple. 2 was all the stuff I mentioned upthread and a lot of other crap thrown in, kind of a mess but entertaining nonetheless. Although in 3, people kept dying but you didn't care because they'd just come back somehow. Sort of deflated some of the tension. Despite all that it's a pretty damn fine show. This'll be the first season I watch one episode at a time and not all at once on DVR or Netflix and it sucks watching a show like this that way but what can you do.

And yes, Jessica Lang is great and she did say that she's going to be in season 4.

You nailed it. Lange, Bassett, and Bates were really the only redeeming features of that season. The younger girls were a bore, and the plot was a hot mess. It was witches and voodoo in New Orleans, ffs! How do you mess that up?

Here's hoping they spend some more time hashing out the plot of this one before they start.

/they won't

to be a bit fair, I don't think they gave the younger cast members much to work with. All the older characters were much more interesting not just because they were better actors, but it seems like the writers gave them much more material to work with. Taissa started out as basically the main character of the season, but that was dropped by the second episode; to say nothing of her killer vagina thing...

Mugato: FeedTheCollapse: My only real hope is that this next season is a bit more focused

I don't know, where Season 2 had a lot of stuff initially all thrown in at once, they did seem to have the good sense to slowly shed off those subplots as it went along. Not a bad idea, but it sort of felt like a lot of pointless filler (and ending the 2 best subplots involving Rabe and Cromwell in the same episode really killed the rest of the season). But season 2 at least had a fairly obvious season-long storyarch; season 3 seemed to keep shifting the focus as it went along only to kind of come back in an anticlimactic way at the very end. Those vampire hunters barely factored into the show.

I could never tell them apart. They were hot, that's one thing the show is consistently good at but they looked too much alike. I couldn't tell sometimes who was the shy catty girl and who was the super biatchy catty girl. Oh and the Stevie Nicks thing was just awkward.

The voodoo demon/devil dude was scary as fark though. They deserved a makeup design award for him

I hope they bring back Ian McShane...
He was great as the murderous Santa in Asylum...
And frickin amazing as Al Swearengen in Deadwood.
He'd be a great long-term, veteran addition to help curb the hurt of losing Jessica Lange after season 4.
AND BRING BACK LILY RABE!!!
In whatever role you want her in!

imagine if Tim Olyphant had passed on playing Raylan Givens because he had already done "Deadwood." Concepts can be redone, give it a chance.

I'm sure Tim Burton will be watching every episode screaming "THAT WAS MY IDEA!"

I have enjoyed AHS and look forward to next season. I would rather watch a bad season of AHS than a good season of the Kardashians. Season 2 did have a few too many subplots, but still had fun watching it.

2014-03-18 10:48:16 AM
I thought season 1 and 2 were all over the place and never finished watching either for different reasons. Season 3 picked a concept and for the most part stuck with it which i liked a lot better.
It's true no one stayed dead much but it didn't bother me nearly as much as season 2 having every horror movie trope at the same time and trying to make it coherent.

They definitely need to get Danny Elfman to do the score. His monotonous circus music would be perfect. Or easier yet, just buy the rights to any of his scores that isn't Batman, doesn't matter which, it's all good.

Twist-42: it didn't bother me nearly as much as season 2 having every horror movie trope at the same time and trying to make it coherent.

It only fell apart for me when the aliens showed up. It's like the problem a lot of people had with with the last Indiana Jones movie (I didn't have this problem but that's a different conversation), aliens and the supernatural don't mix well together, unless they're in separate episodes of The X-Files.

2014-03-18 11:13:08 AM
Well we have 2 good seasons (1&2) and one pretty mediocre season (3) so far. So I remain cautiously optimistic for the next season.

If this one is as dull as season 3, that's probably it for me with this show.

/although this season did have the classic "that magic box tells lies!" line and all that delightful down home racism
//other than Bates though this season was a bore

The total mishmash made perfect sense if you approach it from the perspective that every single "wacky" thing was a classic psychosis of the mentally ill.

Also, the aliens were there as a mystic "other", given God and the Devil were very much tangible things in the series.
